I really like the current direction of the game, personally. The absolutism mechanics are a lot of fun.

Felt the same as you, only got back into it recently, and my word the game is great again. Harder than what it was originally, but challenging and still fun to play.
Vassalized by Mamlukes and forced to convert via subject interaction. Happens basically every game.
Oftentimes they end up getting their independence back (e.g. Ottos supporting them while they are disloyal due to enforced religion) before Mamlukes can integrate them and we end up with Sunni Cyprus.
