I open the application from steam and the launcher appears. When I click Play, it throws an error "The game appears to have crashed or terminated unexpectedly(exit code null). ...

I went into the launcher and exported the launcher logs.
There are a number of errors in the log file (launcher-2021-01-09), such as:

That's odd, because when I run this game from Steam it does not run or use our launcher at all! It runs the game directly.

I'm on MacOS 13.1 , although that should make no difference to this.

You're not running it from a desktop shortcut or anything, but directly from PLAY in your Steam Library?

Replying this to say I am experiencing the same issue. Works fine on my windows machine but the mac fails to launch. I'm hitting the play button in Steam, which launches the Paradox Launcher. Clicking play in the paradox launcher gets me the same "exit code null" error message. It also wiped out my empire mode save apparently, as my windows machine can no longer access it. Not a huge deal for me as I had been thinking about rerolling and starting fresh, but I can imagine that might be disastrous for other players.

EDIT: I'm on an M1 Macbook, which might explain why Abarthol and I are getting the issue and AndrewT isn't.

Having the same problem. On a M1 MacBook Pro, updated to iOS 13.1, still not working.

Was playing, then there was the Paradox launcher update I believe, or maybe steam, and then came this problem.

By right clicking on Steam file going to browse local files, I can start the game.

I don't understand why the launcher is involved, whether on Intel or M1 Macs.

All affected users here appear to be on Apple Silicon Macs, is that right?

I'll escalate this to Paradox tonight.

Meantime you should be able to run the game from its .app file directly in Finder.

Because Planetfall comes with and runs the Paradox Launcher before the game, same as it does on Steam PC. The weird thing is that it doesn't for you.

im having the exact same issue on mac and if i start it using the .exe i cant have the steam overlay i which i quite like, im not sure if the game will properly cloud save either if not launched through steam

Same for me on an Intel Mac after I updated the launcher. Newest beta also doesn't solve the issue.

Confirming workaround to launch /Users/{me}/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Age of Wonders Planetfall/Age of Wonders - Planetfall.app directly is working.

We released an update an hour or so ago and if you start the game the launcher should tell you there's an update and to restart. Please do so and see if this fixes it (version should be 2023.1.2).
