Another incentive to grow wide instead of tall, because its faster and cheaper to expand than develop.

Only as far as you need to grow to become a kingdom. Most players start as a kingdom anyway, or intend to form one fairly quickly. (The main exception would be playing as Austria or something, where you're prevented from ascending by HRE politics rather than not being big enough.)

Also, growing wide takes a lot of diplomat man-hours, whereas growing tall doesn't really need diplomats.

Personally I would just keep ranks having very slight modifiers and bring back unique buildings. I don't understand why the new building system had to remove them.
Under EU4's constraints, the only unique building that actually needed to be a building was the March - and good riddance to it!

All of the others could have been perfectly well converted to national decisions, government effects, or technology level effects.

Because that one free diplomat was very, very handy. Right now I can either go straight for Diplomatic Ideas or just deal with it. (Or hope that I'm playing one of the nations who get an extra diplomat.)

Before Common Sense I never really thought about it. It was just something you built whenever you had the money for it. Because three diplomats are always better than tree.

And now I realize how much I had depended on that one diplomat.

What are your coping strategies for having one less diplomat in the game? (Honestly curious, as I'd love to read if I perhaps missed something. :) )

Especially republics have a hard time to get any extra diplomats without taking diplo ideas..

King rank gives +1 diplomat in 1.13.

This will not work very well for those who want to stay small and tall (not enough provinces to hold enough development to upgrade in a reasonable timeframe). Or for countries that are "stuck" at duchy rank and can't move upward in rank. I can think of few other issues.

But I will just say this: Give those exceptions countries a way to get extra diplomat please since they are either stuck at duchy or staying small they need that extra diplomat more because of it. While blobbing empires don't really need that extra diplomat as badly.

So you mean subjects of much larger nations and non-elector members of the HRE that can't leave the empire?
Also native council, independent daimyo and religious orders. Granted the first doesn't really make any difference since you could only build embassy after reforming which I presume will turn you into Kingdom if without CS or be probably be big enough to do it by then with CS.

What I liked most about the unique buildings were the roleplaying possibilities. Great for flavor and adding differentiating elements to provinces.
Maybe make them money sinks that neither affect mechanics in any way nor take up any building slots?

You meant something like patrician castle in CK2? The problem become how do you abstraction someone taking your capital where your unique building are?

About Duchy rank: Pretty much what chrnno said.

No problem!

In Crusader King 2 you could play as a patrician family part of the merchant republic (the same republic you see in venice/hansa in EU4 but with feuding family and what not).

Technically they are the only countries where you can play as a "unlanded noble" but it doesn't make sense for them to have nothing to upgrade/work on. So they have a house where you can upgrade your wings of your house. But hostile countries and what not can not touch it even at war while at the same time raise levies from your house. The reason nobody can touch it is because it is not present on the map. They can still siege your Doge's City and your trade ports to hurt you.

Moving to EU4. Having an "unique" building that is not present on the capital of your countries is awkward and weird. Especially since you would have to abstraction moving your unique building from capital to capital.

I know of several ways. 3 different idea groups give diplomats.

As far I know only one aristocratic military idea group give a diplomat. It is not feasible to take military idea group first and tank your military tech early on.

While you certainly can pick diplomacy or the lackluster espionage idea group and tank your diplomat tech no problem mostly. But other idea can be more powerful as a first pick than diplomacy and espionage depending on the situation.

However if you are starting as a country that NEED an admin idea group as first pick to perform well. Religious as Muscovy into sunni horde land as a good example. Then you are pretty out of luck if you are a duchy rank. I know the muscovy example is not prefect because they are not a duchy but you get the idea. Pun intended.

We should be able to build and pay maintenance fees on consulates and embassies in foreign capitals. We'd have to request permissoon to build them. They'd be suspended if we want or kicked out if we're at war with the country.

Consulates should slowly improve relations over time and help you not get embargoed. Embassies should help you moderately improve relations over time and help cancel out agressive expansion penalty with that nation.

Further advanced, they could also give espionage boosts, however they'd risk getting kicked out for a couple of years.

Genuinely curious to know what people are using all these diplomats for. It is my understanding that coalitions are a response to AE, not general opinion, so aside from shoring up opinions for the sake of alliances here and there, my armies typically do most of the talking. Even keeping relations high for the sake of avoiding conflict seems pointless since your neighbor could be +200 one month then -200 from "Wants your provinces" the next.
