Alright, was playing EU2 the other day, as might be expected from someone on these forums ;) and had been having a grand time annexing Italy and Byzantium via diplomacy as my personal EU2 favorite, Venice.

The idea then came to me that annexing a nation by diplomacy is adding that nation to your own, bringing them into the fold, so to speak, as equals with everyone else already in your nation.

with that in mind, I think it would make sense for all the claimed territories that a Diplo annexed nation has go to the nation that diplo annexed it. Or at the very least, have (and we'll use my Venice as the example) Venice gain cores on all the territories owned by Byzantium, or Milan, or Helvetia for instance. because those territories have just been brought into your little empire a full, and equal part of it. Therefore it would make sense to do so. :)

This is a good idea. Doubt Pdox will put it in now, but here's hoping they've thought of it too.

Another idea would be to have cultural conversions to go along with religious conversions. Then maybe once a province has been converted both ways, and nationalism has died down, you get a core on that territory.

Regardless, I'd like to be able to gain cores and gain/convert cultures somehow. Stuff like that historically happened, after all (in the game terms).

Well you would have to rebalance the game then as by jsut doign as yo usaid that would make human unstobable pretty fast and make the player lose interest in game.
Maybe something like integration or something like that. For example you conquer a province, it has same religion but different culture and it isn't your core. after let say 50 year the population will begin to assimilate into your culture and after a while they will become same culture as you and it will be added as core? This would work better if something like Vicky's pop system is added into EUIII

your right. they considered it part of the United Kingdom, or perhaps the British empire ;)

yeh, but they were consolidating their hold on ireland for centuries ... right up until the irish decided they'd had enough  ... seriously though, i don't think they ever had enough grip on ireland to consider it a core

Diplo-annexations should be much more rare. This sort of thing didn't happen very often in history. Perhaps limit Diploannexation to countries with the same primary culture? But I do agree that a succesful diploannexation should give cores on the province. Those cores should be lost if that country ever declares itself independant again.

you'd get to keep them (the claims), of course.

You should lose them if you don't hold the province for 50 years (perhaps longer?)

Bad idea, IMO, makes the game far to easy. Immagine the amount of cores you would get for DA'ing Austria or the Ottoman Empire.

easier? perhaps, but this is a raw idea for the time being, and given time and thought, it could probably be balenced out. However, my own point of view isnt very concerned with how easy it might make the game, but rather how realisitic it would be. And one cant really aregue, bringing a nationa peacefully under your banner tends to mean you view them just as much a part of your nation as any other, older part of it is.

It does make logical sense. Either that or you get the country cultures of the country involved depending on the size of the country annexed, eg. if you diplo-annex spain, you should get spanish, since they should become equals in your new joint-country.

But if something like this does make it to the game, it should be ridiculously difficult to to DAs for any country that's moderately sized or larger. Maybe base the difficulty on the relative sizes of the two countries?

I don't think this is a good idea, and it is not logical at all. Having diplomatic hegemony over a nation to the point of being able to annex them peacefully does not mean they will be treated equally. For example, if the Venetian doge gave thousands of gifts to the Byzantine emperor, thus coopting him, that does not give him a legal claim to his lands, EVEN IF he accepts to be annexed.
