Find the Demo boring?

I can guarantee that I won't be playing many of those battlescenarios, maybe in MP once in a while.

Not boring, a bit unbalanced, with the Allies definately underpowered. However, I've played the demo a few times and it just made me realize what I've always known: I don't want to be a general, I want to have strategic control, I want to direct my nation and armed forces in the direction needed. Battlescenarios are too "small". In other Paradox games I only play GC. My guess is I'll be doing this with HoI2 too. Although I will try Barbarossa some day to undo the zillion of mistakes Stalin made (though I'm afraid the Red Army is made too weak, like the Allies in the demo).

Of course, but the scenario should be harder for the germans to pull off, not the allies.

True, but in the end it's not that important. I'd rather have Paradox balancing out the GC, than using their precious time making sure all the various battle scenarios are well balanced.

I was supprised that the Germans had so many more infantry divisions than the allies. Maybe the allies need to have more divisions that are stationary (but with events to let them move again when the germans take out certain provinces), or just to get re-inforced faster.

Note the problem that anyone developing a major game has, though: do you release a demo or not?

If you don't, people get fretful and you miss out the chance of whetting appetites, and everyone has to learn the full game on release instead of getting used to the system.

If you release a demo of the full game before release, people will criticise it as though it was the final version, and they won't have the full manual to understand it, and you risk losing goodwill.

If you release a demo of a smaller version (as in this case), people will criticise it for not being the full game.

The thread expresses a perfectly valid standpoint: I tend to prefer the big campaigns too, though the battles have the virtue that you can FINISH a two-player or solo game in a short session. But anyway I think it was a good idea to release a demo of a small scenario. Just bear in mind that it's a demo, not the game, in the same way that a picture of a living room in a house you might buy is not the whole house...

Demos

I like when companies release the tutorial as a demo. Gives a flavor of the game, allows you to begin learning the game so you're up to speed when the game arrives, but doesn't let you get the full benefit of the game. There have been some games that I played the demo and then had no need to play the game. I would have loved to get the tutorial of this one, but I can see how that would not work with this game system.

What Suvorov said. When I get to play General, I want to do it with *my* armies, put together and named the way *I* want it, led by the leaders *I* assigned them. I don't like playing with someone else's army.

Let me guess:

You always play from 1936 and never from 1939, 1941 or 1944?

To paraphrase a certain defense secretary: "you have to fight with the army you have, not with the army you wish". ;)

But basicly I agree. And yes, I too always start the earliest possible date (1936 for hoi, 1836 vic etc). The only exception would be EU2, where I'd prefer a late 15c early 16c start, especially when playing England.

Well, that depends on how its done. In HOI1 a 1936 start was usually sufficient to conquer the world with New Zealand!

1936 is good provided its a bit more "realistic". (Nooooooooooooo don't start that topic again.)
