I have been playing mostly HoI3 recently, and when I jumped back to EU3 with HTTT, there was something that I didn't especially like.

Sprites..
I liked the way that HoI3 made information directly visible for me, instead of what I am used to in EU3 where the only way to know[1] if a army is massive or a walk-over is to mouse over and read the tooltip. So I'm sitting in EU3 missing my counters.

Now I know that a direct transfer of the counters makes little sense in Vicky2 or EU3, since most armies are mixed with infantry, a bit of cavalry and other units that are in the games. But a different kind of counter could be used, since there is no need for a icon for the unit, it could instead show some statistics.
These statistics could be many things.. Approximate attack, defense and scouting power. Or unit count of different types. I don't know exactly which stats are the most important, but where I fail, others might succeed :)

The counters has already been implemented in the Clausewitz engine, and maybe a design decision is behind the possible removal[2]? And the counters might have to look different and such, to fit the mood of the game[3].

And then I'd like to round of with telling, that I don't think sprites should be removed - some people like them, some people don't. And lastly to the modelers: that their sprites are nice looking, but I'm just more to the number crunching side of Paradox games :)

[1] if there is some setting that I missed :) then I'd like to know... Obviously.

[2] the screenshots just show sprites, but that don't mean that counters has been removed.

[3] just like the HoI3 map was deemed to dark and grey for Vicky2.

Ps. I know it's late to ask for changes, and that Vicky2 might already be in code freeze.

So, any thoughts? :)

Counters would be nice, but not NATO style please.

Nicely drawn 2D counters with indian sepoys and pretty dreadnoughts would make for nice DLC, would it not ?

Yay a counter thread, for us counter lovers to call our own.

Vicky had NATO counters. I sure hope Vicky II has NATO counters.

In the DDs the sprites look awesome, and I may play with them a bit, but once you've gotten over the pretty factor, counters are the only way to play. Simple, sleek and efficient.

For HOI3 I use the counters that are in the DiDay's I.C.E. mod. They are the NATO counters but with a nice little colour drawing on them as well for added flavour. Something like that would be awesome.

Definitely prefer Sprites, if there are any Counters in the game I'll probably just delete them because it's Sprites all the way for me. :D

Only kidding, I do prefer Sprites but like how Sprites turn to Counters when you zoom out in HoI3 for that more strategic look, I'd like it if that happens in Vicky2, along with the birds-eyeing of the map when you zoom out so the Counters won't look odd.

Also hope sprites indicate somehow if they're packing cavalry, dragoons, engineers and guards (actually they may not be in this time round) or HQ's, armor or even air-units. But as this thread is about Counters, I won't say anything more about what I hope for Sprites.;)

Counters at least when zoomed-out HoI3 style please.

In Vicky I you could choose between sprites or counters just like the HoI series.
Counters are one of the reasons I do not play HOI3.
You can choose sprites or counters, unless you don't like the sprites either.

As someone who entered the strategy game world thanks to the likes of Risk and later Civilization, I find counters to be abhorrent.

Counters don't feel right in the Vicky era to me. It takes away some of the flavor and suspension of disbelief, so yay sprites for me.

This isnt a wargame, so the saying goes, so I dont see why there should be counters really.

And in a victorian age game, people want modern pictograms....strange- its hardly fitting with the times. Meh. Whatever I guess.

There are no counters in V2. Just doesnt fit.

So looking at the tooltip is the only way to get information of a (hostile or friendly) army? Or have you been implementing something that could cover my wish?

And in either case, I'll look forward to the game :) it is after all just a nuisance - and not a game breaker.

What would the tooltip give more than the amount of troops ? Which is also visible next to the unit.

Hurray! We sprite-lovers can rejoice!:)
I presume that you must be very very naughty person taking pleasure in other people's suffering. Sprites were sure thing from the start, so I can't think of any other reason for you to celebrate :)
