With thousands of buses and trams out in the city, they have a number of breakages every day. You only need to be unlucky enough. :)

I don't know how often 1920 buses broke, I trust devs did some research on that not just made up the number.

Does that happen:confused: I have been going to school and work by bus for four years and never seen one breaking down.

I've been driving buses for two and a half years; I've broken down perhaps half a dozen times. This week, in fact - I stopped for the timetable for five minutes, turned off the engine - forgot to turn off half of the interior lights - and the battery got too flat to start the engine. What happened would be familiar to CiM players - most of the passengers completed their journeys on foot with angry red faces. A couple waited for an hour for the next bus. One hour fifteen minutes later, a technician appeared with a jump-starting kit, I gave him the unpalatable chips (fries) I'd just got from the chippie across the road from my dead bus, he got the bus going, I drove it home out-of-service.

A few months back, this time not my fault, was at the bus stop at a train station when another bus drove past me (something they can't do in CiM - yet) and the driver stopped and warned me there was a bunch of stuff hanging out of the engine bay. Turned out to be the shredded remains of the fan belt. Took an hour or two for the techie to appear and select an appropriate fan belt from what was in his van.

Possibly, if my wonderful employers would hire a few more technicians and keep more types of fan belt in stock at the depot and replace the batteries before they get old and knackered and, in general, stop sending us more clapped-out thirteen-year-old buses to replace our clapped-out fifteen-year-old buses instead of getting us some new ones, we could provide a more reliable service...

You lucky bastard ;) I've used Stockholm's public transport for many years, one that is not underfunded and actually runs very well except in winters, and I have encountered many a breakdown. I have also experienced train breakdowns

I've never had a problem, but then again I live in Southern California, where it's basically never cold or wet, so the buses get less rusted, the engines turn over more easily, etc.

as a side note, for dozer: we've still got a few (3, according to wikipedia) 15-year-old buses in the fleet (Gillig Phantom 40' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillig_Phantom http://rmcconnell.com/transport/ca/glendale/B63.jpg ), but most of the rest are about 10 years old (New Flyer C35LF http://rmcconnell.com/transport/ca/glendale/B46.jpg ). We even got some fancy new ones ( New Flyer C40LFR http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/images/d/d3/Glendale_Beeline_B74.JPG ), the seats of which were promptly torn up by idiots.

speaking to the drivers, the 15-year-old Gillig Phantoms are actually prefered to the NFI C35s.

You lucky bastard ;)

Perhaps I was back then....... The type of bus I have fond memories of was the DAF MB200/Den Oudsten; red leather seats and the bus had a superb hydropneumatic-suspension like a Citroen DS. Nowadays I never use busses anymore and haven't used public transport for some 7 years until a few weeks ago. A few snowflakes fell and all of a sudden the entire public-transport system broke down. Missed two job-interviews because of it....

Some more posts on my Berlin network and the editor will be comming soon btw. ;)

Not here in the alps...it's just a question of how much the bus and car drivers are used to drive in snow. [utopic] Oh, a new idea for CiM! Weather! And it depends on the money we give the drivers how they can cope with snow/rain etc.[/utopic]

Anyway, back to topic:
Could you show as a video of the map editor? Would be quite interesting to see how much details can be introduced to the game by the editor.

That's the plan if I can find the time to make it ;)

What a min, why is a military general in charge of public transportation? And why does he give "briefings"

?

A tour of the Map Editor

The first vid gives you a short tour of the Map Editor, and the city I am currently building. I set out creating the river at the bottom of the map, creating the first bits of the moat and the central 'harbour'. The cliffs can be obscured by concrete walls to give the feel of a harbour. Build your city bit by bit, and don't go for the largest map straight away as it is really humongous. At this time I had no idea how to "decorate" the buildings with advertisements, graffiti and neon-signs, there are lots of each and with these, other signs, dustbins, generators etc. every building can be unique. The manual quickly pointed out the neon-signs have to be lowered and raise with the page-down and page-up buttons until they are just where you want them.

Keep in mind, everything you see had to be plopped, there's no zoning like in SC4. The only thing which will be automatic are the cars and people which will eventually walk around.

In the second vid I focus on terrain, there are just a few options but with those you can give it any contour and height you like. Add a bit of water for a lake or river. Leveling the terrain will make the land dry again.
My hill shaped as I want and a little pond in front I put some trees onto it and add some farm-fields and a useless bit of pavement.
As you can see at 1:18 and at the end of the vid I had no idea yet how to create a field of rocks and a group of trees. Very simple, just keep pressing or hold the mouse-button to have it exactly as you like it. Turning the trees and rocks (RMB) give the terrain a lot of variety.

Vid 3 goes into detail on everything ploppable: buildings, neon-signs, street-side stuff, decals etc.; the CiM Map-Editor is a powerful tool although building a city takes a lot of time due to the high level of detail.

As do I these days. The only troubles I've faced with MTS (San Diego) was the floodings we had in the second half of December. I've never experienced a breakdown of either a bus or a trolley since moving here :)

About the vehicle breakdown, we have done some balancing regarding the matter.

Excellent post about the map editor Singleton Mosby! Couldn't have shown it better myself ;)

It will be possible to build roads in mountain terrain?

It is possible, yes. But it will take some time to get used to as it is not as simple as putting the mountain in place and plopping the road where you want it. If that's what you do you'll get a road sitting on a huge embankment (see pic below).

xp3h34.jpg

If you instead create the top of the mountain first, then have the road running to where you want it (it slopes very gradualy), you can then create the mountain around it just as you want it and have the buses and trams run to the top.
It is a counterintuitive method but it works. Same applies for above-ground and elevated metro-lines btw.
