Chapter 37: At Home and Abroad
revoltedesboxers_0.jpg

(Artist's Depiction of the Defense of Chongjin one of the greatest successes in Austrian Military History)
The Holy Roman Empire was now at war, not on one continent but three. In Europe the Celtic Empire was still prepared to come to Denmark's aid against the Swedish but now were vastly outnumbered, outgunned and isolated without help from Russian or the Eastern Roman Empires.

In Asia the situation couldn't be more different, as all the greater powers of the region eventually would choose a side, based on the original Indian Border conflict. The Defenders would consist of Kossalla, Malaysia, Ceylon, Mongolia as well as several minor states such as Australia and Borneo. On Aggressor's side was the mighty Wu Empire of China and her many tributaries and the Raj of Kamarupa. In terms of raw, trained military power the Austrian Led alliance had a slight advantage in manpower and a near overwhelming advantage on the sea thanks to ever newer and more modern Steamer designs being built back in Europe and in Japan.

The Elderly Divine Emperor Wu Shen had devised a tactic with his top Generals to overwhelm Malaysia, Mongolia and Korea in the opening phase of the war. The Hope was, Malaysia and Mongolia would quickly concede and Austria would lose control of thier Korean, permanently and thus would be unable to make full use of her Navy to invade mainland china for fear of counterattack from the Numerically superior Chinese in either Kamchatka or by sea into Ainu and possibly the Japanese home Islands.

LdiWEXw.jpg

The Chinese strategy was widely successful in the opening months of the war, the Mongols and Malaysians quickly were overwhelmed by Wu Military in mainland asia. The Malaysians, rather than fight on the field evacuated the Northern Frontier Entirely, save Hainan where the Austrian fleet was expected to arrive soon.

At home a general mobilization order had been given, more as a safety precaution in case of a second disaster in Mongolia. Previous experiences in the Mongolian Steppe had taught the Wu patience, and the true value of their advantage in manpower. While superior numbers would not always win the day, new Railways, Food preservation and medicines that had been developed recently now looked to augment the army enough that the Wu could afford to fight a war of attrition should the Mongolians again refuse to surrender.

oCQQlRX.jpg

In Europe the Holy Roman Empire was seeing similar success under the command of General Friedrich Von Baden. Von Baden was not an especially interesting commander in any way, but had taken the time in the Interwar period to augment his command staff with multiple bright young officers schooled in more modern forms of warfare. After early success in the Rhineland Baden was given another fifty divisions from the Russian Border to end the war quickly and efficiently. The General plan for Austria being to win the war in Europe as fast as possible and thus allow more reinforcements to be safely brought into India to Assist the Kossalans.

noVZvbY.png

The First shots between the Holy Roman Empire and China would be in Korea. With such great successes being reported in Mongolia and Malaysia General Liu Ting was now prepared to enact the second phase of his plan and move into Austrian Territory proper. Acting on Intelligence gathered from Korean Nationalists Liu moved his army into the Korean port of Chongjin. What Liu found there were not the undefended and understaffed forts he was expected but nearly Sixty thousand men and other military staff, nearly twenty thousand more than Liu's own strike force. By the time Ting realized he had walked into a trap Thirty Thousand Chinese were dead, wounded or captured including the General himself. Word of the Battle and it's aftermath would spread by boat and rail through both Empires and in Austria where the Media was looking for stories to sell to the Austrian people, an embellished Defense of Northern Korea from the Chinese would be the first headline regarding the war since the declaration nearly half a year before.

3dwAvkZ.png
hqVLBTn.png

Of course this was mainly due to there being more important news in Europe, at least for the Austrian people. General Von Baden's wide success in the french heartland had now instigated a dogpiling effect. With the great powers of Eastern Europe still busy fighting eachother, Westphalia formally declared war and mobilized its own armies. Not long after the Westphalian declaration, the Celtic Empire, sued for peace and began actively trying to rebuild in time to resist yet another invading force.

5RGpMey.png

With the war over Sweden now held official control over Oslo an Important center for Pan Scandinavian and Pan Germanic movements. The Later of course the Swedish quickly set about disbanding as well as arresting several leaders. For many within the city and the surrounding area's the Swedish had proven just to be another occupier, despite their claims to the region.

JqNyTM4.jpg

With the French surrender Kaiser Friedrich could now afford to deploy an expeditionary force to India where the war was now going from bad to worse. Fifty Divisions under the Command of Field Marshall Theodor d'Aspre Von Hoobreuk were sent to reinforce Goa but both the Chinese and Austrian Military commands knew that it was too little to late, India was going to fall, and Soon it would be Austria against both the Wu and half of India.

W9cbkSV.png

Naturally the Holy Roman response was a bold move. Inspired by their victory in Korea, Mixed Korean-Japanese colonial armies moved into Northeastern China. At Tangshan the Japanese defeated a numerically superior and better equipped army sent to stop the Austrian advance. Once again the Chinese were utterly slaughtered and sent back south. Chinese Armies still remained in Mongolia, Beijing and Northern China and with Korea exposed the Tangshan expedition could very well be surrounded.

old_summer_palace.jpg

(Burning of the Emperor's Summer Palace at Beijing)

Eventually it was decided that despite crushing victories there would be no hope in swiftly ending the war with just one attack into Northeastern China. The expedition retreated, destroying Rail Lines, dismantling factories and burning entire cities in an effort to give the Chinese pause before they struck Korea again in force. Even the Summer Palace of Emperor Wu Shen near Bejing wasn't spared the torch, marking a bloody turn for warfare in Asia. The War in Asia, was now only getting started.

As expected, the war against the Celtic Empire was child's play for the Holy Roman Empire. Westphalia deciding to take advantage of the situation suits them, going by their past. The poor French can't catch a break.

The war with Wu is going rather well so far. If things keep up, the world will have no doubt who is the strongest nation.

Chapter 37: The Red Winter
xMHQ_Carpathian_960x640.jpg.pagespeed.ic.-gFvh_TV6i.jpg

(Artist's Depiction of the Kamchatka Campaign that dominated the second half of the Imperial-Chinese War)
Theodor d'Aspre Von Hoobreuk's retreat from India would be remembered as one of the Bloodiest military campaigns in history. Combined Wu and Kamruptan Forces under command of the Elderly General Deng Zhao and his son Kwong Zhao had fully surrounded Hoobreuk's army and had begun to scorch the earth in hopes of Starving the Austrian Expeditionaries out.

Hoobreuk's solution was a rather simple and perhaps blunt, march to the sea. With Kosalla now actively asking for terms India would soon become an inhospitable prison for the Austrian Indian Expedition. The loss of said expedition would mean giving the Wu ground at the inevitably peace talks between the greater powers, China and the Holy Roman Empire.

9KcRr56.png

The Wu Chinese sensing the loss of a potential great victory against the Empire moved to intercept Hoobreuk at Belgaum. A tactically sound move as Belgaum was far enough away from the Austrian Fleet at Goa to deny the Imperials their precious naval support. Hoobreuk himself had also seen this move and abandoned what little cannons remained in his force as well as most of the excess supplies and took to the Jungle instead.

Zhao's response was to give chase and stop Hoobreuk, abandoning his prepared positions to fight the Austrians in Jungle Combat. The Chinese trained for mass tactics and to take advantage of overwhelming numbers and firepower were slaughtered by the Thousand and after only three days Zhao was forced to retreat north and allow the Austrians to escape.

cktP0Rq.png

The Battle at Belgaum would do little to stop the Inevitable Kosalan Surrender. As Winter now fell Hoobreuk had managed to successfully reach the Imperial Fleet in Goa and escape the Subcontinent for Japan and Korea where the new Imperial Strategy would be to mount a full defense of her Asian colonies against full force of the Wu Empire.

wxHKmtJ.jpg

With summer drawing to a close the Chinese sent a single thrust into Korea. They found lines of fortifications, bunkers and importantly machine guns waiting for them in the North Korean terrain. After some minor skirmishes the Chinese instead came up with a new strategy, to attack the undefended Siberian Territories further to the North. The Hope was for Emperor Wu Shen to sell the territories to Russia in exchange for Access to Russian Railways into Europe where the Wu could strike at the Empire much as the Japanese Colonials had done in Bejing.

beyaz-olum_847665_m.jpg

(Japanese Army Sniper taking aim at Chinese troops outside Magadan)
Theodor d'Aspre Von Hoobreuk's forces had meanwhile arrived in Korea to reinforce the defensive Garrisons, allowing the Japanese Colonials to be deployed, alongside Californian and Alaskan Mountaineer regiments into the Kamchatkan Peninsula and along the Bering coast. For the remains of the winter General Leopold von Deritch would fight the Wu in the Northern wilderness.

xXdgXJT.png

The Wu for the second time had found themselves completly unprepared for a European Monarchies willingness to throw thousands to defend what ultimately would be meaningless territory. The Chinese soon found themselves outnumbered and starving as supply lines closed with the snow. The Austrians meanwhile could supply up along the coastline from Japan using the Imperial fleet. With nearly a Million Chinese trapped in Siberia for the winter it was only inevitable before Emperor Wu Shen began calling for an end to hostilities to save his country the Embarrassment of losing a million men in Siberia of all places to Japanese and Alaskan Colonial Militias.

imGvfH0.png

Meanwhile the Knight's Transient were also preparing their own Military campaign into a different cold inhospitable wasteland. The Truce with the Kingdom of Canada had run out and Templar Troops had once again marched across the agree'd upon borders to seize more lands.

wnCi48p.png

The war would not be long, in fact it would only last little over a month as the Canadian Parliament surrendered after reports that the Americans and other powers on the continent were will unwilling to fight the Templar. Without a second front Canada had no hope against the Knights and ceded more territory to the growing Transient empire.

ZzctDjJ.png
kiLkAMy.png
mgFJaGq.png

The resulting Treaty of Edo would be an Embarrassment to the Wu. Wu shen was forced to abandon his American ambitions entirely which wouldn't too significant a loss except it also had come with the shame that for the first time, China, one and Indivisible had lost to a Western power. The Following negotiations to evacuate the remaining Chinese in Siberia broke down in the following months and while some 300,000 managed to evacuate, the Snows, War and starvation had claimed at least that number of chinese that originally marched into the Hell that was Austrian Siberia.

Such a humbling defeat for the Wu. The Holy Roman Empire just showed them how inferior their tactics are compared to yours. Well done.

Also, go Knights Transient! The Kingdom of Canada's loss just helped my favorite player in the New World grow stronger.

Chapter 38: Blood on the Flag
e4e96f277776a42ae9a88b086b1213cb4d596bc0_Maerz1848_berlin.jpg

(Depicted: The September Revolution of 1879 that threatened to topple the Holy Roman Empire)
While Thousands were dying abroad in India, Korea and Siberia unrest back in Europe had been steadily building. The National-Liberal party had promised long before to bring both change and prestige to the Austrian Crown as well as social and economic freedoms to the Imperial Populace. While the latter had been achieved it had been predominantly the captains of industry who benefitted less government oversight. With the growing specter of Socialism Kaiser Ferdinand had ended talk of welfare or government codes leaving the rich Austrian elite free to expand without having to abide by safety regulations or recognize worker rights in any real capacity.

Meanwhile the Austrian Leadership had continued the House Gag Rule regarding suffrage. Attempts from outside countries, namely Canada, Denmark and Westphalia to unify Germany as a Pan-Germanic Empire had been continually ignored by the Kaiser. The Price of such a crown would come at giving other nations an active say in the government of said Empire, which would in turn lead for a desire for greater representation in the provinces and soon the Entire system would need to be rebuilt. The German Peoples of Austria didn't particularly care for the Kaiser's desire to keep absolute control. The growing Media industry did not help things as several newspapers had begun to paint the Reichsrat as caring more about the plights of the Scottish or Indians than of German peoples in Canada, South America and in Nearby Denmark.

SP6oYEy.png

The Problem was of course much worse in Denmark as all problems were. A new political ideology had been steadily rising in power within both Danish and German circles within the country. Communists on an ideological scale were considered to be a radial form of socialist, many who had begun to follow their ideals however were anarchists, Liberals and even conservatives unhappy with the current affairs of the government. Due to 'pure' communism being define as such a vague and idealistic concept many had flocked to the bright red banner in Denmark influencing or corrupting depending on ones perspective what the movement was about. The General point all in the party agreed on was that the current Danish government needed to be taken apart, completly and rebuilt in the party's image.

KMm1qB8.png

As a means to de-incentivise the growl of the Red Hydra in Austria the Reichsrat passed several laws final legalizing Trade Unions within the country for those unaffiliated with Socialist and Communist elements. While these laws did finally allow for the workers to have some say in the economy the masses as a whole were still frustrating that the Vote was again denied. For some this 'reform' would be the final straw as the Union law had angered established capitalists, some of whom had no reservations about arming Paramilitary Pan-Germanic groups within the country.

Klg8XlM.jpg

On September 23rd 1879 Radical Pan Germanic groups rose up throughout Croatia, Bavaria and Germany itself declaring the Reichsrat and Kaiser Ferdinand to be working against the cause of greater german freedom. In Bohemia a different liberation front had risen up demanding Independence for the Kingdom of Bohemia where they hoped they could push their liberal agenda rather than struggling to make the entire empire adapt to their policies.

After a week of General Riot the army had arrived in problem cities such as Prague, Zagreb and Frankfurt. When faced with the threat of Machine Guns, Cannon and true military tactics the riots dispersed, though some still stood firm and were arrested or died attempting to hold barricades from the Imperial Army.

ZZHzPFZ.png

Rather than Advancing the Liberal agenda the September revolution had a negative effect in the capital, Kaiser Ferdinand was furious both with his council and the local governments for not seeing such a riot in advance. Rather than more reforms the Kaiser as he often did looked to his Eastern Roots and mixed them with older, tested methods of dealing with such issues. The Inquisition, something that had been left as a mere footnote in Austria's struggle to reunify the faith was reinstated and reformed into the Imperial Agency of Investigation or IAI for short. The IAI would answer directly to the Kaiser and be the first agency in the history of the Empire to carry out arrests, covert operations and even the rare political assassination in the name of The Emperor since the days of the reformation.

Denmark taking to Communism... well, they've tried so many other government forms already. Perhaps this one will be a little more effective.

I like the sound of the Imperial Agency of Investigation. Strengthens both the HRE in game and opens some opportunities in your writing.

I don't know, I wouldn't say Wu lost. Oh, so they were slightly embarrassed, boo hoo. On the other hand, they defeated Kosala, their main rival in Asia, quite decisively. This isn't a defeat for the Wu, it's just a blemish on their victory.

I suppose I should point out Wu actually added a few war goals for Korea along with Humiliate the Holy Roman Empire due to the massive WS bonus they had while they were occupying Kossala. So when they had to not only surrender but also give up Louisiana they lost a very healthy chunk of prestige and took a painful militancy hit.

Back in the saddle and hopefully no more long breaks, sorry about the extended delay.
Chapter 39: Tensions Abroad
B6578rP.png

Liberal revolutions in the Holy Roman Empire had of course inspired similar revolutions abroad in other problem areas of the world. Namely Scandinavia, Britain and Mexico. The Holy Roman revolts of course were swiftly put down by a more professional and loyal military. Communist revolutionaries were the major news out of Scandinavia despite the infancy of such parties in Europe. The Communist revolts however would pale in comparison to a new movement in scotland.

xMhhNHc.png

This time the Scottish would not settle for a relatively peaceful strike and took up armed resistance in the Scottish Highlands. Still such a revolt would be minor if Scottish Nationalism hadn't spread throughout Ireland as well where almost the entire Island had fallen under revolutionary sway. Sensing a change in winds the Byzantine Parliament still sympathetic after the heavy handed Celtic response to the last Scottish Crisis, decided to throw full support behind the rebels. The Byzantine proposal was for an equal partition with Ireland and Scotland being split into a Scottish state and the remaining Kingdoms of Wales, France, Britanny and England remaining within a 'Breton' administration.

q0Oaws9.png

Support from Kaiser Ferdinand would come quickly but would do little with some revolutionary holdouts still remaining in rural Carpathia. With Arthur IV still under the Regency council infamously referred to as 'The Council of Pigs' any offer favoring the Scottish in any way was rejected. The Russian Empire eager to find any excuse to once again invade and seize more Byzantine Land sided with the Celts and once again sides were drawn, This time the Twin Roman Empires against the upstart Russians and Celts.

oNmHFsa.png

In a lighter note the various wars that had broken out in America had once again begun to settle down. The Clear winner this time was the United States of America who beat off both the Mexican and Templar military. Immigration had finally become the determining factor in the American balance of power, and in this the United States held every single card. By Mid 1881 the Treaty of Nashville had been signed between Templar-General Isaac Montauk and American Senator Joseph Blyth.

TYoZ6Vo.png

Wishing to prove itself worthy on a more international stage the Treaty of Nashville was considered a restrained peace given how badly the Templar military botched its invasion of Georgia and Louisiana. The United States would have all it's territories returned to it from Mexico as well as general disarmament along the Western Frontier. Next a new Templar-American Border was to be established, favoring of course the Americans and dividing Virginia from Carolina and running west.

BI7q4t2.png

The original peace deal quickly had been put under scrutiny by more nationalist elements within the United States. With such a thorough defeat of the Templar and overcrowding now becoming an issue in the more urban area's of the country pressure had begun to mount for further expansion both north and westward. Several proposals were brought up ranging from an Annexation of New Anglia and Haiti to a a full 'Liberation' of Templar land along the eastern seaboard. The winner of course was the low hanging fruit, Mexico which had still continued to be a revolving door for various revolutionary groups. If America were to expand further she would need to stretch her wings out into Texas and possibly even California unaware of the wealth such land truly possessed.

iuhDsUl.png

In the Holy Roman Empire new technologies had begun to reveal vast pockets of Black Gold throughout the Empire. Oil for the better part of the Empire's history had to be obtained through Whaling or other operations. modern drilling, surveying and infrastructure along with a good amount of dumb luck had now given the Holy Roman Empire access to rich Oil deposits that some Engineers had already begun to speculate could be used as an alternative fuel to coal. Chief among these deposits would be the Oil Fields at Targoviste, Wallachia though others would be found in California and in Austrian dependencies in America and Asia.

LUnBSFQ.png

Oil of course would do little for the Holy Roman Empire in the present as relations which were already shaky to begin with had broken down yet again. With the Eastern Roman Empire refusing one final offer of a Status Quo the Celtic and Russian Empires shortly declared war in hopes of making the first strikes in what would be yet another costly war.

rQlBfN4.png

With Celtic Troops marching into Holy Roman territory the final bandage had been set into place in mending the Holy Roman Empire after the September Riots. Whether they believed their country was Germany or Rome, the Imperial Populace flooded recruitment stations amidst a new wave of propaganda in an effort to defend their homes from two front war with two of the most powerful nations on the Planet.

I'm surprised the USA did so well in their war. My poor Knights are dropping the ball, I suppose. If the USA does try and expand against Mexico, I doubt the failing government will resist their army.

Two Roman Empires fighting against the Celtic and Russian Empires... Going by their track record, I can't see the Celts holding their own. While Russia against the ERE will be somewhat even, your help will probably make this an easy war.

Chapter 41: Thier own Brand of Freedom
httpkivalibutkeducollection-imagesegyptegypt121_8b2e36eaee.jpg

(Photograph of the Suez Canal shortly after it's completion)
The Open conflict that had begun over Scottish Independence, like many original noble causes for the Great Powers that be to fight over took a back seat to the Great Game itself. Emperor Alexios Duncan was nearing the end of his life, his career had been much like Empress Victoria of Russia's a series of alternating rises and declines. This time Alexios had planned to make a lasting impact for the Empire. In a similar Vein Empress Victoria of Russia hoped to finally break the back of the Byzantine Empire, placate the Holy Romans and end the war with a return of more Russian Territory to add to Russia's growing prestige as the Third most Powerful Economy and Military in the World.

6FVCl8g.jpg

There was of course one Obstacle to both of them, The Holy Roman Empire itself who had predictably slaughtered the Celtics in the west by the Thousands and had now begun to turn it's armies to Paris and to suppress a Communist revolution in the Warzone that used to be the Kingdom of Flanders. Kaiser Ferdinand and his diplomatic corp had been firm, Scotland would be Independent and the Celtic Empire would be partitioned. The Consequences for the Balance of Power of course were obvious, The Holy Roman Empire would no longer need to fear a war on two Fronts and could impose it's will on the entirely of Europe without question should the Kaiser's demands be met.

RLge0Fk.png

In Russia progress had been much more slow. With the majority of Holy Roman Manpower in either France or Japan and Korea only a third of the army had been left to secure mild gains in Russia. The hope being the Celtic Empire could hold it's own against the far more powerful Russians, A hope that would in the end prove false as the Russians in their desire to end the war as quickly as possible had taken much of the Crimea and had performed a bold naval landing in Anatolia.

OOCZTSG.png

For Alexios Duncan the consequences quickly became apparent that a loss of Constantinople or Greece would remove any hope of the Byzantine Empire being able to stop Kaiser Ferdinand's dream of a complete Divide Et Imperia of the Celtic Empire. Duncan agree'd to a Status Quo peace with Russia and what remained of the French Government. A Betrayal that would be remembered in Vienna, and a result that would once again lead to greater liberal unrest as citizens demanded the war continue even if it meant the Empire stand alone.

5MTKsR3.png

The result of course was Alexios-Duncan and the GRP looked weak, having caved to foreign demands. The People of Greece, Anatolia and Egypt simply did not care or understand the Politics of Constantinople, Moscow and Paris. They had fought a war and then abandoned an Ally when the tide had turned. Local Legislatures had begun to fall one by one to Socialist and Liberal parties, GNP local citizens were harrassed in the streets and eventually the army would need to be called in to defend the Emperor's secret ongoing pet project after things had become particularly bad near Suez. The Following election later in the year saw the GRP almost completely voted out of the senate for a predominantly bedouin Socialist and Liberal coalition known as the SLC.

1417429443.7508.jpg

(Photo of SLC aligned Prime Minister Muhammad Bagdid)
The SLC favorite for Prime Minister was Muhammad Bagdid a war veteran of the Mongolian
Intervention turned Politician. Bagdid had been a conservative most of his life but had over time grown disillusioned with the greek controlled government in the capital despite the rising Bedouin population. By the 1876 Bagdid had joined the SLC and quickly used his leadership experience and magnetic personality to attract Greeks and expansionist elements to the party.

Once in office Bagdid introduced a new Economic plan for the Empire to do exactly the thing that the GNP feared, Expanding the Empire into more Arabic land, further reducing greece representation in Parliament.

The Plan, known as 'Economic Reconquest' was to focus the Empire on it's long neglected sphere in Africa. The Various minor states in Ethiopia, Nubia and the Horn of Africa had been completly dependent on the Empire for some time and had been vassal states in all but name. Bagdid offered these countries full representation in the Roman Senate as well as inclusion in his plans for a Welfare and Pension system. While also threatening to revoke their Economic and Military privileges if they did not accept.

9T9nLks.jpg

The Ethiopian states accepted and with momentum from successful diplomacy the SLC began to paint the recent expansion as a great conquest in Greece and Anatolia, gathering more greeks away from the GNP. In Ethiopia itself the response was much more heavily mixed. Despite promises of representation many still saw their national sovereignty had been stripped away, no different than what the Holy Roman Empire had done to the Native states just a few hundred miles to the south.

vxTBnMA.png

Meanwhile in America, Mexico had, once again collapsed. This time Jacobite Rebels had managed to seize the Capital again. The Third Mexican Republic had been proclaimed headed by a small military Junta of victorious rebels. Elections of course were promised once things had 'settled down'. With rising communist forces in the North and south, such 'settling' down could take years if not forever. Meanwhile the Americans continued to wait over the Mississippi river, waiting and sharpening Bayonets.

RR9Bfbh.png

For the Celtic and Holy Roman Empires things the war had not truly ended. Swift Success on the western front had left Kaiser Ferdinand in an awkward position once hostilities officially ended. There were of course calls to continue the war, not that there was much of a war to fight. The Young King Arthur IV had been brought to Neutral Iceland for the duration of the war and was now going preparing to return. The original 'Council of Pigs' had been arrested or had fled to the corners of the Celtic Empire leaving the government effectively headless. Ferdinand had his own interim council of Scots, Frenchmen and Breton's appointed almost all of them with liberal leaning. The 'German Council' was now prepared to reform the Celtic Legislature, opening up suffrage rights for the nobility. For Ferdinand the hope was that he had 'Rolled a snowball down a mountain' and that the resulting Chaos would eventually lead to a Scottish, Irish and French Referendum, and final breakup of the Celtic Empire through no direct action of the Empire itself.

ylFfWJ4.png

Further news from the Americas was the defeat of Argentina in it's quest to unite the South American continent. The Medici-Fugger's had been lusting over complete control over their neighbors for years but a Final coalition of Columbia Venezuela and Haiti had put an end to such ambitions. Though the war had exhausted both parties and now both Peru and Brazil remained under Argentina at least for the moment.

BuPwFB9.png

Despite continued control of the Malvinas Rodrigo II of Argentina had swallowed his pride and 'Made a deal with the devil' asking the Holy Roman for formal protection and assurance of a Status Quo in South America. While the Medici could not control the entire continent they still had one of the largest nations on the continent and now needed protection and economic support if they ever wished to make proper use of it.

7VeRlCc.png

In the Eastern Roman Empire the Emperor's secret project had finally been completed. The Suez Canal, long a dream of his forefathers Emperor Alexios had made a Reality. While he had lost control of the government he had at least guaranteed his legacy as the Alexios Channel now had given people freedom of movement and trade from the Mediterranean into the far east.

3VlPqNe.png

For the far east itself the Suez Canal was a disaster, not by any fault of the Canal itself but of it's timing with one of the largest volcanic Eruptions experienced by mankind. For the people of Southeast Asia the Eruption was a bad open followed by complete economic crisis as European trade skyrocketed, crops failed and Coptic priests began speaking word about the end times. Particularly in China famine in the Cordoban Colonies had become widespread, adding in yet another barrel of gunpowder to the Asian powderkeg.

NR5zGuz.png

If there was semblance of uneasy peace between 1881 and 1883 however that had now quickly ended. American war drums had begun to beat yet again as soldiers crossed into texas. America's Manifest Destiny would not be denied.

The ERE's "Economic Reconquest" sounds like they noticed how well things are going for the HRE and decided to just copy you. Not the worst plan, considering your success.

Mexico just keeps collapsing. America's Manifest Destiny won't even be difficult if they aim south. Speaking of collapsing, it sounds like the Celtic Empire's time is nearing its end.

Chapter 41: All the Tea in China
Naval_battle_between_Taiping-Qing_on_Yangtze.jpg

(Naval Battle between Wu and Colonial Cordoba on the Onset of the Yue Rebellion)
The Three Years between 1883 and 1886 would be defined by Two major wars, Not in Europe but in America and in Asia. In Europe the collapse of the Celtic Empire was the main headline as the new Imperial aligned government left Spain out in the cold. In response to the Fall of the Celtic Empire the Spanish Government and economy was now free'd from it's overbearing ally in Paris and could finally strike out on its own. What the Spanish did not except however was events on the other side of the world were about to make the Iberian Peninsula and the loyalty of the new Spanish regime the focus of half the world.

D2WUMpw.png

Cordoban China had been a longstanding point of Tension between the Wu and European powers. Cordoba had managed to remain unalligned in Europe by virtue of garrunteeing it's vast chinese markets to both the Holy Roman, Celtic and Eastern Roman Empires. With the Holy Roman and Eastern Roman Empires expanding thiere own spheres in Africa and India and the Fall of the Celtic Empire trade with Cordoban China had fallen, severely and in an effort to keep the colony profitably the local Cordoban government had pushed severe formerly Yue territories to the breaking point.

It wouldn't take long for the Wu to respond to native chinese revolts, weapons were sent within weeks. Wu army personnel supplying arms to Yue rebels eventually would be arrested, and executed providing Emperor Wu Shen enough leverage to declare war and overrun the colony before the Holy Roman or Russian Empires could threaten to Interfere.

ft9OU9y.png

The War would be swift, ruthless and bloody and mere months after the official fighting began Chinese and Rebel forces had absolute control over Cordoban China with only a few Colonial holdouts existing along the coastline, still alive due to Cordoba's slim advantage at sea. Meanwhile the Kingdoms of Portugal and Spain had begun to mobilize soldiers and out of fear King Gotzelo VI Anniona-Cortez agreed to surrender his Chinese Territories so long as his armies be allowed to safely evacuate China and return to North Africa. The Chinese Agreed and the hasty treaty of Singapore was signed, formally ending the Colonization of China for good.

L6ELgE2.png

The Wu, as 'Rightful' overlords of China took the Lion's share of lands for themselves, allocating a small area Near Macau to an autonomous Yue republic . The Yue was independent however only in name, and the small republic quickly became no more than a glorified Internment camp for those that the Wu administration found to be in the way of a proper reconquest of China.

1ZfApkl.png

In America the Unopposed United States Army had taken control nearly 60% of the the Mexican Republic. What little resistance there was came from Rebel forces rather than the Mexican military. Things had become so bad that the Western Half of the country, the half the United States had left relatively alone had now become no better than a lawless, devoid hellhole dominated not only by Mexican Rebels and rogue soldiers but ambitious Californian Mercenaries looking to lay claim to the region for themselves. The United States of course had no interest in subjugating so much territory as to double it's size and reinforced it's position in Eastern Mexico though a formal peace treaty was never drawn up.

cvqz7h9.png

Mexico had now effectively become a failed state. With American troops now leaving the reigning Republican party had proven that it was the United States alone that could bring the torch of Freedom to America. President Rodrigo Atlanta would late give a fiery speech to the military and press in the now American City San Antonio proclaiming America's destiny to unite the continent, strike down the Templar to the North and bring American law and democracy from Sea to Shining Sea.

NoEtWlf.png

With a Population Rivaling Westphalia from Immigration and having tripled in Size since that start of the Century the United States was now preparing to Join the Ranks of the true powers of the World. The Upstart in America had beaten all comers, and worse still She was a Democracy just not in name but form as well.

p1B29zn.png

With Cordoba humiliated the Spanish and Portuguese had begun a long planned reconquest of their own territories in North Africa. The Great Powers had other plans however and Kaiser Ferdinand II insisted in a Post War meeting in Iberia to re-evaluate the Byzantine-Celtic Treaty. The Spanish fearing Imperial intervention dared not refuse.
CongressVienna.jpg

(1886 Council of Burgos, With representatives throughout the world including the United States and Wu in attendance)
The Future of the Celtic Empire and her allies was of course the purpose of the meeting but now with America and Wu prepared to push their own influence at the Council things had escalated in a sense and of course Russia and the Eastern Roman Empire were eager to reverse the damage caused by Kaiser Ferdinand in Paris. What was to be a simple revision of a Treaty had become a meeting to determine the fate of the world.

The Major points of the conference would ultimately be the Future of India, America, Iberia and the Celtic Empire. Though the most Powerful Kaiser Ferdinand and his staff would find himself fighting a hard battle on almost all fronts on all of these points.

The Ultimate Results from the 1886 Council would be as follows.
- The Wu 'Liberation' of European China would be recognized, In exchange Wu would stop all efforts to hinder Indian Unification.
-Iberia, meaning Cordoba, Spain and Portugal would fall under Imperial Control, In exchange the Imperial Celtic Administration would be removed immediately by an Elected Parliament alongside the now of age Arthur IV.
-America's conquest of Mexico would be recognized and the young Democracy would be allowed to enforce it's laws in the Mexican Territory until a Council appointed government could rebuild the country.
-South America would be opened up to trade with the Caribbean, China and Europe, though the Holy Roman Empire would be allowed to keep it's competitive advantages.
-Formal Borders between Russia and the Eastern Roman Empire, Mongolia and Wu.
-Formal Border recognition in Africa between Mali, Cordoba, the Holy Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire.
Among other minor disputes being settled. The Powder keg of Scotland and Scandinavia of course would end up being completly ignored in hopes that whatever rebel sentiment would now die off due the Liberalization of Denmark and the Celtic Empire.

Imperial Policy regarding spain of course was to be the same as Imperial policy regarding South America before it. Entry into the Empire's economic treaties in exchange for military protection. For Spain overall this would be an improvement but of course so long as Iberia was now laid under the Empire's Iron Curtain it would be forced to be remain at peace despite growing pan-Iberian unrest.

Of course as had been common during the last century one invention was about to change the game, forever forcing Nations to redraw their borders and interests not on natural borders, cultural history or prestige but on the resources they would so desperately crave.

Next up is a World Update since its been 50 years since we started in 1836. Things have changed, quite a bit more than I expected, especially considering in the Test Game things stayed really peaceful and stagnant.

Mexico has unfortunately fallen into a Revolt Spiral that they simply can't dig themselves out of. Of course thanks to their Cores the USA has been more than happy to come knocking and take as much land as they can, and they probably aren't done due to the "Conquer the South" event giving them cores on basically everything around them.

How's Kosala doing? I remember in EUIV they were quite scary.
Terrible, much to my eternal Dismay. In fact they've fallen out of GP status a few times despite being #3 in Population (#4 is Kamarupa the East Indian Empire) I'd blame China but usually they lose before China even arrives as Kamarupa seems to have gone full Prussia with how powerful their troops are in comparison to everyone around them.

I was not expecting the USA to do this well considering their neighbors. I honestly expected them to be annexed by this point, not dominating Mexico and posing a threat to their northern competitors.

Looking forward to the world update. The 1886 Council has shaken things up a bit and it'll be good to see how your economy is fairing compared to the AI's.

World Update #1 50 Years of Anniona and Iron
GMqDThr.jpg
Starting off with Europe yet again, in the 50 Years since start much of the map has remained the same. However as one goes further north things change rather drastically. Firstoff Russia now once again has access to the Black Sea, The borders of Flanders, Westphalia and Russia have also changed. Westphalia is quite a bit larger and has managed to play both Russia and The Holy Roman off eachother long enough to Thrive in an otherwise chaotic environment. Russia and the Holy Roman Empire of course have made thier own gains as well.

The once great power of Denmark however has become the whipping boy for Sweden, Westphalia and even Flanders and is still subject to constant nationalist uprising in Norway. The Celtic Empire has also fallen into decline and is no longer considered a great power by her peers. Though it was only a matter of time without a strong military to defend the Rhineland from the Holy Roman Empire and Westphalia. The Remaining Celtic Rhineland will likely be a prime target for Flanders or Westphalia now that the Celts are weak and alone.

Since it was requested a few times, This is the extend of the Mongolian Empire. Not at its height however as the Mongols lost significant portions of territory to the Muhammid Caliphate (Iraq), Russia and the Wu Dynasty. Still they are one of the largest continuous landpowers in the world with a Massive population as a kicker. Mongolia however is a paper tiger and while it is now western it only continues to exist becuase Russia and the Eastern Roman Empire prefer to have a nice healthy buffer state against China and who can really blame them.
NIYIRkr.jpg

Working our way south we have China, Japan and Korea. The most notable changes are of course, No Korea anymore and the Wu have for the most part reunified China. Wu China is right now without a doubt the single most powerful country in the world but it still remains isolated and technologically backward. Also due to the Holy Roman Empire, Russia and the Eastern Roman Empire's influence in Asia Wu has few friends in Asia, and next to no sphere outside it's puppet states.

Malaysia is shockingly still together. Ethnically divided tons of uncored lands and even several early wars against China couldn't kill the Coptic Republic of the East. Malaysia however is no longer a great power, it's star having been eclipsed by the rising tide in India. Malaysia otherwise has been shockingly stable and now has cored most of its unaccepted territory, she has continued to maintain her alliances with Kosala and The HRE further limiting Wu influence.

Not much to really talk about down under. Since the USA managed to climb so quickly and now holds the #9 spot Australia ends up getting scraps of immigrants that dont go to the USA, Columbia or Haiti. Australia peacefully remains allied to it's liberators Malaysia and the Holy Roman Empire but rarely gets involved at all.

As you can see, India is a mess. Kosala is bigger, tougher and loses every single war they fight. Meanwhile the Rival Raj of Kamarupta has been expanding and developing faster and commands the finest Military in Asia outside of Japan. Though even the Prussia of the East cant do much if China wanted to block an Indian unification, so Kamarupta remains Wu China's only true friend in hopes that some day they will back a Indian Empire.

One of the only 'Went as expected' Stories in this update. The ERE has basically stayed the course and for the most part held thier ground against Russia. The Fact that the ERE achieved this however is amazing as they have only 183 active divisions out of their max of 300. To put that in context, Wu has 300 (I wasn't lieing when I said that the AI literally sends masses of mobilized untrained armies at me), and the Holy Roman Empire has a whopping 546 at this point in time. The ERE's main rival, Russia has 372 Divisions, Just over double the ERE's.

Moving onto Africa there are three major powers on the continent, Mali which is an on and off again #8 GP, The Holy Roman Empire which controls the majority of the continent and the Eastern Roman Empire. The Holy Roman swathes of africa for the most part have remained undeveloped except for a two railroad lines, one running up from Cape to lines in the Eastern Roman Empire and the other running up from cape, through Mali and up to Tunis.

Leaping Across the Pond we have America in all its fragmented backwards wartorn glory. The Knights Transient, Favorites to win the showdown in North America have actually been stalled. Though they butcher the Canadians every few years that have time and again tried and failed to conquer Louisiana and the United States. The Major change here from 1836 is course is, New Anglia has been kicked off the continent completely and her holdings there have been partitioned between the remaining powers. Quebec as well is gone, being one of the first casualties in a failing political climate.

With the Rise of the United States of America however things might be turning around as a powerful democracy might just be what the America's need to finally carve thier own destiny rather than fight for vast stretched of underdeveloped land.

2wsmqhc.jpg

Last up is South America which as south america often does, as remained irrelevant outside of its own politics. Brazil and Peru are of course no more, replaced by a powerful and warlike Argentina with intent to unite the Continent. Though for the moment they have stalled and Columbia and Venezuela have time to lick their wounds and prepare for the next wave.

Heres the up to date list of GP's and rankings. The USA should be #8 right now but of course Ceylon just felt the need to photobomb since the celts were swiftly kicked out. I'm not quite sure how the hell I have so much prestige, though it doesn't change much and if it does i'll remove some since I'm fairly sure one of the events of decisions I took was bugged. Otherwise as expected China is broken and has tons of industry and military power despite being outnumbered by the next 4 countries in both factory and division count. Wu's biggest Asset is still its population and population alone.

Though this is where Russia comes in as without Wu Russia would be the #2 Power behind Austria. The AI has done a remarkable job keeping up considering Russia's back and forth tug of war in Mongolia and Crimea and Imperial Invasions from the west. Empress Victoria for all her faults has made Russia a world power, strong enough to give the Superpowers of Wu and the HRE pause while also being economically healthy and democratic of all things.

Next up are the Two India Brothers who like to fight alot and get nothing done. I'm fairly sure the only reason Kosalla is so high on the list at all is it's population. Otherwise the other powers of note are the ERE which has been kicked out of it's #4 slot by Kosala and Westphalia who now both have a fairly comfortable status quo on the list. Westphalia of course, if it can form the NGF will likely pass the ERE but thats fairly unlikely meaning this might be the order the GP's will stay in for the rest of the game, barring a Celtic resurgence or Unification of India.

UeVaYTJ.png

And Finally heres the world Map 50 years in. The World has become fairly blobby but generally (outside of the Massive HRE) Pretty balanced. Now as things move forward the communists are gaining steam, Great wars will be unlocked soon and the various powederkegs of India, America and Scandinavia might just explode and force the entire world to draw up sides in a war which none could ever conceive.

Fantastic world update. So many hot spots on the map for potential World Wars down the line. The Celtic Empire is falling apart, Wu is determined to rule its region and probably form China, the Indian brothers are constantly vying to unite the subcontinent, North America has been crazy the whole game... So much fun.

Don't think Canada will be around for the next world update. Columbia and Venezuela may well be eaten up by Argentina by then as well. I wonder if Malaysia and Australia will continue to find success by staying out of the rest of the world's way. Above all else though, I'm hoping the HRE will have dethroned Wu.

Soldier pops I think. I only noticed the huge regiment disparity recently when I was sizing up a potential invasion of China and noticed thier army was ridiculously small for some reason.

Of course I have an ace in the hole in regards to late game mil score. A navy
