Currently, I'm trying it, and it's going alright. I waited until May 19th, 1940, when the Germans started getting bogged down in France and Belgium before launching an attack on their eastern border...

They had Slovakia as a puppet, and I expected Finland to join them as revenge for my the Winter War, and I wasn't surprised when Romania and Bulgaria joined the Axis too (Romania is still Social Liberal, though, lol).

What was unexpected, however, was that, shortly after, Greece declared war on me, but independantly of the Axis, so they're not at war with the Allies, too. Yugoslavia, however, joined the Axis. The southern front, however, has seen so fighting, as none of the smaller nations are willing to commit troops just yet.

What puzzles me, though, is that Hungary, of all nations, hasn't declared war on me or even joined the Axis, despite getting a peice of Slovakia when the Germans took it.

Italy, too, hasn't joined the Axis, though they're probably event-based for once Paris falls. Though Paris may stand, as the Germans are already diverting about 25% of their western army towards the east, and France has already taken back peices of Belgium...Belgium stays in the war still, as Ghent never fell.

I may have screwed up history, but it appears to be for the better. Berlin is already in my sights.

EDIT: Wow, I'm always amazed at the game's versatility. Yugoslavia actually had an event, "This is a Mistake: Break the Pact of Steel", and they made peace with me (and the allies), dropping out of the Axis. Germany then had an event, "Prepare to Invade Yugoslavia". It's so interesting so see events that are completely unhistorical scripted into the game. Always new and exciting. Good job, Paradox!

Just noticed, the Yugoslavian government changes...looks like their king even abdicates in favour of his son...interesting, interesting...makes me regret not making an AAR out of it.

Actually Pavle wasn't the father of Peter II. he was the cousin of Alexander I and took power after his death because Peter II was only 11 back them.

more info about it here and here

Edit: but it would made a nice AAR, yugoslavia is always interesting:D

um, just a note, the yugos breaking the pact of steel was in fact a historical decision. That said, sounds like you're doing well. I think the SU still has a pretty bad GDE modifier in 1940, so good job on your assault. Let us know how you're doing.

I invaded Germany once or twice while they were busy in France , but game gets boring fast as they cant fight on two fronts, even with penalty you should have no problem.

As for dows on you , its common, i had whole of Balkans doing that + Brazil at some point even tho none were in Axis.

What did you do with Finland? In my game Germany dow them for some reason so they get put into Allies, then Fins dow me and there i had some 3 way bashing for a while :)

As USSR it is very easy to annex Germany. I acheived it myself by late '37 after a war with Poland. I then went on to fight the Allies in France.

No, it's the opposite actually. It highlights the rigid nature of the scripting system for events. The event is a HISTORICAL event that happened IRL for completely different reasons. In HOI2 whenever yugo joins the axis it always betrays them with that event no matter what the circumstances are.

Ya it sounds pretty normal so far when the USSR dows Germany early. The Balkans tend to jump on board to stop the communist horde, and Hungary usually doesn't join AI Germany until near the Fall of France or shortly after. They may or may not join now because the French are holding the Germans in the West.

I usually opt for a slightly more historical dow. I wait until the Germans come but stall them in Eastern Poland, and launch constant counterattacks and drain their MP. By '42 Germany is out of MP and the GDE modifier is normal, so it's easy to steamroll them.

Heh Yugoslavia AI chose to stay in Axis in my ongoing Germany game, they even annexed Greece ;)

It's ridiculously low chance tho , 5% or something probably

Portugal even decided to join the Axis, even as Romania and Hungary are annexed. I'm certain that Spain would've jumped on the fascist bandwagon, had the Republicans not won the civil war in my game.

Interestingly, in my game, without even setting foot in Bulgaria, they switched sides and became my puppet...although their King, Boris III (or is he "Tsar"? Whatever) is still "king", although his name is now "Comrade Boris Coburg". I guess this represents the fact that Bulgaria didn't officially become a republic until after the war was over - of course, old Boris died before then. Still, interesting that they have him in there as a Stalinist Head of State.

I'm hoping that Bulgaria eventually gets and event changing their flag and HoS, though.

As for the question someone had about Finland, they declared war on me the exact moment I DoW'd Germany, making them join the Axis. This immediately put them at war with the Allies, so no "three-way bashing" for me. Not that they lasted long...a week or two, because they gave up all their mountain and forrest provinces to me in the Winter War, making it easy to get their three plains-based Victory Points.

What I find REALLY hilarious is that not only are the French (and free Belgian and Dutch troops, as well as British and Canadians) able to hold the Germans in the Ardennes, the French have positively steamrolled over northern Italy. They've already taken Venice.

You know your army is bad when it loses to the French.

I believe that the SU has enough power to basically "Human Wave" through Poland(area) to Berlin, and maybe farther if France doesn't attempt to attack. Against Germany, I've seen a 1938 Germany sandwiched between France and SU(Annexed by 9/1939), meaning that even with near-starting armies, if both France and SU are against Germany, it doesn't stand a chance.

Nin, I think we have a VERY similar game, except the SU was the one attacking France.

If you had waited for Germany to get the Vichy event, then you could immediately DoW Germany while almost all of their troops are in the West. This way you eventually end up owning all of Western Europe contrasted with your current game where you are sharing Europe with the Allies.
