Title says it all. My understanding is there's no official release date, but has there been any news on an approximate time? I have no idea if I should be expecting a 2017 release, a late 2015 release, Q1 2016, etc.

Besides the Feb date they had on steam and that they told wasn't true? No idea. The game is in late/mid? alpha so I am predicted a 2016 release.

Q1 2016 seems to be the beta. Right now the game seems to have a playable mode with features between alpha and the start of beta.

So could be Q2-4 in 2016. Scandinavian and Iceland software dev cycles seem to be slightly longer than California's.

It also depends on HoI4's release date, as they've said they won't release the two too close together. I'm thinking a September or October 2016 release assuming HoI comes out sometime in May. If we get HoI shockingly early (January or February) we could maybe see Stellaris in May or June. Of course, this is all just guessing based on when it seems likely HoI4 will be done (refer to any of the threads on that topic in the HoI4 forum, estimates range from February to June of 2016, with May being one of the more frequently suggested dates)

It has been stated it is late alpha. Devs have also said Stellaris is developed according to the new policy 'annnounce games once they are in late alpha so release date isn't extremely faraway'
Johan (?) has also stated that Stellaris is going to be released few months after HoI4 and HoI4 has just entered open beta so I guess its release isn't faraway.

Another hint is the amount of Developer Diaries - so far Stellaris had almost 9, HoI4 has 33 so far, EU4 had 45 before release, so I think 35-40 DDs is a reasonable expectation. They come out every week, so according to these calculations Stellaris would be released in June 2016.

And that's when I'd expect it, June-August 2016.

The interview with the CEO of Paradox publisher with AngryJoe is available on youtube for those that can find it. That's where the decision or explanation there of, for why they are focusing on a few recent title releases, instead of putting marketing power into games that don't release and sometimes get canceled. Sots2 debacle was also brought up, since Joe was pretty excited and pushing for that game before it released.

They said here that they plan to release DDs every week or so, but I also remember a perhaps early phrase that the DDs would accelerate near release time.

Cities Skyline and Pillars of Eternity were released using the new marketing strategy, and given the numbers success, they should have maintained it for the foreseeable future.

Paradox internal developer team is underneath in that hierarchy, but that just means they would get the word first. That would put the marketing and release date changes to about 1-2 years ago.

Imo that'd be too late, as I said Developer Diaries cycle should be finished by June (mathematically speaking) and the game is already in late alpha.
Then they would just replace ordinary DDs with AARs. Weekly DDs are not necessarily a sign of advanced progress when a new IP is being concerned.

As for the OP - when it's ready.

All I've seen is screenshots with the word "Alpha" in the bottom right corner, which implies nothing about how late or early the alpha is.

yes it's been confirmed. pre and early alpha are more about just getting features added and stabilised, while late or approved alpha is more about keeping things stable while adding less and less new features. this is the stage HOI 4 is now in, the later part of the alpha.

There's various previews and interviews, which collate various features available in the build 3 months ago. Showing end game crisis may be just injecting events into a phase 1 game timewise, but they wouldn't have put their production pipes to work on end game events if the early game wasn't pretty much fixed in structure, awaiting the content to be generated.

There was mention of one feature not in the game, and another mention of another feature not being resolved as of this time in a dev diary. Don't remember which one, but the number of features listed as being ambiguous, has been pretty small.

Military values, economic values, and diplomatic options can be tweaked in beta, but until the alpha build has locked in a certain feature, they can't produce content for it yet via their production pipeline.

I'm using the development cycle of Pillars of Eternity via the kickstarter open source, as a comparison. Obsidian produced a very transparent progress that made it easy to see how the build changed over time, at least in the beta. There were some features that were still alpha, in the beta, such as ranger features. Which ultimately was flatlined and replaced with a simpler unity code. Obsidian was using a new engine, with their own unique pipelines and 2d mapping techniques. Paradox should have a smoother setup by now if they are using their in house Clausewitz engine. Generally, it's easy to gauge the level of a build by looking at the UI changes and various tertiary priorities. Once the UI starts changing in stages, that means the features are being locked down and resources can now be released for non critical priorities. Early alpha or middle alpha would have a baseline UI with paceholder art, since it's pointless crafting a user interface for the user when the features themselves are not set in stone.

it's been quite a while so your going to have to search yourself or hope someone else posts links, but this has been common knowledge for months. the big announcement that came after the multiplayer preview was either july or august so you wouldn't have heard about it having joined in september.

it's been quite a while so your going to have to search yourself or hope someone else posts links, but this has been common knowledge for months. the big announcement that came after the multiplayer preview was either july or august so you wouldn't have heard about it having joined in september.

I meant, do you have a link for where a dev has said stellaris is in late alpha, I'm not really following HoI4 development.

Your speculation that the game is in late alpha is perfectly plausible, but it remains just that: speculation.

Every time someone brings up the release date, everyone goes around saying "oh, the game is already confirmed to be in late alpha, you know. actually that was months ago. it was late alpha in september so must be late-late alpha by now. super double late alpha, really. penultimate late alpha dance remix edition by end of november i'm sure thats been confirmed too. the beta test will start any minute just you see" and I'm just wondering where this supposed "late alpha" confirmation is.

Oh, and every company has their own ideas about what "alpha testing" actually means. About the only constant is that alpha comes before beta, and that alpha testing is internal only where beta testing brings in dudes from outside. So, the way other companies do it might not be too relevant. And I don't know that "late alpha" is a term anyone would really recognize as a defined phase of development.

Somewhere in q3-q4 in 2016
How HOI fares will affect stellaris, if HoI has a smooth release without major patching issues or weird thing i assume people will be diverted to stellaris thus expediting its release, however if significant resources cant be diverted from hoi to stellaris and/or some major issues in it dont crop up requiring major rework it could be delayed to 2017.
