Annexing the Portuguese Empire

Playing as (Nat) Spain my initial goal was to make the Iberian peninsula under the Spanish flag. Taking Portugal proper is easy enough however I cannot annex Portugal yet until I take all her colonies.

So after island hopping a bit around the Atlantic and taking a few African provinces along the way I run into trouble trying to get to East Africa and Macao. After rebasing my fleet in W. Africa, the closest I can get to Portuguese East Africa is 3400 km exceeding the 3000 limit for my transports. Haven't even thought about how to take Macao.

In between us in Africa is the British Empire and South Africa, don't really want to start a war with them and besides, it would take much too long as I'm only interested in annexing Portugal at the moment.

So is it possible for Spain to annex the Portuguese Empire without a DOW on someone else?

I've looked at other threads that talk about "annexing" Portugal but I realized they were really talking about puppeting Portugal or signing a Peace Treaty that annexes everything but the capitol.

I want the whole thing. Annexed.

Can I do it and how? Thanks!

Sue for peace, asking for all their colonies. They will accept if you occupy the whole of Portugal.

Then, after the peace treaty, invade them again.



It's either that or you need to ally or invade someone, so you can use a naval base closer to Macao.

Clever! Perhaps a bit gamey but I'm sure a similar situation has occurred in real life to make it plausible.

Thinking about my situation again, I do find it somewhat strange that a country that was able to colonize much of the world would have such difficulty getting around with their boats nearly 500 years later, but I digress.

Yeah, the only time I've been able to fully annex Portugal militarily was when they joined the Axis and I was the US, so the UK took their African territories, and I just had to use a few amphib landings to take their islands -- and since the UK controls Hong Kong, getting Macao is easy.

As Spain, their was is the best -- sue for peace, get all the non-continental VPs, the re-declare and annex. Bit of a dissent hit, and a little gamey, but it works!

Ally with England and buy Diego Garcia island in the Indian ocean then leave the alliance.

Wouldn't getting some military access, though that's a pain to do, be easier than war? Or even temporary allying, as others suggest.

Pretty sure you can't attack from territory you get military access to.
