The last posting on a US/American thread having been made over 30 days ago, I'll start a new one for suggestions regarding the recently-released beta version of AoN.

One significant omission in the early 19th century is the Monroe Doctrine. The first two events that follow seek to remedy that omission, first with an event that improves relations with the nascent Latin American nations, then with an event modeling the Doctrine itself (and reflecting the improved relations between Britain and the US as a result).

The third event is one dealing with the liberation of Liberia, which begins as a colony of the US. No such event appears to have been scripted, though an event history text may be found in the configuration file. (NOTE: the id number for this text, 19094, is duplicated by a wholly different text for the annexation of the Oregon country. I have simply deleted the Liberia text from the configuration file, and with a little editing have placed it into the new event's description line.)

The fourth event will (I hope) lead to the eventual creation of the Mormon civilization of Deseret as a revolter/vassal. It represents the establishment of the Mormons in Utah. I also hope that we can get another designation for Mormonism than protestantism, Mormonism being a sufficiently different religion from traditional Christianity as to not be Catholic, Protestant, or Reformed (see the discussion on the "Religions" thread).

But in 1821 Congress appropriated funds to defray the expenses of several diplomatic missions to the newly independent states, and preparations were made to open diplomatic relations with at least five of them: Peru, Gran Colombia, Mexico, Chile, and La Plata (Argentina)."

The United States viewed these probabilities with alarm. After according recognition to the new countries, the United States began to formulate a policy aimed at discouraging Europeans from making any attempt to reconquer any land or to establish any more colonies in the New World. An offer from British prime minister Canning to associate Britain with such policy was courteously rejected in favor of independent action based on policies worked out by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams and President Monroe. The policy, known as "the Monroe Doctrine", was summarized and publicized in the President's annual address to Congress in December."

Texas Presidents

Envisioning this thread as pertaining not only to the USA, but to Texas, California, and the CSA (at least) as well....

The current U02 (Texas) monarch file includes only the bland, "Texan Republic". To add some variety, at least in the early years, I've added the historic presidents of the Texas Republic. I suppose these could be scripted into events as well, reflecting the elections (for example, Sam Houston and Stephen Austin in the 1836 election), though in the case of Lamar, he would be nearly unanimously elected since both candidates running against him committed suicide shortly before the election! (Sounds suspicious to me- reminiscent of that Black Adder, "accidently brutally stabbed himself in the stomach and cut off his head while shaving" kind of suicide. But far be it from me to cast aspersions on a President of the great republic of Texas!)

At any rate, here they are:

historicalmonarch = {
id = { type = 6 id = 22023 }
startdate = { year = 1836 }
deathdate = {
day = 10
month = december
year = 1838
}
name = "Samuel Houston"
DIP = 7
ADM = 5
MIL = 6
dormant = no
}
historicalmonarch = {
id = { type = 6 id = 22024 }
startdate = {
day = 10
month = december
year = 1838
}
deathdate = {
day = 10
month = december
year = 1841
}
name = "Mirabeau B. Lamar"
DIP = 6
ADM = 8
MIL = 5
dormant = no
remark = "Concerned with development of the infrastructure of the republic from his inauguration. Had the capital moved to Austin."
}
historicalmonarch = {
id = { type = 6 id = 22025 }
startdate = {
day = 10
month = december
year = 1841
}
deathdate = {
day = 9
month = december
year = 1844
}
name = "Samuel Houston"
DIP = 7
ADM = 5
MIL = 4 #Furloughed most of the army and tried to sell the navy in his second term
dormant = no
}
historicalmonarch = {
id = { type = 6 id = 22026 }
startdate = {
day = 9
month = december
year = 1844
}
deathdate = {
day = 10
month = december
year = 1847
}
name = "Anson Jones"
DIP = 4
ADM = 4
MIL = 4
dormant = no
}

I suppose if wewant to be able to play Texas as an independent republic through the end of the scenario (Mirabeau Lamar envisioned a Texas that stretched to the Pacific!), we could add monarchs based on the governors of the state of Texas (and events for their elections?).

Excellent suggestions.

First off, the omission of the Monroe Doctrine is due to very strong (big understatement :D) design philosophical differences between the original participants in the NA thread (a few people wanted to make the US uber-powerful after the Monroe Doctrine, with CB's on all European invaders, etc.). I have to say that I totally agree with what you've written on it.

I agree that we need Texas governers to extend their monarch file after and before (we could use Mose and then Stephen Austin as its President). The same applies to California, and the CSA, before its historical independence (I suggest using South Carolina governers).

As for election events, I would say that's overkill. But I certainly wouldn't mind if someone (i.e. not myself :p) scripted them.

I agree about Texas election events, Ramos. It would be enough work to look up all the governers through 1914 and find enough information about their administrations to assign diplomatic, administrative, and military abilities (the first and last will be especially difficult to figure out for governors of states).

Given what you've said about Mormon population in the Southwest, should the Mormon/Utah event include other provinces (like Salton, Canyon, Pinalero).

Some amendments to USA presidential elections if the CSA still exists will follow.

Good suggestions :)

The Liberian event exists already though, I don't really know why it isn't there in the public version. Anyway, I'll have some spare time next week so I can make a real overhaul (I think that's the English word :)) about the events and ID's.

btg, the problem is that non-Mormons rapidly became the majority in these provinces, particularly following the Gold Rush. I think we need a coherent policy on the religion/culture of the SW, since I've abstracted the situation (partially to encourage American conquest) to everyone simply become Protestant Americans in 1849.

Wasn't someone working on cleaning up the events dealing with west of Texas (Oregon Country, California and the Arizona/New Mexico area)?

Oh, right, you made it sound like they were going to be disregarded so I shelved them. Well... if you're willing to use them, I think I've still got them...

I never said I wasn't going to use your events. I was merely pointing out that accurate events might be impractical from a game-balance standpoint by crippling the US too much. After all the changes to the US since then, I'd think that's unlikely.

Hrmmm.

My Americans in between California and Texas are always catholic US americans.

The conversion and culture changing commands work differently. Conversions only work when the US owns the area, and culture changing commands work all the time. We could have a Mexican event to convert the provinces, but I don't think that's the proper way to go anymore.

Sheridan, I'd like to add that my opinion isn't the final word on any issue. What I script (or add), on contraversial issues, is usually based on a consensus/compromise between the people who are involved in the issue (and time constraints).

I simple question: how come the US gains 12 manufactories when the ACW breaks out?

The ACW happening implies that the US must be very protectionist. Because the domestic industry was subsidized and protected from foreign competition through tariffs, it explodes. Partially, it's intended to encourage the US player to trigger the ACW.

Is there an event for the Missouri Compromise?

Nope. No one has gotten around to making one...

Good enough.

BTW, I'm quite sure I saw a Mississippi compromise event. I'll take a look.

To my knowledge, there was never a Mississippi Compromise (at least there was never one that was important enough to be mentioned in any US history book).

And I'm fairly sure that there's no Missouri Compromise event; you might be thinking of the Compromise of 1850.

You are correct. You have too many compromises in your history :)

Yeah... the Missouri Compromise was in 1820. It's almost easier to just wrap it in with the start-game setup, I think.

*Maybe* I'll dredge up those American West things I was working on (a complete set for an independent California, plus a few things for USA and Mexico and I think there was a British and a couple Chinese events planned) and see what I can do with 'em.

A weird thing happened to the eastern US in 1869, after the Reconstruction event came up and they Destroyed Slavery almost all of the provinces east of PTI revolted! The CSA came back with a vengeance in 1870 with over half of the American provinces including DC. Canada and the UK got most of the other provinces through defection. So the US has about four provinces in the eastern half of the continent with their capital in New York. In the west everything has been hunkey dory and they even took in a few defections from British Canada.

I was wondering if anybody else has seen this. It is quite disturbing to see such a large nation dissolve.
