Will the Anglo-Iraqi war be set off by event in 1941, or will the germans have to invest in a Coup to set it off? Adding to that, what do the focus trees look like? Are they all generic for minor nations, or will there be a few special ones, such as Argentina joining the Axis for the Falklands(Malvinas)?

The Anglo-Iraqi War would probably be railroading the game pretty bad, same with Argentina: I think they would leave those kinds of events up to the player and maybe provide special events if the player executes a certain course of action that allows for said historical event.

I would say it could be represented by Germany and or Italy influencing Fascist support in the country and initiating a coup/civil war when the influence is high enough but I don't think Iraq is a vassal state and is just British territory

Iraq had been granted limited independence in 1932 and so should be shown as its own country and not just part of the UK. There was a treaty that severely limited the number of troops that Britain could have stationed in Iraq - only a couple of battalions of locally recruited airfield guards. With such limited access for British forces would it be right to show Iraq as a puppet or should it be independent? If its a puppet there should be a mechanism for puppets to try and break free of their overlords and if its not there needs to be a mechanism for coups that can happen without external influence. While Germany provided encouragement, there was very little tangible support and its possible the coup would have happened at some stage anyway.

The U.K. does have a national focus point based around Iraq, so it won't be ignored.

Surely this should be a National Focus for Germany? I'm sure the UK didn't want to initiate a revolt in Iraq!

Iraq had been granted limited independence in 1932 and so should be shown as its own country and not just part of the UK. There was a treaty that severely limited the number of troops that Britain could have stationed in Iraq - only a couple of battalions of locally recruited airfield guards. Agreed, Iraq should definitely be a British puppet, as should Egypt. Germany should also have Danzig as a puppet.

IMHO, more scripted event, for people who are replaying WW2 as best as possible, would be a great addition. Even the small ones that dont really play a major role, but enought to pay attention to their outcome, should be included. Who knows what can happen?

Of course the event may not fire off around there actual dates, or at all, depending on how the world is "shaped" at the time.

I think Iraq is a British puppet in 1936, although Egypt is just owned by the UK outright -- I presume this is to avoid supply and AI problems due to the Mediterranean Fleet being stationed at Alexandria.

Something that will hopefully be fixed in a DLC: sure, for most purposes treating Egypt as UK territory is a fair approximation, but as we all know Egypt was a nominally independent (and, what's more, neutral) country that did actually waver towards joining the Axis before joining the Allies late in the war.

I wonder if it will be possible to create events that can tell whether the game had 'historical mode' ticked or not? That way, you could potentially leave it out for sandbox mode (or maybe put in a modified, more sandbox, event, or set of linked events) but have the German-encouraged coup in historical mode?

I think that if the coup detat system works well, all this can be player driven instead of script driven, which would feel much better.

So if you're playing as Germany, rather than actually using the mechanism that's right there for you to encourage coups, you click through a bunch of events?

Both these comments ignore the National Focus tree, which is one of HoI4's big innovations. That is the way in which players can set strategy in a historical or non-historical way. I imagine that you won't have a scripted event called "Pearl Harbor"; instead, Japan will be weighted to make a series of National Focus choices: Naval Armaments + Overseas Expansion > Southern Strategy > Pearl Harbor.

If you're playing as Germany, you won't click through a series of events, but 'Middle East uprising' will be a NF option. In historical mode, that will be moderately weighted. In sandbox mode, it won't.

My understanding is that focuses just apply bonuses and maluses*, and maybe annexing territory, once you fulfil the requirements - I doubt they'll be doing anything so precise as the kind of troop-deployment etc. that took place in the Anglo-Iraqi war.

*imagine how this sentence would read if I used the latin plural ii-ending rule

So if you're playing as Germany, rather than actually using the mechanism that's right there for you to encourage coups, you click through a bunch of events?

I'm not sure - it depends on what the event system has to work with, but an event could give you an option between supporting an Iraqi coup, with a bonus to the effectiveness of the in-game mechanic but at the cost of PP, or not supporting the coup. I'm just theorycrafting, until we know how the coup system works (in detail) and what we can do with events, it's all guesswork. If you can somehow tell the AI to focus on couping Iraq, then an event probably wouldn't be needed, but if you couldn't, then events (like national focusses, or as a national focus) could help the AI take the steps it did historically. I'm deffo not suggesting 'eventing' out of in-game systems, but in this example, I suspect the in-game systems, on their own, won't be precise enough to lead to historical results (and my comment was in the context of a historical mode-only event that was very much pushing towards what happened historically - I'm not suggesting it's a good idea in a sandbox playthrough at all).

So if you're playing as Germany, rather than actually using the mechanism that's right there for you to encourage coups, you click through a bunch of events?

I think its fair to say you have scripted event as well as the ability to perform those actions on your own.

The scripted events you want for WW2 imersion. The ability is there to do what is outside the box.

Both these comments ignore the National Focus tree, which is one of HoI4's big innovations. That is the way in which players can set strategy in a historical or non-historical way.
That's out of the realm of possibility for the devs to support all possible scenarios and avenues of approach to the game, its just impossible, the National Focus covers a tiny amount of the possibilities and not even all that could have been possible even if the player decides to go down a semi-historical path, let alone an non historical path.
Therefore having things happen without the need of a scripted event is much more rewarding than the opposite as it allows players to go about stuff the way they want.

There are both events and NFs though I think that the NFs will unlock/lock certain events.

I do wish the generic NF tree was released, I am pretty sure minors will be able to move towards their chosen faction, eventually the minors will be fleshed out and I am sure Iraq will get a NF to push towards the coup.
