What would the tooltip give more than the amount of troops ? Which is also visible next to the unit.

Composition of a stack, in fact just symbols above the flag would be even better so you don't have to hover the mouse. Horse-head silhouettes for cavalry, "HQ" for... guess. Rifles for infantry, a spade for engineers (if they are in the game of course) that kind of thing.

Gold symbols for vets, silver for green, bronze for drafted units...

There are no counters in V2. Just doesnt fit.

So you have to have the giants with their kepis walking around? I hope you don't go ahead and release a DLC after this with counters, cause then I'd lose all faith in this company.

I wouldn't have anything against it if it wasn't for the absurdity of the cartoony scale used for sprites/buildings/etc.

Not saying a "real" scale would make any sense in a grand strategy game; they'd be invisible, but my point stands.

Not to be a language nazi, but they're not really sprites. Sprites are either characters/objects in 2d games or character/object billboards in older 3d games where they didn't have the processing power to use 3d models for them. The box with the unit strength can be called a sprite, not the figurine.

To contribute to the topic, I don't care about having counters in this game. They are great in HOI3 where a lot more info needs to be displayed about the unit, but as said they don't fit in here. Think of the minifigures as counters as well (animated, but nontheless), not a depiction of the actual unit.

and I was just getting used to counters! I was never bothered by either sprites or counters, so it isn't the end of the world for me.

I'd like to see a bunch of different sprites, however. It looks like this will be the case from all the screen shots.

The giants argument strikes me as odd, so these 'giants' you say are unacceptable, but city-sized tiles with NATO symbols on them are ok? :confused:

As a chess-enjoyer it's not far a leap for me to see the sprites as detailed pieces on a board, it is a game afterall. I guess Counters wouldn't really fit this particular board though, even when zoomed out so the map looks like an actual paper map.

Bah I say you give us the option of either or. Or at least make it so counters are modable.

Couldn't agree more. At least the modding option should be preserved. And while we're at it, please add in an option to mod the sprites, too. Vicky 1 - style lines of soldiers feel a lot more satisfying than single tin soldiers - at least to me.

Yes, but I always play with political map on and there counters look better than sprites. I just can't bring myself to looking on that 3d terrain. Too little info and strange feeling. I mean which non-military leader uses terrain map for his decisions, right? :)

Modding counters in could be more difficult than you think..

Mostly because the option needs to be there, and that could easily leave players confused. One way around could be to make the options screen modable.. But I think that more work than just implementing counters as in HoI3.. Which it doesn't seem like they are going to do.

And I think some people take this too hard... Yes, I would like to have counters (of some sort), I even asked for it. But the developers have made a choice, and I trust them to be better at making games than me.. At least for the moment ;)

And lastly: neither sprites nor counters are realistic.. Realistic would in mean practically invisible.

I must say, I am dreadfully disappointed by such a decision.

I intend Victoria 2 to be my first Paradox game, and as I've always been a fan of somewhat old-fashioned tabletop strategy games (pencil & paper style, I'm afraid) I was rather looking forward to using counters.

Nonetheless, I look forward to the game itself with baited breath.

If I remember correctly, the map will be 3D in political mode too. The ground will have turned the national colour, but the trees and the hills are still there.
