I know galleys have a bonus in inland sea, or something, but what's the point of light ships other than patrolling for pirates, do they have an actual combat role?

Also good for anti-pirate patrolling.Light ships:
Cheaper to build
Faster to build
Move faster (which helps both exploration and positioning)
Cheaper to maintain
They're great for burgeoning colonial empires. Until you get rich, it is difficult to maintain 100% tariff efficiency with just big ships.
Light ships die so easily though.Huh, That is why warfare is slightly different in DW than in IN or even HTTT.
Also it is + for the patch - it made the whole positioning better than it was. Now it is like, that armies of certain size are better than making doomstacks (atrition, and front ofc.), and making fleets that are not TOO big is better than making fleets of hunderds of ships (not much of naval battles got more than hundred ships (compared to those that did not got so big fleets)).

A fleet of light ships and heavy ships will generally beat a heavy ship fleet, because light ships do mostly shock damage and provide better positioning.
Of course, the best way to win most sea battles is to simply have more ships or a better admiral.
Protect homeland : Swarm of frigates.
Invade people : big ships
(I'm not an expert btw)
