I remember in this one game a couple weeks ago, my guy had like 5-6 duke titles, a handful of count titles, and a king title. This is coming from being only a count to begin with (Count of Leon). At one point I was only making like 10% or something small like that for income due to my king and his heir (a count) for the most part hording the titles.

Eventually I did distribute the titles, which I made a bunch of counts, but no dukes at that time. I didn't want to give away any duke titles either. Granted, that's probably not the best method but for some reason, for that particular game, I was hellbent on keeping all the power to myself.

Anyone else suffer from hording power sometimes?

:D

I sometimes find myself doing this when I have accumulated several titles of one tier before moving up (e.g Duke-> King). Then there's sometimes a slight reluctance to hand them out on my part. I also sometimes keep hold of Duke titles when King if the counties they cover are within my demense. FI, my current game I am King of Jerusalem and Egypt, Duke of Jerusalem and Alexandria. Makes sense I think.

For role-play purposes I sometimes make a point of always retaining a particular title - usually a county - if its the one my dynasty started with. Keeping control of the "homeland" becomes a habit even when its not a very rich province and could be swopped for a better one within the demense limit. I find CK is at its best with a certain amount of immersion.

Seconded. I ALWAYS hang on to Anjou and Tourraine, seen as I always start with Count Foulques from Tourraine, hah. Problem is, if I lose it, I go all ballistic and try to get it back, and usually fail badly and get a game over. =(

As for count titles, I try to have a few for myself: 1-2 for me, 1 for the heir and 1 for the heir to create a bishopric when follows daddy.

As a king I give out duke titles rarely. The reason is simple: The given out duke title in a duchy populated by numerous families means that those families will be stripped of their land by their duke.
Since I like to have as many families as possible, I give out duke level titles only when the duchy is empty.

Generally, I won't give out titles unless I also own the higher-level title that they are considered to normally pledge to. For example, if I'm King of Poland, I don't mind making someone the Duke of Mazovia, because if things go badly and they break away, they'll repledge to me eventually, but I won't make anyone the Duke of Aquitaine unless I also happen to own the title of King of France.

I tend to only grant members of my family, estates the same with duke titels. King titels I keep for myself tough.

I don't necessarily horde titles, but what I like to do is to keep atleast one territory in each Kingdom that I hold, kind of like a Royal demense for each realm. For instance, in one game, I created the Kingdom of Syria and then Jerusalem. I hold Palmyra/Damascus as the territories of the King of Syria and Acre/Tiberias/Tyre as the King of Jerusalem (I can never bring myself to govern the Holy Land from Jerusalem. Always end up in Jaffa, Ascalon, Acre or Tyre.

I do enjoy hording titles.... However I like to wait to give the titles to sons. The daughters I marry to men inside my court and sometimes grant the men the Duchies but normally they go to a son.

The Husbands of my daughters get counties. lol But I see no problem hording titles. I think it your own preference.

Lol, I am very much the same at the moment. I started off as the Duke of Catalonia, and now I'm also the Duke of Valencia, Toledo and the Spanish Marches. I'm also the count of 5 provencies, however I will give two of those provencies to an heir when I have one. Siomething similar toe the Prince of Wales set up in England. Close to becoming King of Aragon, woop

My modus operandi is to hold on to my starting province(s). I usually play the 1066 scenario which starts with underdeveloped provinces, so over time there's much financial and emotional input there as well. When the realm grows, I give the province to the heir. This way, it remains in the family :D

Only time I hoarded titles was when I role-played the power-crazed Duke of Dauphine, Doumenge d'Albon. He had about 17 duke and 12 count titles, and was embroiled in a bitter war of attrition with the Capet Kingdom of France, Burgundy, Germany and Italy. I forgot about BB, was 'hated throughout', and didn't bother to force-vassalised after that (the counts just kept declaring war). Doumenge finally did fulfill the family dream, which was to have the crown of Burgundy back in Occitan hands, but at devastating cost. One could say I got so immersed in the role play and dynastic rivalry that I just got carried away, LOL.

I started a 1066 campaign as the Piast dynasty in Poland (specifically as the king) I've held onto my original provinces and rearranged my realm a bit so that I personally hold 7 connected provinces in southern Poland. I'm also the King of Lithuania now and I control Prussia. In total I have only 5 vassals (all Dukes) and of the 5, 3 are directly related to me. It's not quite the same as what the OP describes but to me that's as much hording power as having a massive demense. I had 1 Duke rebel (a russian one) and you should have seen how fast he was stomped since all of poland proper is in family hands.

I've been toying with the idea of making my nephew the king of Lithuania but so far I enjoy the power too much. A Piast on 3 thrones (Poland, Lithuania and Rus) is a future goal. Maybe even Hungary....... one can dream.

On a side note the Byzantines consistantly having a large presence in Russia is getting on my nerves. Sure the Russians looked to Constantinople for support but direct vassalization is a pain.

I sometimes see that.

I also investigated how that happens, so:
There is a duke in the Byzantine empire who has a Rurikovich duke in Russia as possible heir. When this Rurkovich takes over his duchy (and later receives some heritage from russian lands) he will become the most powerful Byz vassal and heir to the throne.

I don't remember who this guy is, or what duchy this is, but I came to this conclusion some time ago...

Back to OP's post, the 10% is your demense efficiency?

I'm not sure about this, but can anyone confirm if having prolonged inefficiency will lead to the ruler having the 'stressed' attribute?

Yeah, I sometimes horde it, but only when I'm about to get up to the next level of ruler. After that, I distribute the titles until I get an efficiency at least at 90% so I can give a bit of land for my first born.
