At the very least I want to give less valuable land to allies to defend and patrol for partisans. As Germany there are times you invade a country simply to deny it to the enemy, not to takes it's meager resources and IC, or perhaps the increase in those resources and IC means more for an ally than it does to me. I would rather giver Italy all of Yugoslavia and Greece. They get a little boost and they have the troops to spare for occupation forces while Germany is stretched thin as it is.

In Vic 2 I used the console commands to transfer provinces after wars to make better borders, usually for the benefit of the stupid AI.

hopefully, the console will have something like provid that gives province id# and core/ownership TAGs as well as a not too cumbursome changeowner command.

To be honest, the provinces to look kinda bad. They are all jagged and one can't really have a "smooth" border, unless it's a river
There's something really wrong when you have to rely on a river to provide a "smooth" border, rather than have smooth borders except where rivers meander a bit.

There's something really wrong when you have to rely on a river to provide a "smooth" border, rather than have smooth borders except where rivers meander a bit.

it would be best if they kinda "smooth out" the border, and kinda divide them into regions like in VIC2, just so that the borders look better

why should the borders be smooth? this isn't civ 5 where provinces are all hexagons. real borders are ugly and jagged because they are generally based on some geographical identifier, like a mountain or ** a river. just look at the IRL norway-sweden border; now there's a face a mother couldn't love.

speaking of rivers, PDS isn't "relying" on rivers to form a smooth border. they have provinces end at rivers for the sake of gameplay since in most games its hard to tell what province has modifiers like river crossing and such by looking at it, which is irritating and can be detrimental in multiplayer. it's a helpful simplification.

and regions?... really? have you even looked at the map? you can't even see the provinces for the regions! unless you zoom way in.

States is the smallest part that changes hands. You cant take just a province, unless it happens to be state sized (hi Luxemburg). but yes you can pick parts etc

Could you further define how large states generally are? Having Luxembourg as a province-state gives me hope that they will be small enough for the possibility of relatively attractive borders. Also, will we have any Victoria-style examples of a state being split up between powers, or are states geographical boxes based on existing historical borders at game start?

I actually do like the use of states/regions, I just always thought the Victoria ones were a bit too large in several areas.

First of all there is nothing wrong with the norway-sweden border. Infact it is better looking than most european borders ATM. As for the idea of jagged vs smooth borders I have no issue with either however the current map doesn't have those. Currently borders are somewhere in the middle and it looks rather uncanny to say the least. Like I posted earlier the states I have seen all look rather random aside from historical borders. I really hope they give some more thought to what borders people will actually want to make cause otherwise map modders are going to have their work cut out for them.

So, I've seen a bit of HOI4 gameplay, which explained a lot, but I haven't got an answer for a question I've had for a long time: Will you be able to demand specific provinces? I always wanted to have the ability to shape the future border of my nation by annexing specific provinces based on either looks, or value (because I love my pretty borders :p )
If this is not a thing, I would suggest the devs to do something similar for border freaks like me ;)

Sine you building factories, AA etc on a State level it wouldn't make sense to claim smaller pieces.

Only states are allowed to be taken?

This is bad, more acceptable in HoI series but still bad. I hated this strongly in Vicky2, because it broke the game sometimes while making it unnecessarily restrictive.

Hopefully Victoria 3 will not have this critical flaw.

Thing is that in vicky 2 states weren't really that important. There was to inherit benefit to holding an entire state and the casus belli's didn't account for the possibility of a split state. In HOI4 states seem to work much like an EU4 province and the actual provinces themselves only exist for troops to march through. So long as the state boundaries are drawn in such a way that they can account for the borders a player will want to make it should be fine. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case.

Two things:
1. When we're partitioning a country, are we allowed to give provinces to neutral countries (e.g. Denmark was given part of Schleswig after World War I, but it was neutral)?
2. About how big are states? I have yet to see them in any of the videos I've watched.

About 1, I think a 'free country' casus belli just like Victoria 2 would work perfectly.

In that game, select the casus belli in question as a wargoal (primary or secondary), select which state is to be liberated, select who is going to be the new owner. Only those who have cores on some or all parts of the state are allowed on the list. Win the war and when signing peace, enforce the wargoal. The entire state would be handed over to the recipient.

For example, if Prussia conquers the area north of Kiel, and at some point you go to war with them, you can have them hand over the area back to Denmark. Works on every nation, for example you can ask Austro-Hungarian Empire to liberate Czechoslovakia or liberate northern Greece from Ottomans.

This system is not without problems though, mostly due to this utterly stupid 'only states can be conquered' requirement.
