Alright, was playing EU2 the other day, as might be expected from someone on these forums
and had been having a grand time annexing Italy and Byzantium via diplomacy as my personal EU2 favorite, Venice.
The idea then came to me that annexing a nation by diplomacy is adding that nation to your own, bringing them into the fold, so to speak, as equals with everyone else already in your nation.
with that in mind, I think it would make sense for all the claimed territories that a Diplo annexed nation has go to the nation that diplo annexed it. Or at the very least, have (and we'll use my Venice as the example) Venice gain cores on all the territories owned by Byzantium, or Milan, or Helvetia for instance. because those territories have just been brought into your little empire a full, and equal part of it. Therefore it would make sense to do so.
