I have a AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.80GHz - and I see cities slow down from about 20k. they really start to slow down at 30k - and then just gets slower from there.

just wondering what kind of improvement I would get if I upgraded to an i7-4770k machine.

I currently have 8GB ram - if I was to upgrade I would probably go for 32GB - Im also wondering what impact this would have on performance.

thanks !

** graphics card is NVIDIA GT 440

I have an I7-4770K, Nvidia Geforce 770 , 16gb ram and performance is a breeze. However loading times are slow but is due to all the extra assets and mods, but game wise no slowdowns in game so far.
If you are getting 32GB make sure your operating system can support it. I have windows 7 home premium and it only supports 16MB. If I wanted to have more RAM I will need to upgrade the operating system to the next level which would be Windows 7 profecional

Thanks, Baltizar. No slowdowns ... on what size population cities ? 50k ? 100k ? more ?

I have reached up to 126k in one of my cities....but unfortunately road planning isn't my forte and they get killed with traffic...I'm hoping to learn from my mistakes/errors and predesign road routes before I build anything...reading up on tips from other players for advice...so tonight after work i'll be starting all over again for the 5th time ...but still enjoying the game.

I'm running an i7-4790k @ 4.0 GHz with a Geforce GTX 780 and 8 GB RAM and C:S is running just fine. Without any of the graphic mods I get easy 60fps in a 150k resident city. With Ambient Occlusion, Better SMAA on max settings and Dynamic Resolution on 175% it went down to 25ish fps when zoomed out, but is still fairly good playable and looks great.
Before I had an Core2Quad at just 2.8 GHz and with minimum graphic details and 720p resolution I was lucky to have more than 20fps in a 50k town. So yeah, that was definitely a huge improvement :) Had the Geforce already in there, so I assume it's safe to say that C:S is mostly improving on CPU power, not graphics.

My pc is running with i5-2500k (OC 4.4Ghz) , 8 gb ram 1600Mhz and a GTX 780.
My city has 150k pop and has been lagging quite a lot.
So can I expect a large improvement of performance if I only upgrade the CPU to i7-6700k later?

Had a 4770K before and now a 4790K - both run the game great (i can swap even in minor steps as i run a PC shop ) - nothing lagging, even with a not so great (but 100% silent) 750Ti Vidcard. The CPU you want to use is sure one of the best for this game, dont have any worries.

I would think a Phenom II should be able to handle a city of 20,000 without issues. What's your GPU? It plays an important part as well.

32GB of RAM is overkill, 8GB should be enough.

I'm running the game on a 4770K @ 4.5 GHz, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 970. I was previously using a GTX 670 and that worked good too. I'm getting maybe 45 FPS with a big city.

and its simulation speed Im interested in - not FPS or anything like that.

I have i7-4770k @ stock 3.5GHz, 16GB DDR3 at 1333MHz (overclocked a few times, but my motherboard is problematic with 4.0GHz and 2133Mhz), anyway...

Once I passed around 150k population speed 3 was not speed 3 anymore but something like 2+. Now at over 400k population it doesn't even seem to be speed 2. If I set the game to speed 3 it takes more than 9 second for the game to run one cycle.

I don't think that any CPU would be able to keep running a fast speed once the city goes into hundreds of thousands Cims. Not sure is it the engine or the raw power, but probably both.

In my days, I had to upgrade to 4MB in order to run Photoshop. And it installed from floppy disks!
Meh... in my days I recall expanding my Sinclair ZX81 1k RAM with a whopping 16k RAM pack! I still had to learn and use assembly language to program anything sophisticated and to this day one of my favourite games of all time remains the 3D Monster Maze that ran on 1k RAM. Everything installed using audio cassette tape!

Back to the topic... my current system specs are: i7 2600k (not overclocked) GTX560Ti 16GB RAM and I've played over 600 hours of the game with acceptable performance with cities of all sizes up to 400k+, resolution at 175% and all graphics settings on high. As long as I can maintain 30fps for making videos, I'm happy. So the OP should have no problem.

I7-4770 (not a K, but the performance is roughly the same unless you overclock from what I've seen and it just gets better from there), gtx 780 and 16gb of ram and I have had no lag issues on anything I've tried so far (I personally have a city up to 100k but I may have played larger ones). You didn't mention your graphics card, which is also an important component. There's no way you'll need 32gb of RAM most likely.

thanks !

That processor should handle tje game just fine. My dual core i3-4370 (3.8GHz) with a GTX 960 4GB and 8G RAM can load my 425k pop city and it plays just fine. I get over 40fps and I do have simulation lag badly. X2 and X3 don't have any effect and my x1 speed is now about half what it should be. lol

Your processor should do better than mine. What video card do you have? If you use many mods/assets, then you may need more memory. But your 6-core should fill the default 9-tiles with relative ease. (over 250k pop.)

If you get bad lag, it is usally traffic issies. Balance your import/exports and make sure you have lots of highway access, especially directly to industry.

ps, My first computer was the Timex (yes, the watch company) Sinclair 1000 with 4k and optional 16k pack. It came with cassette adapter so I could type in my own basic programs and save them to cassette tapes. You had to save several times as it was random if it ever loaded. The longer it ran (bigger the file size) the less likely it would load.
