I'm running battletech advanced 3062 mod and have been dropping 7 mechs for a while now. (The upgrade for the 8th is expensive) it's a lot of fun but it doubles the time of a mission.
The BATTLETECH Campaign starts the Player off in a Leopard Dropship and it has indeed already had its Aerospace Fighter Bays converted to a 5th and 6th Mech Bay. : )I remember reading a novel where they fit 2 light mechs in a single cubicle. And i remember seeing in Sarna that one can adapt a mech cubicle to hold 1 heavy or 2 light vehicles.
Maybe a change even lighter on balance is allowing us use of the last 2 cubicles of our Leopard. They aren´t holding ASFs after all.
This way one could drop a short company, but would have to use light vehicle and/or mechs.
hum... i read this thread and i have a question... what exaktly have Argo Upgrades and an second Lance to do with each other?
i mean: its a thing of Leadership-Skills of the Commander and Logistics, isnt it?
the Skill is clear, if you are expierenced enough to lead 7 Pilots into battle... why not? we are Mercs, why we should care much about rules like Lance sizes?
and the Logistics is clear too: to field a second Lance you need 2 LZs that are big enough for a second Leopard or 1 LZ that is used twice so that the second Lance is dropped with delay (okay we could use Drop-Pods toothey could be an Argo-Upgrade )
the second Leopard could be gathered by a Flashpoint for example, but thats more a suggestion, sorry
but the main Issue on fielding 2 Lances is the Ability to coordinate your pilots or am i wrong?
I guess I'm going to have to take the contrary opinion and say I do not want to manage more than a single lance. Turned-based battles in this game with just four mechs already take upwards of 30 minutes each. I've had a few approach an hour, and this is with the game's relatively small maps. I do not need even more mechs drawing out the length of the battles.
In BTA, I just started and have the ability to drop 5 mechs total with, I think, a max weight of 450 tons (basically on 50 tons on the second Leopard).
The larger maps feel nice, and it seems like BTA has opened up the default sight distance somewhat (and they can extend further with enhaced tech) as well as maybe extended the zoom out range. Altogether those things combined to make a contract where I felt like I had more and better tactical options to manage the fight.
Is it a second Leopard? Or is it just using the aerospace area (a Leopard can carry 2 aerospace fighters) to carry some mechs (the lightest ones) instead? Much like how the space craft area of the Argo is used in the core game to give us the third mech bay...In BTA, I just started and have the ability to drop 5 mechs total with, I think, a max weight of 450 tons (basically on 50 tons on the second Leopard).

its part of the roleplay.....and how the mod is desgined to work.
you dont just get the ability to drop 2 lances.
you have to work at it.
its all explained in the upgrades and events
your crew finds a barely flyable..its basically flying junker of a leopard.
you get it and start working on it via its own set of upgrades in the engineering screen.
you have to repair and upgrade various parts of the junker in order to make it safe to use in a drop.
just like with the argo.
you dont get the ability to have 18 mechs in the mech bay right off right?
you have to repiar and upgrade to get that far.
so with this 2nd leopard you have to repiar the ship step by step...upgrade its command and control..etc
i think it's a forgone conclusion that those that want to be able to control a second lance would also like/expect the map size to be increased to accommodate the increased unit size.
If not, having the 2nd lance would be pointless as it wouldn't be bringing anything new to the table.
as i have mentioned...mission control does increase map boundaries ( and it is configurable ) and its sub-mod bigger drops allows for 2nd lance.
so the ability to go beyond 1 lance and increase maps size it out there for anyone who wants it.
this is one of the reasons HBS gave us the ability to mod the game......
so that folks can take the vanilla and make of it what we will and the engine will allow.
You Sir are a Pillar of our BATTLETECH Community! Thanks for the nice comments on Mission Control, guys. More good stuff to come!
