I often want to play a gene modding playthrough, but the chances of actually encountering the tech is so absurdly rare I almost never actually get round to it.

Often it takes decades before I get the vitalty boosters tech, and another few to get the uplift tech, and then ages more to get the Cloning, and then finally I get the gene modding tech when I'm pumping out battleships and my empire is too large to really bother.

This is all with a biology leader.

I feel as though the gene modding tech should come a little earlier, although potentially without habitat modding.

Yeah it seems you have to really specialize. Part of the problem is likely the "too large to bother" bit - it looks like you just made expansionistic decisions that do not go into the right direction. Your people are concentrating on something else. You have to spec science and concentrate on social tech, no dedicate yourself totally. Forget pumping out the battleships, get lots of social tech fast.

I had this problem as well. Funny thing, I got Psi Theory (rare tech) well before my 2nd perk in my Spiritualist game but didn't see Gene Tailoring (not rare tech) until my 3rd perk in my Bio game.

Another thing I noticed is Targetted Gene Expressions (required for 2nd tier of Bio Ascension) has a huge weight penalty if you are Egalitarian. That is horrible design. Bio is supposed to be the Ascend available to those who can't do Robo or Psi. Its practically blocked if you are Egal.

Also the Xenomorph Army (no ascend required) is objectively better than the Gene Warriors (ascend required).

I managed to get the techs and picked the ascension perk, but holy jesus the prospect of doing this is incredibly unappealing. In order to modify all of my pops I'd have to pay upwards of 70k bio tech points. No thanks, I'll take the free psionics next time.

Well since you basically force your population to genemod, egalitarians probably don't want you to do it to them ...
Forcing them to become robots or feeding them to an Elder God is fine, though ;)

if you are trying to mod your entire empire all at once i think you are doing it wrong. the big strength of the genetic ascension path is that you can quickly convert each planets population to something specifically designed to live and work on that planet. create primarily mining worlds and convert the pops their to industrious and very strong with the right habitability for that planet, then create a primarily energy producing planet and mod its pops to thrifty etc.

each project will only take months instead of years then. oh and you should probably make a biotech planet with intelligent and natural sociologist pops first to speed up the rest of the process.

No you see, this is for the best of everyone. To make everyone more equal. What kind of egoistic non egalitarian monster would oppose this?

Oh that's a good idea. That even fits perfectly with the hive mind ethics. Thanks!

Forcing them to become robots or feeding them to an Elder God is fine, though ;)

If everbody uploads, it's equality. Everbody becomes, stronger, smarter and better with technology. Genemodding specializes, or to use another word, discriminates. Some people are forever locked into risky blue collar mining jobs, while others become hereditary cognitive geniuses operating out of glittering corporate enclaves. High tech - low life. ;) Maybe such research is frowned upon in free societies.

But it could still be a bug...
