  • Europa Universalis IV
I started out on newbie island with the goal of easing myself back into CKII and trying out some mechanics that I hadn't touched before. One of those was the antipope. As the emperor of Britannia I made a prince-archbishop into an antipope:

As you can see, he likes me all right (it's been up in the eighties without affecting the issue). He's also pretty popular among the bishops and is making fat stacks of ducats:

So far, so good... but he's also not paying me anything:

I thought the antipope was supposed to pass along half of what he collected to his liege. Am I misinformed? Is there a setting somewhere?

Spamming excommunications is sweet, too, but I'd also like to get all the money I can.

Probably has something to do with your church tax/obligations laws, though honestly if you've already got yourself an antipope you should press his claim to the actual Papacy. Then you can get a cut of almost every Catholic bishop's taxes, which will make you fabulously wealthy to say the least.

I haven't touched church taxes and I do get money from the bishops who like me best. I'm a little concerned that if I'm not getting paid by the antipope I also won't get paid by the pope. I've also got enough heat right now that it won't be practical to go after the Papacy for a while.

I mostly want to understand how the mechanic works.

I just checked the Wiki at http://www.ckiiwiki.com/Antipope and this seems to be the answer:

"Every bishop that prefers the antipope over the proper pope and their liege will pay their taxes to the antipope. (Where the pope gets 10% of taxes, an antipope's controller only gets 5%.)"

That quote seems to imply that the antipope will pass on half of what he collects to his controller. Per my initial screenshot, he's actually passing on zero. I can't tell if I've done something weird or if the wiki is out of date.

Check your personal title finance screen; it's possible that the wiki means that the bishops pay half their taxes to the antipope and half directly to you rather than all to the antipope who then pays you.

Sadly I'm only getting paid by my son that I shuffled off to the church instead of landing:

So the antipope is collecting 36 a year in church taxes and I'm getting a lousy 6. He'll give me money if I ask for it but that burns piety. I thought one of the benefits of getting an antipope was the money.

For those curious, the city tax is from my three mayoral vassals with no contribution from the antipope.
