I think the main answers in this thread are going to be "Red Storm Rising" and "The Hunt for Red October". Thats what I would recommend at least if youve missed them. :)

Patrick Robinsons series based around his Arnold Morgan character - the writing is as good as Clancy (very similar actually) but the plot of all his books is based on post-CW naval warfare. There's enough extra-marital affairs, cringe-worthy intimate scenes and character study to be a very entertaining thriller series.

The guy did the biography of Sandy Woodward (commander of the RN Falklands Taskforce) and he was an advisor for the series (and a homage character appears in a lot of the novels) so it's based around relative facts.
