In my current Oda game I started as a 2 province kokujin. With a bit of luck I got 3 more provinces in mikawa (1 out of 3 or 4 games the Shiba do not invade mikawa first thus giving time to build retinues), solicited my liege for a daimyo title via diplomatic option which he gave me (note, we had a bethroal going on, might be important). After that I proceeded to expand inside my clan. The Imagawa invaded so I got 2 more provinces from them. Then our clan leader died, I dishonered his son below the threshold, got 3 vassals to join me and broke away. I took approximately 60% of the clan power with me and when he declared war on me for breaking away I finished him off.

You only have very little to do if you don't send your retinue in your leader's campaigns to try and grab the biggest slice of titles you can get. :)

That's the key to getting power. Get your personal retinue to a siege, first, and don't split/reorganize it once it is there and more of your clan's armies show up to help. Easy province grab!

Yes, also sometimes the AI will give you some kori. So you can get even more provinces. When I plotted I had risen to represent 30% of the clan's power. The most important thing is getting the daimyo title to be able to grow in number of provinces with your own vassals.

The true path to power from an humble start is:

1. Get retinue to enemy province first.
2. Wait for big stack from liege to arrive
3. Set lowest speed (easier to send your army first as the AI instantly decides where to move first)
4. Assault
5. Siege won
6. Back to 1

Repeat until you're strong enough and the opportunity to break away presents itself :)

Im afraid i havent had much luck as a single kori state. As Osumi i got caught up in a civil war against the Shimazu. Just as the rebel clan i belonged to was getting beaten i decided to join the Kikuchi clan. Then gradually they got caught up waging war against three clans. I tried to help but i hardly had any money to build up my forces. The Kikuchi did reward me with some new land, but the other clans quickly took it. Then after quite a long siege against my castle my original clan the Shimazu finally took it and end of my game. It seems to me its become a lot more tougher now playing a one state Kokujin with the new patch than it was before. It was interesting to watch but tough going.

I managed to become shogun with Azai and Mori in 1.01c Divided clans, and pretty much used the above tactic to get lands, in addition avoiding all the enemies' main stacks during the Onin War. Also helps that you try to aim for all the koris in a kuni if possible, so that you can at least become a daimyo and have vassals of your own.

It's also important that if u start out as part of the Onin War, forget about upgrading your kori in the first few years, just use your master of ceremonies to collect tax while your master of arms restore other, so that you can get the gold to get 500 ashigaru asap. Meanwhile your master of the guard can start hiring ninjas to ninja your leige's honour if your side is winning. Lastly, a lot of luck helps too!
