I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this happen in my first Utopia game.
Basically, there was a large, fanatically xenophobic slaver kingdom that was the top dog in the galaxy throughout the 23rd century. In the early 24th century, however, one of it's slave planets rebelled while the kingdom was busy warring with one of its neighbors. The slavers initially just ignored the rebelling planet, figuring that they would just retake it in a more conventional time.
They didn't expect another powerful empire to get involved and actually start a war in support of the rebels, though.
The kingdom was now facing a war on two fronts, and ended up catastrophically losing on both. The rebels were actually substantially rewarded in the peace treaty, and ended up receiving an additional 4 systems. Throughout the course of the 24th century, in a series of opportunistic wars, the rebel egalitarian empire ended up conquering most of it's former masters' land and ended up becoming a major galactic power in and of itself.
Something like this never happened to me in the old versions. Did anyone else see a rebel empire in their game end up becoming successful in the long run?
