Also in the late spring of this year, many village elders from across the county met at the fair in York and decided that instead of sowing on certain fields in certain years and certain other fields in certain other years, as they have done hitherto, they will now sow certain grains on certain fields in certain years and certain other grains on certain other fields in those same years, and on yet certain other fields nothing at all in those same years, and that those certain field shall be rotated according to a certain schedule on different years, so that the soil may yield yet greater bounties than was previously the case, and the Earl was sorely pleased. And village elder Tostig from Whitby is certain that this will work.

Simply delightful. Thanks.

The current political situation in Outremer:

outremer.jpg

To take a short tour, you'll notice my most recent conquest, El-Arish, as the orange province in northern Sinai. The huge blue realm surrounding it is the Fatimid Kingdom, and no, I'm not going to take on those guys in the foreseeable future - sorry, guys. I know it's not quite in the crusading spirit, but they're way too strong for me right now, even with all of England as backup. Jerusalem is the province circled in white, BTW.

The red realm to the east is the Abbasid Kingdom and to their north and east we have Alp Arslan's Seljuk Turks, and they are seriously huge. In addition to what you see on the screenie, they have most of Iraq and all of Persia, and a few other provinces.

To the north, we have the sad remains of the Byzantine Empire, and in the upper left corner is Hungary in grey and the Principality of Serbia in blue, and outh of them the southern tip of Norman Italy, the county of Lucca, which is occupied by the HRE - as the little yellow box shows.

And here we have William Despencer, Earl Alain's heir apparent.

william.jpg

Now, when looking at this guy, I can't help but think that something went terribly wrong somewhere. While his father and mother were both extremely competent people, young William isn't. I'm sort of wondering whether to follow Elmokki's example in the other AAR and get rid of him before it's too late - thus making room for his considerably more competent younger cousin - or whether just to forge on and take what comes.

But that Martial Skill 2 is not going to be pretty, considering we have just entered the Crusading Era....

Nice Crusading . The Fatmids are huge! I'm surprised they don't just swallow you up to save their Islamic brothers.

How long do you expect the Earl to live?

He's 75 years now, but still in excellent health. I think two or three years more isn't unlikely. The 'Death of Old Age' event can strike at any time, though, so you never know.

I don't know for sure about the Fatimids, but if I were to rationalize IC, I'd say that since the sheikdom that I conquered owned a province that used to belong to the Fatimids, they could be rebels or defectors of some sort. And in that case, maybe King Abdullah of Cairo would rather see a harmless county from far across the sea own that province than his rivals of the El-Arish family... or something like that. :)

Guys, there has been an unexpected development. It seems that for the purpose of continuing the game, the only proper successor is a direct child of the current character. This means that I won't be able to continue this game as it is now, since my heir is the grandson of the character.

I have tried running through a few quick scenarioes, and pretty much the only way to continue is to wait until I have enough money to assassinate the dear countess, immediately marrying a younger woman and hoping that the by then some 80 year-old Earl will be able to produce a new heir before he dies - assuming he hasn't already. This seems both sort of radical and physiologically unlikely in several ways, so instead, I'm going to finish this AAR and start a new one.

Thank you for reading along, and I hope to see you in the next AAR thread as well. :)

You could reload a savegame, gift young William DeSpencer with a county or two, save and reload as that county. You'll be changing dynasties, but will be able to continue as your grandson.

Can't you grant your grandson some sort of title (say, Count of Malta), save, then load as him, and wait to inherit? I'm sure no-one would consider that cheating...

Can a bastard son inherit the throne? Because if they could..... you might be able to F12 trigger an event that gives you a bastard, thus saving your dynasty for a little while longer.

According to the manual's description of the bastard trait, one of the minuses is "Do not inherit" (sic).

There's a way in-game to legitimize bastards, isn't there? THough even if he sired one now he'd be an infant and likely to die.

It seems silly that a granchild can't inherit in these situations. Otherwise why have anything but Salic Primogeneture?

Still, this will join a respectable field of single-reign CK AARs, and be able to hold its head up amoung them.

Good news - the option suggested by Lord Asharak and richvh is of course the obvious to continue the game, so I'll take a short stint as Count of Malta and hope that the old Earl doesn't do anything foolish before he dies. Thanks a lot, guys. :)

I'll think I'll just have to edit the savegame to make young William have Count of York as primary title once he inherits, then we should be back in business.

fabr25-2-forside.jpg

- Anno Domini 1103

Late in the month of January of this year, we heard from the steward of Malta that a ship from Tyrus had been wrecked on that island and that the shipbuilders had inspected it and marvelled at the craftsmanship, and that they believe that building facilities to build such ships would be very beneficial should we desire to move great numbers of men in the future. But the treasury is exceedingly empty after the recent crusade, and the Earl had no desire to move great numbers of men in the near future, and did so decide not to grant funds for such a project. [New Tech Spreads: Large Ship Building]

On the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (Sep 15th), Earl Alain grew wonderly wroth with his grandson Sir William Despencer over an issue not well understood, and he did call him many foul names and said all manners of curses over him and he did finally order him forthwith to journey to the island of Malta and take that as his fief until the day when the Earl had passed on to the hereafter, and Sir William did so, and we were all sorely bewildered. [Switched to William as Count of Malta, and waited to inherit York]

On the fifth day before the Day of All Saints (Oct 27th), we received news that the treacherous Emirate of Tunisia had declared war on the County of El-Arish, which had presently belonged to the Earl before he gave it to young Anne de Bretagne to hold as fief. And the King and the Duke of Norfolk both did arm and gird themselves speedily and set sail towards Outremer once more, for such treachery and aggression is most unbecoming. [Another crusade opportunity. Wrong timing, though, since Malta doesn't have enough troops. Will just sit quietly and wait.]

- Anno Domini 1105

In this year, Earl Alain did crusade against the heathens of the Emirate of Tunesia, and caused much slaughter among them.

- Anno Domini 1106

In this year, Earl Alain did crusade against the heathens of the Emirate of Tunesia, and caused much slaughter among them. [That guy sure is healthy]

- Anno Domini 1107

On this the third day before the Feast of St. Michael (Nov 8th), our Lord Earl Alain de Bretagne succumbed to illness while making war upon the heathens in northern Africa, and yielded up his spirit and did pass into the hereafter. And there was great mourning in the realm, for the Earl was passing wise and God-fearing. May God look with kindness upon His faithful in these troubled times. And his heir, William Despencer, Earl of Malta, did travel to the province of Bejaija there to meet with and take the proper oath of vassalage to His Grace the Duke of Norfolk. And Earl William did raise his retinues and had them set sail for Tunisia. And there did he make great battle against the heathens. [Finally.]

- Anno Domini 1108

In the month of January of this year, Earl William did move against the Tunisian fortress of Bejaija on the coast of the Mare Nostrum, and although the superior forces of the Emir did beat us back several times, through the Graceful and timely intercession of God, we did finally manage to reduce the fortress and capture it, and Earl William added the province to his demesne, and this happened in the month of August this year. [Even got a province out of this. Not bad.]

And for the rest of the year, Earl William supported the Duke of Norfolk and the King in their actions against the Emir.

- Anno Domini 1109

In the month of February of this year, Duke Ralph of Norfolk with Earl William and several other nobles did storm and capture the Tunisian fortress in the province called Tell Atlas, and thereby was the foul Emirate of Tunisia laid in ruin and torn asunder, and the Emir would be no more. And the Duke did parcel out the land to several of his loyal retainers, and thus was the Kingdom of England and all of Christendom made stronger. Praise be to God!

Africa after the Second Crusade

And also in the month of February of this year did Earl William return to York to assume and bestow offices and patronage, and several new courtiers were honoured greatly. Among them were Blanche Clifford who was made Steward, her sister Adelaide who is surely unsurpassed in beauty and who was made Chancellor, Sir Thomas of El-Arish who was made Marshall, and Burhanaddin of Agrigento who despite being a foul Saracen and unbeliever was made Spymaster. God protect us all.

Late in the month of April, we did learn that the Most Holy Lord Pope had passed away, and surely all of Christendom does mourn greatly, and the Curia has elected a new Pope, and he is Richard, Bishop of Exeter, and said to be much like his predecessor in disposition.

The new pope. Not much of an improvement over the last one.

On the fourth day after the Feast of Martinmas, Earl William did marry Katarzyna of Kujawy, the daughter of the Duke of Krakow in the realm of Poland. And she was a lady of great beauty and excellent family, and there was great celebration and merriment in York and Sleswig and the other demesnes of Earl William. And may God bless them with long life and healthy heirs in great numbers.

Let's hope this countess is better at producing male children than the last one. :)

Even if she can produce some sons I dread to think what their military ratings will be, seeing as how both parents are ranked 2.
