So I just recently bought the byzantine DLC and am about to attempt to restore the Roman Empire, but it seems like an impossible task. To conquer the Muslim world and take Italy from the Holy Roman Empire simply does not seem feasible. Has anyone here accomplished that without cheating? Could you offer any advice?

Its no so hard at its seems, in my first atempt I made it in just 100 years and without beign it the main objective of the game... Use holy war against the muslims and syria, egypt and tunis would be easy to conquer. Meanwile use claims to gain cb against venice, genoa and the pope, small states with no allies and easy to take. You can take the lands of siciy and naples using the de jure claims of the empire, and then it would only leave the duchy of ferrara. In my game i conquered it by looking for a pretender, giving him a county and then pressing its claim. Beating the HRE it's not hard if you act quickly, taking as much land as you cand in the lles possible time. And if their armies appear, use catafracts in mass from the retinues, nothing can stop them :p

Easy to conquer? I have trouble simply holding onto turkey with the slew of holy wars and invasions thrown at me by the Seljuks and the Fatimids. I must be doing something wrong. Early in the game do you upgrade your buildings to increase your levy sizes like me? Or simply pour all your cash into retinues?

I did it as a dutch duke, without even using the imperial reconquest cb
It went like this: duke of flanders --> king of jerusalem --> byzantine emperor --> get claim on france and HRE through marriage --> go heretic and holy war the rest of the land you want

That's Byzantine Empire for you. The middle ages were pretty much a rollercoaster from one defeat to another for them. The Empire was long past its zenith by 1100 and couldn't really stand against its many enemies.

Waiting until Italy goes independent and abusing your retinues. Restoring the Roman Empire isn't meant to be done in one or two generations, but it is definitely doable over the long haul (enough provinces go indepndent to make the easy pickings).

Playing my first game as the Byz right now, once I got over the first attack by Seljuks which was a bit touch and go, I took Dwin to the E/NE without much bother, then went for Jerusalem.

Might be a little bit cheatsy but I loaded up my ships with half my army, sent the other half to take low 'Supply Limit' provinces on the coast, and once the big enemy stack came to take back said provinces ( losing their troops to attrition ) I'd land my other army to retake any territory lost, quickly and easily because of low garrisons :) rinse and repeat if needed, not long before they are cut down to size. Then lure with one half on the coast, land the other as battle begins, then roll them over :)

Good luck mate
