What's interesting is that, if there aren't really any similarities beyond both being 4Xs with similar mechanics (as it looks and sounds right now), and the "Age of Wonders" is just a branding ploy, then that would basically make this Triumph's Europa Universalis: Rome - a name Paradox ultimately regretted, and moved away from, on the same day this was announced.

I was wondering the same, this game has me both a bit hyped and frightened... it may be cool, but only if we have a very weird future with sci-fi and magic/mystic elements (at least from my point of view), otherwise it can be a "Age of wonders kind of game but in space and high tech things", aka Beyond earth. Also frightened because this might mean that no AoW4 will be released, or at least not in the next 5+ years...

So, we will have to wait and know more details... at least is what I will do

PS: I know this is not the place to ask this, but what happened to the "helpful", "agree" and "respectully disagree" options?

I´d prefer an entirely new setting/universe over the old one evolving into sifi. Ragarding AoW4, I almost have no doubt it will be released eventually, but I´d be very surprised to see it before planatfall, and all of its expansions(if there will be any), are done.

So far, it doesn't sound like an evolvement from the same world the other Age of Wonders took place on. It looks a lot more like some paralel world. AoW does take place in a multiverse.

So far, it doesn't sound like an evolvement from the same world the other Age of Wonders took place on. It looks a lot more like some paralel world. AoW does take place in a multiverse.

Yes, but that multiverse has that vague, mostly unexplained, plot about the war between the Archons and the Shadow Demons going on. Would be interesting to see if there will be any mention of that... Plus at least Humans, Archons and Elves do operate on a multiverse scale rather than being bound to the "standard" AoW world.

To explain further after looking it up again:
The Archons and the Shadow Demons (or just "Demons in the original AoW) wage war over the fate of the multiverse, battling each other across countless of "worlds".
Once the Archons conquer a world from the shadow demons, or discover a new one, they send the Elves there.
The Elves, using their natural affinity for life energies create a biosphere for the world and usher in a "Age of Wonders" when magic reigns.
Once the work of the Elves is finished and they got to enjoy the world for a bit, the Archons seed humans there. At this point the Elves are supposed to gradually leave.
Humans are the larval form of Archons and need to be protected until some vaguely messianic stuff happens that unlocks the path to ascension into proper Archons for them.
The Humans become more Archon soldiers for the multiversial war against the demons.
Rinse and repeat.

The plot of the normal Age of Wonders Trilogy (+Shadow Magic) pretty much happened because the Elf King of that world (Innioch) refused to leave when the Archons asked him to and by the time of AoW III that world is cut off from the Multiverse, making them theoretically safe from the Shadow Demons (until the end of the DLC campaign) but leading to all sorts of nasty circumstances when it comes to the Afterlife (the zombified Archons in AoW 3)

It's all about brand recognition ala sales.I doubt there will much lore crossover.

I think that there will be a solid connection. Personally, I hope it will be the inclusion of the Syrons as a race and possibly the Shadow Demons.
Additionally, I would not be opposed to seeing the traditional races make an appearance. Space-Goblins sound good to me! But I guess this is going to be up to the modding community.

As long as there are "Wonders" (ie magical/enchanting stuff) in the game, it should be worthy of the name "Age of Wonders".

Hmm, that was not supposed to sound skeptical.

I hope there will be a tie-in or at least some connection to the previous games other than some mechanics. Magic in space opens up quite cool synergy opportunities and options (much more than just mana-powered production plants). Time to be creative.

Kind of a pity. Personally what I liked about the Age of Wonders series wasn't so much the gameplay as the ongoing plot and the (always barely hinted at) metaplot. That's also why Age of Wonders III kinda disappointed me, the Campaign (the story) was way too short and seemed little more than a tutorial for the Multiplayer.

I'm currently replaying the original Age of Wonders on Steam to see whether the campaign only seemed so long because I was a little kid when I played it but...no...the campaign is very long in comparison to AoW III, and very well done, especially considering the age of the game.

That's a shame, it would of been great to have the games with subtle connections or history that relates to the true Age of Wonders series. Now it just sounds like Paradox has turned Age of Wonders into a branding, so that you know what flavour of gameplay you get, rather than a coherent story series.

I guess we'll see what Age of Stellaris offers in the future, but so far it looks pretty fun. I hope we at least get references/dire penguins/space archons.

On the other hand, it could be that the team *wants* to do a sci-fi game for a change and the AoW branding helps understand who is making it + marketing. After PF they might get to do AoW5 (I assume AoW:pF is AoW4, not AoW3.5, might be wrong there).

The numbering gets confusing. Let's not forget AoW:SM was also numberless, though sort of a sequel.

Is "flavour of gameplay" not a good reason to give a title the "Age of Wonders" label? Even the most superficial of glances at what's been released about the game will show you that this is a different setting entirely, it's not as if they are trying to trick fans of the old fantasy setting into buying this game. It's not named "Age of Wonders 4 either". Still, everything known about this game so far breathes "Age of Wonders".

On a story level the "Age of Wonders" label will likely make a lot of sense too: the setting seems to be about this "wondrous" galaxy-spanning civilisation called the Star Union. Lots of the game will center around the playable factions rediscovering that old age of wonders.

I see no problem here at all.

Every prior "Age of Wonders" game has been directly linked in some way, which makes sense as "Age of Wonders" isn't a genre, but a game series with a coherent story. If Planetfall isn't related to Age of Wonders, then why give it the name? Just call it Planetfall -- The fact it's a Triumph game and the fact it looks to have a similar feel to AoW 3 would tell anyone that it's that style of game. Age of Wonders isn't a genre but a series with a story.
