but ideally sharing a node should be an advantage, that was the original plan as to why Portugal and Spain shared a node. But as of now it's more of an hindrance.

Hm, so many of them.. especially in the Americas, like what's even the point of having Ohio or Panama. Cuiabá should be renamed Upper Peru by the looks of it, and why Zanzibar is still Zanzibar and not Swahili Coast. Ivory Coast - West African Coast. Ivory Coast wasnt an important centre of trade, the Gold Coast was where everyone and their dogs had a trade post...

Hopefully the new Saxony node will prevent all those HRE minor sucking trade all the way from Kiev and Ragusa with their propagating inland bonuses.

I'm not sure about the English Channel. I feel the geographical greater low countries, ie from Picardy to Trier to Cologne to Frisia should be one trade node. Lubeck, Leipsia and Frankfurt should cover the rest of the HRE. It is an immense buff to England as they can cut off all of northern Europe like that. I guess the devs thought an extra link for a London node from Ivory West African Coast and the caribbean was too much. Dunno, I always had one in my personal mod. I hate sharing my home node with anyone and frankly I miss the crazy ass chaining all the way from Asia. Nowadays its all about rushing the Caribbean and Cape and collecting there..

So is the balance on the trade nodes then a more balanced chance to compete for the trade with more potential routes for it to travel?

Perhaps, in the case from the stream then, the Iberians just won this round?

that's why I liked that Sevilla would flow to Bordeaux and London, it gave late colonizers a chance to steal trade and sort of modelled the decline of Spain and Portugal

Actualy since the naval ai code will be more functional than before any statement about England in 1.8 may be incorrect.

Yes, but that doesn't mean the discrepancy in the screenshot is a good representation of how it turns out normally. This was started as a late start date and they were using cheat commands on several different countries. Trying to interpret based on the numbers we saw might be misleading. Getting rid of WETN though makes me think that perhaps they're working to create more competition in North America and Africa, and that got me curious as to how the balance mentioned fits in. I could be misunderstanding what they were referring to entirely though.

Unless there is some sort of large change to trade, seems like a buff to France and a nerf to the Netherlands and Morocco. Not the direction I would have gone with it.

The Western European Trade node didn't nerf the Netherlands, they could steal Britain or France's trade. The English Channel Trade node just cripples them in comparison.

edit: Oh and Italy's trade situation still sucks.

Why did you guys have so much beef with the WETN? Personally, I had no problem, but I'd like your guys' opinion.

My own take: in a no-WETN situation, there are many possible points of competition, and you can attempt to focus on one or many of those points with ships, province capture and buildings. With WETN, all ships get piled into one node regardless of geography. (And/or people end up collecting without ever steering to Europe at all.) Furthermore, that one node can't even have provinces or trade buildings. It's a far less interesting implementation.

Wow, Paradox removed the WETN! Looks like they finally realised how superior the trade node networks of the two big total conversion mods is.
The WETN was just simply bad design, not to mention that it was completely unhistorical and unrealistic. Not sure how it even made it into the game.

On another note, why is Seville an end node? One of the most important structural weaknesses of the Spanish Empire was that by the late 17th century, 60% of Spain's income that arrived from the Americas into Cadiz would quickly leave Spain to other parts of Europe. How can this be represented if Seville is an end node? Of course, I'm not arguing that this should be set in stone to happen, but given that this is what historically happened it should at least be possible.
