You never know the cause when it's Skyrim. Maybe even some new mod. Whats the benefit for Valve when the list isn't accurate? I think that would be quite a PR disaster.
Steamspy does, apparently, have owner numbers at the moment. Which, considering Steamspy doesn't have all of the Kickstarter backers, is a rather easy way of figuring out how many 'new' people have been acquired.

Um... It says "1,524 ± 2,111". Apparently, there's a possibility that a negative number of copies of the game were sold; that's not going to help with "in success"!Steamspy does, apparently, have owner numbers at the moment. Those numbers have been the same for months. Does it actually count pre-orders as people owning the game?
It does not say "-2,111", it says "± 2,111", "plus/minus 2,111", there is a big difference... seeing as "± 2,111" could mean just that, anywhere from 1524 +2111 owners, to 1524 -2111 owners. All this number is, the "± 2,111", is a standard statistical margin of error thing that you use for statistical quantity of what ever it may be.For all we know, that -2,111 owners could have been the review copies that were sent out.

Also, SteamSpy them selves say that: "Additionally, stats for games with smaller samples are very unreliable. I wouldn't trust any number below 30,000." So, in a sence the current numbers for BattleTech on SteamSpy could just be considered to be placeholders untill the "real" numbers (30000+ or so) actually start to show up in the coming X time (not sure how often they update the numbers).
I quest if that page is really accurate.
It had Skyrim Special Edition as selling higher than much newer, more popular games.
Same here, I would have backed the KS if I had known about it at the time.
