Chapter 62: Thousand Year Reich

The War in America as other wars in America often did, turned into a bloody affair. The difficulty for the Empire and Empress Octavia was ultimately deciding who to support. The Americans were the aggressor in this situation but also were relatively stable, the Mexicans were the defender but were widely unpredictable especially for the Empire's states.

The Empress rather than intervene directly this time left matters in the hands of the Californian government who alongside the Dominion of Canada sided almost immediately with the Americans and asked for permission to Join the War with their colonial militias. Together with the Americans the Californians and Canadians mobilized across into Templar and Mexican Territory at a staggering rate.

​

In Europe the Axis was taking yet another bite of Russia, This time for more greek speaking territory in the Samara and Crimea in hopes of taking full advantage of the Soviet Crisis in leadership. The Wu and Celtic Empires however were less than thrilled as the Focus was supposed to shift to the Holy Roman Empire, who had remained belligerent when the Soviets and Indians had already folded. The War was now becoming a major distraction away from the rumored invasions of Korea and the Indian Subcontinent. The Invasion would ultimately be Halted rather quickly due to Wu's complete refusal to redeploy in the North and the Swift end of the soviet power struggle by Joseph Stalin.

Joseph Stalin had spent his time as a member of the Russian Triumphant being the enforcement arm of the Communist party and of Lenin's ideals. Upon the Death of Lenin Trotsky was away meeting with representatives in Scandinavia while Stalin was closer but also away overseeing the Integration of Western Poland. 1924 and 1925 had quickly become known as 'The Quiet Civil War' as Supporters for each remaining head arrested, assassinated or discredited each up up until Leon Trosky's assassination by gunshot in late 1925. With no opposition left and the Country in Crisis Stalin had risen from a quiet enforcer to the General Secretary of the Party and mobilized the country to fight back, and the resulting 'Red Spring' of 1926 saw an end to the Axis advance and Armistice that would eventually evolve into a white peace. With two victories under his belt, it was now Stalin's turn to steer the Soviet machine in any direction he pleased.

In America Mexico and the Knight's Transient were utterly crushed. Baja was ceded to California, The Mexican State was split into two halves, the Provisional Republic of Navajo and the Remaining State of Mexico. The Republic of Navajo would exist under Americans and Holy Roman Supervision until it's Oil and Gold Reserves would pay the debts Mexico had accrued with the United States and then be returned to the Mexican Government. The Axis and Socialist blocs both labels the treaty of Saint Francis to be blatant capitalist thievery but of course Nothing was done.

A Year later in 1927 the International Olympic Committee deemed things stable enough to host the Ninth Olympic games in coming 1928. A Historic Year the world over as a Thousand Years ago in 928 Kaiser Mathias Anniona was Crowned the First Holy Roman Emperor, marking the rebirth of the Western Roman Empire and the end of the Dark Ages.​

The Games were decided to be held in Rome, and come 1928 the Millennial Celebration also was declared to be held in Italy as well as Vienna. Empress Octavia herself presided the opening ceremony in splendor that would fit only for the Holy Roman Empire. The Empress' speech would later find itself into Newspaper's and Radio readings the world over.

As Expected the 1928 Olympics belonged to Austria and Austria alone. Between Italy, Germany and Austria as well as the greater Commonwealth the Empire handily won the Lion's share of Medals and for once the Axis did not grumble about cheating and foul play for there was a much larger fire starting within their own ranks.

Following a recent stroke a year ago Richard Mathrafel did not run for reelection in 1928. The Socialists and Liberals of course saw chance to regain control of the government and were swiftly disappointed as the Mathrafal Endorsement of his right hand man Édouard Moseley quickly ensured an easy Fascist victory for both the Executive and legislative branches of government. To better appeal to Britons and Scots, Moseley changed the spelling of his name to Edward and dropped an E from his last name.

Worrying for other members of the Axis however was Mosley's rhetoric about a singular Celtic Empire, separate from the Chinese and Greeks, stating multiple times that "Fascism is not for Export' and that the other members of the Axis should have done away with the unreliable and frivolous nobility instead of Embracing it like the Byzantines had.​

While Mathrafal put foreign Policy and the expansion of the Celtic State first mosley instead focused on the domestic and strengthening his ties with traditional Celtic Allies, the North Germans and Iberians. Mosley would also apply his philosophy to the people of the Empire as well stating that:

'There are some (Groups) that are unclean, undesirable, They refuse to adopt the civility of our system, that cling to the old way, the old culture, the perverted and twisted fantasy that Liberal and Socialists have instilled in their mind, These people seek to corrupt and devour our society like parasites, and like any parasite they must be dug out and removed"

Needless to say any premise of free and fair elections with the Celtic 'Federation' was dropped, Socialist and Liberal leaning parties were banned. In the following days known as 'The Three Axes' the members of said parties were rounded up, arrested and some would be executed. From now on Totalitarianism would be the rule of Law in the Breton Federation, and in Spain and Portugal similar systems would fall into place.

With the end of the Great Depression came a realization that the Holy Roman Empire, due to a majority of factors had survived the Ordeal relatively intact. The Chinese on the other hand had an economy also in recovery but also vast tracts of Mongol and Southeast Asian Land to administer and properly 'civilize'. China of course had twice the Holy Roman Population, Outside of Principle President Liao had no reason not to try and propose a 'Deal with the Devil' involving playing ball for the next few years while Chinese Military technology as well as the Chinese economy grew to such an extent that it could overtake the Holy Romans without firing a shot.

Stalin had similar ideas in Mind, to buy protection for the next few years against the Axis while he purged dissenters as well as his own armed forces of those he felt were conspiring against him. For the Empress however these deals would be all to timely for her own interests.

Part of Octavia's ambition in a return to Roman Style and roots meant something drastic. It had been well over a century since Napoleon Bonaparte burned Vienna and since that day the Empire had been waging a war against its own people sometimes more than foreign powers. Following the Resignation of Chancellor Freud the Empress announced that the Old System of Willhelm would be done away with entirely, the Reichsrat and Imperial Council reorganized and an official return to proper Roman Governance undergone.

The new Octavian System as it was quickly being called was quite simple.

The Senate would officially return, With each Province of the Empire having one appointed by the Monarchy and one elect. Members of the Senate would handle the day to day governing of the Empire and laws written in the Senate would need to be approved by the Emperor to pass into law.

Members of the Greater Empire, renamed the 'Imperial Dominions' would also have equal representation in the Senate, and be allowed to hold Free elections as they wished, though the Head of State would always remain the Emperor.

The Reichsrat would remain and be reorganized entirely into a 'Lower House' as it was originally designed. It would have powers to write laws to be sent to the Senate.

The Imperial Council would remain powerless but restrictions on birth would be officially removed. The Kingdom of Italy, Occitania, Serbia, Wallachia, Bavaria, Germany and Archduke of Austria would all have permanent places on the Council to advise the Emperor/Empress.

The Throne would retain all previous powers and be allowed to suspend elections indefinitely in times of War and Crisis.

In Short, the Monarchy going into the 20th Century would remain Absolute, but now the people could properly vote and participate in government, a favorable alternative to rioting, revolution and death at the hands of the Imperial Military. War WAS coming, The Chinese and Celts could not wait forever, but Octavia had now taken enough action to settle matters at home. If the Empire's hold on the world would be threatened in the coming decades it would be foreign, not domestic.

And When that Threat finally comes. The Holy Roman Empire would Stand Firm and the Annionia's of Austria would stand with alongside her, with Imperial Hearts.

So it came a bit abrupt but from 1929 on basically nothing happened into the 30's except that Russia reclaimed some cores via Crisis (Apparently that can happen despite Russia being a GP *shrug*) So I'll use the Gap as an excuse to explain how the borders got shuffled around, and Yes, Converter is a Go, I'm working on it now and I'm very impressed, Should have the thread up and linked soon as well as the Final World Update.

A nice ending to this stage of the megacampaign and a good preview of the mass slaughtering of millions of innocent livestroubles ahead. Hopefully the Annionas will get through them, because I really want to see them fight space dragons and alien versions of the Annionas.

I think I asked this before, but are you considering trying a total conversion to the New World Order mod so that you can take the Annionas through the Cold War and the 21st century? Or will you just write an epilogue covering that whole period and skip to Stellaris?

We will open up the final world update with America. America has come a Long way from being the Divided and Feuding gang of Children it started, and it has changed dramatically. The United States and Knight's Transient Eviscerated the Kingdom of New Anglia before it could properly turn it's colonial holding on the mainland into states then turned on Mexico and Canada respectively for more land.

With the United States having grown powerful due to immigration the Holy Roman Empire and the Americans found themselves to be unlikely bedfellows in keeping order in the New World which gives us the Borders we have today. Canada will be given it's freedom in 6 years and Louisiana and Navajo will go back to their respective countries I should point out.

Demographically America is massive and I mean MASSIVE. Georgia has a population of over 10 Million people for example and Florida, Louisiana(The State) and the Carolina's aren't very far behind. America is also one of the few 'true' democracies in the world and in 1930 they are celebrating the victory of their first Social Democrat candidate.

California is also enjoying a Democratic renaissance due to being given full Dominion status and had also begun soaking up immigrants and rapidly industrializing up until the End of the Game. They are no United States but have access to large amounts of Gold, Oil and other valuable resources that are absolutely vital to the survival of the empire.

The Caribbean has been left very much the same, Notably Mexico has seized New Spain from th e Spanish and the Holy Roman Empire has built the Panama canal, later expanding the territory to include all of Panama upon the rise of Sudamerika.

​

In Asia we have the one, the only Big Bad Chinese Union State. Beaten down and partitioned they rose from the Ashes of Civil War and Great War sanctions to become the hegemony of the Asian continent rivaled only by India to the South. The Chinese Union State house the largest population in the world, the second largest industry and the largest military in the world, and its been waiting for an opportunity to finally turn it on the Holy Roman Empire and her allies a second time.

The Holy Roman Empire has continued to be a constant pain the Chinese Union State's side even before the Great War, maintaining control of the South China sea, Taiwan, Port Arthur and the Philipines alongside the Dominions of Korea Manchuria and Japan.

Malaysia which begun the century with the Potential to be a powerful naval Empire collapsed under pressure from the Chinese and now sits as a rump state with control of only it's traditional homelands. Australia as well has sat relatively isolated from the world in the past Century and has remained a quiet isle of democracy in a turbulent sea.

Next up is the Empire of India. Also formed after a rather violent revolution the Indian Empire has managed to seize much of Persia as well as the Horn of Africa from the Byzantine Empire as well as challenge the Chinese for control of Asia. The Indians are highly democratic but have spent the last decade being dominated by Anti War and Pacifist Liberal and Socialist Parties that have cut military spending significantly and have left the Great Empire of the subcontinent weak and exposed without protection from her traditional ally, Russia.​

Moving further West we reach the Eastern Roman 'Republic'. Though don't let the name fool you, the Old Empire may be dead but the new Republic is anything but. A member of the Axis with the Celts and Chinese the Greeks have been putting the squeeze on the Soviets lately. Though very recently the Soviets have finally managed to exploit internal divisions in the Axis to keep from being completly overrun its only a matter of Time before the Greeks turn on the soviets again, or perhaps turn south to reclaim their rightful territories in Arabia, Africa and the ever important Suez Canal.

Which brings us to North Africa. The Holy Roman Empire though influence or Colonization has taken control of the lion's share of Africa including Suez. The Cordoban Empire is now completly gone, devoured by the Fascist ambitions of Spain and Portugal and Mali the never conquered, never colonized African state has fallen under a Communist totalitarian regime and it's many peoples cultures and traditions are now finding themselves being erased and wiped out.

Not shown in this Update is South Africa for the same Reasons as South America. Both are controlled solely by one Power, the Holy Roman Empire and 'Sudamerika' respectively. Sudamerika has since we've last seen it dropped all premise of Democracy and started rapidly militarizing and industrializing. The Great Rainforests of Brazil die a quiet death as the Isolated Fascist state works towards it's own agenda in secret.

Coming home we have Europe. The Celtic Empire, now the "Breton Federation" has returned and united Western Europe through military arms or diplomacy against the Holy Roman Empire. The powerful minor states of Flanders and Scotland have died and been trampled under the fascist Bretons, Britons and French.
​

Westphalia has been broken and transformed into the North German Federation which now continues to feud with the Socialist and Russian Ally of Scandinavia for control of Northern Europe. Spain and Portugal have seen themselves collapse only to be reborn again under Nationalist regimes. Russia (Which is hard to see) has fallen to the Communists and sits ever ominously in the East, rebuilding, waiting and preparing for the War to End all wars.

And surrounded by it all is the Holy Roman Empire. Shaken by revolution, War and challengers of all forms. While the other Monarchies of Europe have all fallen, died or been subverted House Anniona has remained and struggled for a century to keep the World from spiralling out of hand. In that they have failed, The Russians, Celts and Greeks have all succumbed to Radicalism.

The North Germans and Saxons, bitter at Kaiser Ferdinand's refusal for reunification have turned to the darker side of populism and revolution and the various ideological factions within the Empire itself have risen up several times in hopes to have their voices heard. The Italians, Czechs and Austrians however had remained, and with the Empire Empire has survived and now looks to the future, For Hope. For the new Octavian Democratic reforms, and for the World at large.

Population Wise, no surprise here, Wu wins. They were always going to win the converter practically ensured it. In Hindsight I should have took some more time with the converter since becuase of GP china and GP India (Even When Split) it became nigh impossible for minors to industrialize. Notably however WW1 actually helped the world economy out quite a bit (At the cost of all the GP's) as less factories in Wu and rising employment in all the great powers opened the door for Argentina to industrialize like crazy and soak up loads more immigrants than either had any right to. You'll also not army sizes, This is why WW2 never started in Vicky, becuase I mean really I have the Celts, Russians and Greeks combined outnumbered. Factor in the Dominions and I've got the Chinese Union State outnumbered as well.

Here's what the World Economic situation looks like for those interested. As many people are are more savvy at Vicky will notice the world Economy is teetering around collapse thanks to China's return. The massive imports of Grain are actually from my humongous liquor industry which I pretty much have a monopoly on. Theres also a nice comfortable surplus of steel coming out of Austria thanks to all the coal I control which i've enjoyed for most of the game.

On the Social Front for Austria were sitting with a final division of 25% Fascist 23% Socialist 26% Liberal and other Parties making up the remainder. Due to how the Upper house is Chosen however representation almost perfectly matches Popular Ideology which had kept Social and Liberal reforms going the entire game (You'll not e after the Freudian reforms Healthcare, Education, Minimum Wage and Pensions have increased). The People of the Empire also have rights to free speech, assembly and unions, and have despite it all not stopped revolting becuase they want suffrage, babies I say.

Don't have the screenshot but their taxes are also fairly low as well so outside of Artisans and a few other bad pop types(Looking at you aristocrats) and certain cases everyone's getting everyday needs or better so somehow house Anniona through some miracle has managed a return of Enlightened Despotism into the Industrial age and all it took was a little extra incest and the blood of two completly unrelated sun gods, I'm sure Plato would be proud, or horrified.

Demographically The Empire has changed quite a bit. There are more Craftsmen in Austria than farmers! Hooray for industrialization. Everyone is still Catholic, though their politics vary wildly. About 40% of people want to vote, there were more but the rise of Fascism had pushed the number down from 60%. Also Revolutions, lots of dead suffragist scum.

Ethnically the Empire's shifted (Japan leaving for it's own Dominion is of course a dramatic shift in its own) 40% of the Empire is now 'Austrian'. I didn't take a screenshot of it, but Italy is sort of.. broken culturally with large German Enclaves across the Peninsula which is odd becuase Italian (Both types) are accepted. Could be due to immigration since there are loads of Italians in California, Alaska, Kamchatka and Africa. The other cultures have all been sort of regionalized, with South German having basically eaten over most of the Central and Southern Empire. Greeks for Example started out in some numbers in the Southern Border and Sicily and have now become almost nonexistent.

Here we have the World Rankings. The Holy Roman Empire is #1, Killing Wu's industry gave the empire a huge kick industrially. I still havent figured out why the prestige is so high, I'm guessing Crisis offers mixed with technology mixed with vanilla events. We have the largest Military and Navy in the world as far as actual power is concerned, the strongest industry and of course even if I took away half of the Empire's prestige we'd still be #1.

Wu and India just traded places for #2 and I can see why, Look at India's military score. 100 Mil power for a state technically descended from the Teutonic order, I have no words.

Things look a bit more typical down the line except surprise, Sudamerika is actually the big dog in America now. Since the US decided to elect some pansy pacifist socialists. Also, California and Japan are literally the 9 and 10 spots which I find pretty funny. The Other GP's are all fairly close in score which is a welcome change from how the world looked post WW1.

Here's how the world Looks at the end of 100 Years. House Anniona has survived the Crucible of War and Revolution that was the Victorian Era and for better or worse have steered the Absolutist Austrian Empire into leading the Free world against the forces of Tyranny and Radicalism. But the true struggle is not yet over, for House Anniona's Enemies are many in number and only growing in strength. For the Empire to sustain her people will need to fight for their future, not just with Strength and Honor.

But with Imperial Hearts

Were Done!, So Checklist of our Goals.

1. Be Number 1 at the end.
Done and Done, It was fairly difficult early on to keep the spot (Massive shipbuilding Campaigns I love you) but once the Great War fired it was pretty much a sealed deal at that point, the AI just doesn't know how to conduct War across Eurasia very well.
2. Keep the Anniona's on the Throne, Which means not letting any Rebels succeed.
Done, though against it was touch and go at some point, Vienna was saved and Jacobin's Communists and Fascists alike couldn't take the Capital long enough to enforce demands.
3. Stay as an Absolute Monarchy as long as humanly possible.
Done, We did it to the End. No voting in Austria, After all the Divine God Emperor/Empress knows whats best for all.
4. Reclaim through Sphering or Conquest Austria's south american colonies.
I did in fact 'catch em all' at some point having every single American Power in my Sphere but America and Argentina's revolving door GP status for the early half of the game pretty much assured I couldn't do much beyond that.
5. Form Germany if i lose Italy.
Didn't lose Italy so I didn't need to form Germany. I probably could have if I attacked the Soviets, Celts and North Germans one last time though.
6. Sphere Byzantium should they fall from Grace.
I missed the opportunity for this thanks to a Truce with them, If I had we very well might have been saying Goodbye to the Roman Empire not the Holy Roman Empire.

Also some closing thoughts on the American Core's mini mod.

Oh my goodness this Mod makes America so much more interesting in conversion games. Hell I'd recommend it for Vanilla just becuase South America in Vanilla never does anything. Normally American powers need to generate infamy to expand without cores and infamy hurts your rep with immigrants, so basically its almost never worth it to expand in America without cores (Hence why America gets them for Free in Vanilla instead of having to fight for them). It might not be the most 'realistic' but hey, Dynamic America is better than boring America.

Also some thoughts on the Conversion.
Giving Wu Vanilla Pop was perhaps a really bad Idea on my part. It crashed the game Economy from the Get Go, so nations like Mali and Malaysia got royally screwed. India, Myself Russia and China were literally the only nations gaining industry score well into the game to the point where I actually had to go into the save and manually buff the lower Gp's several times. For my next Megacampaign i'm just going to have to bite the bullet and manually even out development across the world to prevent my 'Italy gets 50% of the world population' problem from repeating.

I actually thought this through myself and it sort of makes sense. The Current Superpower of this Universe (Austria) has stood for over a thousand years and claims its legitimacy from Ancient Rome, which of course was a Republic before it was an empire (And Kingdom before that but.... ) Where as the Breton history (Which is where Fascism originates in this time line) Consists of being ruled by Rome, Then the Franks, then the Austrians and then finally themselves under an Austrian Royal House. So there's a lot of Incentive to 'make' history rather than pull from it.

Similarly the Eastern Roman Empire was Democratic and Free for centuries so for a Totalitarian State needs to undermine that history else they have no legitimacy. The Wu on the other Hand outside of the Asian comparison's I'd compare more to Japan, in that its not necessarily Fascist but highly Nationalistic and Militaristic, though with a fair amount of Revanchism thrown in to Unite the many Chinese peoples into one cohesive 'Union'.

Democracy then just sort of naturally falls into how it was revived in America "Democracy works!, Just look at the Classical Empires! and (For this Timeline) The Byzantine Empire and Austrian Free Cities".

I've been considering it, but I'm noticing with each Conversion the HRE tends to loose a bit more of it's character with each jump, I havent looked into the NWO mod very much, I probably should since I love Vicky so much, but Stellaris feels like it'd probably just be my Actual Holy Roman Empire in Space game except with the Much more satisfyingly unpronounceable Anniona surname. . I'll keep thinking about pushing past HOI but no promises.

Octavia is making sure she gets a place in the history books, and I love it. Ought to make for some fun in the next game.

The V2-HOI IV converter converts the HRE (Did not pass the voting reform in 1930, converted as Absolute monarchy) as the only major Democratic Government (Every other Democracy becomes 'liberal'). I'll take that to mean that Somehow the Absolutist Oppressive Austrian Empire is literally the last hope for Democracy on the planet, which is quite funny.

I've been considering it, but I'm noticing with each Conversion the HRE tends to loose a bit more of it's character with each jump, I havent looked into the NWO mod very much, I probably should since I love Vicky so much, but Stellaris feels like it'd probably just be my Actual Holy Roman Empire in Space game except with the Much more satisfyingly unpronounceable Anniona surname. . I'll keep thinking about pushing past HOI but no promises.

If you do consider New World Order, I'd be willing to help out with the conversion. I've written a small program that converts all cores and province ownerships from converted Victoria 2 to New World Order, though I would need to rewrite parts of it to make it user-friendly, more efficient, and more compatible with other saves (it currently only works for my own megacampaign save). But if you decide to skip to Stellaris then I would be fine with that.
