I've been playing this game on and off for ages, and I always find that for the Soviets the game is very boring til Europe gets going, so I am thinking of alternative openings instead of the usual rubbish of build up and wait.

Noone seems to be receptive of my bribes and attempts to coup them to my Stalinist way of thinking so that all seems a waste of money, as does stealing techs cos more often than not the blueprints are on naval tech's or strategy that I cant ever use.

I've had some success with taking on china ( and its various denominations ) but when i go into Tibet the Japs signed an anti-commy pact and attacked while my forces were already tied up.

Afganistan, Persia and Turkey are all Brit guarantees, as of course is India and Iraq ( puppets ) so it all seems a little like build up and wait is all I can do.

When is the earliest I can go into the Balkans without really upsetting the normal game timeline, plus any other suggestions would be gratefully received and play tested.

I sometimes go for the japs and a united chinese puppet. Attack manchuria and the japs as soon as your troops have arrived and are reinforced. Then rush over manchuria and korea as fast as you can, and then go on to conquer all of china (i prefer taking out the warlords + commies first, and then going for the nats from all sides).

If something strange happens (ENG dowing you or something like that) just reload as them and force a white peace with acceptall.

Don't go to balkans before 1940 or you will trigger a massive world war with everyone fighting everyone else most likely. It happened whenever I played with Yugo and DOW-ed people before the GOIs expire.

But really, the buildup period is rather nice, you get plenty of time to shape up your army in any way you want.

It's nigh impossible to do anything creative with soviets before the nazis dow you as your GDE (=Ground defense efficiency) is something like 0.2-0.3 and this means that you need somewhat huge force to take down anything.... With some modding this is easy to overcome ;)

I'd recomend small pockets of defense with reservists about yay provinces behind them to form a M formation of Defenses. There's a chance they AI would see this as an oppurtunity to encircle your Outpost'd forces, but when they attempt an encirclement, have your Outposts attack their supply route, while your Reservists from behind kill their army. It's a tactic similar to the one used by the Soviet commander of the defense of Kursk.

Still working on it

Well I did a total land based army the most recent time ... had more infantry than the standard waking the giant scenario and had in addition at least 100 garison divisions that i thought would be able to stem the time, but alas no ... the germans still rolled over me like a wave across a beach and what i never knew before was that once garisons are defeated they are eliminated and not pushed back ( or at least mine were ).

Will be trying different tactics soon, the M defence sounds tempting but now my other real gripe is why the 'auto-promote' doesnt seem to be working on my versoin - dohhhhh

Do you have Auto-Promote turned on? Are you building lots of troops?... the number of promotions is directly related to the size of your army.

For a completely different strategy for the USSR... a huge STRAT-Bomber and MR-Fighter force instead of a huge Infantry army... read my "Are STRAT Bombers Worthless?" thread in the Doomsday Forum. The USSR game is towards the end of the thread.

Another strategy that came up in my mind but one that I have never tested would be to research Guerrilla Warfare in your Land Doctrine technologies and do something similar to the M strategy but with a little twist.

First off, you should create about 10-12 Infantry divisions, and place them in a M formation. When the Krautz attack get close, attack them with the front part of the M formation, good chance you would lose, but that's alright. Just before the battle ends automatically, pull back your attacking Divisions and wait for them to regroup. When regrouped, have them fall back behind the backside of the M formation to create another M formation.

Keep doing this, as this is moar of a Fighting Retreat, and the big thing about this is that the Guerrilla Warfare strategy allows your Divisions to recover Organization quicker and thus allows you to attack at full strength faster. Another factor in this is you two's warring economies. Germany has a lower IC than the Soviets and thus you could recooperate moar Strength from your Manpower at a faster rate than the Germans can.

After each Guerrilla attack, have your bombers further bombard away their strength.

And now I'm going to read Emu's STRAT bomber thread.

Guerrilla Warfare is a 1944 tech. Even in 1942, you would be researching it with a -90% penalty. It would take at least another year (1943+) to complete... much too late to oppose Barbarossa.

to answer your question, ill establish my own suggestion:

you are russian, so the first most important thing is loads of infantry. keep making infantry constantly.

a lot of Motorized divs are great as russia, they will help you encircle small numbers of German divisions.

a significant number of Armored divs are great, since you have loads of fuel.

get many HQ's for your forces, as they will increase your supply efficiency and will allow you to double your command limit (idk if its cumulative with other HQ's though)

for airforce, make many interceptors and many TAC's. anything else would be a waste of research.

for sea forces, though you shouldnt really concern much about it till later in the game, should be the Cruizerg tactic.

Best Effort So Far

Just got going with a real stick it to the gerries game ... after learning how to use the autopromote properly ( great for the soviets esp after the purge ) plus the dissent bonus to work out a great strategy.

Use everything to go into China the second after japan does to get lots of experience and leader traits, then once you get down to the mountains just keep gaining exp til you accept a big terrotory gain just before moving troops into position to do the finish war.

Days before you accept the ceasefire you then declare war on the balcans and once you then move troops down from finland to crush the balcans you then go quickly back to finland, redeclare war and puppet them.

I also use my decrepid navy for trades to get supplies and such out of the allies. I did think about having a huge sub task force to go after convoys but everytime i try it i dont have much luck.

So now I got hundreds of high exp troops, medium armour, mobile artillery and tac bombers all with great leaders and the finish extra units instead of another front to protect.

I did try to take out romania and have bulgaria turn to commie but it was too early and the gerries just diverted stuff away from the main front to come down.

Next time I will position more stuff just off the front line and create a fake soft mid section to allow them to pur into before closing the trap and wiping out the gerry armour and troops, THEN puppet Romania, have Bulgaria join me and be swarming over Germany by mid 1942 ... i hope.

I like researching superheavy battleships early, since once you get them they never really go obsolete. It's just the US and Japan that are better off with carriers, for everyone else going for the big guns is awesome. :D
