dwarf fortress, it's quite entertaining if you can get around the UI (even with a tileset)
Tilesets are for the weak (and they don't help at all).

Ok, you win. I have no idea what's going on there. It looks like the Matrix.
Let me read that picture for you:

The left side is the outside world. The yellow is grassy plains, the blue is a river and the grey ~'s in the centre is a road. The 5 by 5 thing with '0' corners is a trade depot and the large area of circles to the south is a massive stockpile of rocks. The omega signals are statues and the crosses next to them are doors. The entire right side is underground. I can spot storehouses, beds, tables, chairs, dwarves, cage traps, forges, other kind of traps, ballistas, etc.

The game designer/SW lead at Introversion said that DF was one of the inspirations for Prison Architect, so I gave it a go... noooo mate, noo. It's not for me; I'd have to put in 10s of hours just to learn how to play it, and I'm more casual than that.

I have put ~20 hours into Dwarf Fortress and I still don't understand how military works. My fortresses just have massively long entrance tunnels filled with cage traps to keep the goblins away.

The best way to do it in my opinion (if you're a purist and want to use the ascii) is start with a good tileset (one that makes sense to you), make a fortress that you have for a decent time and you've gotten to know where stuff is, then take away the tileset. Then what everything is will just click.

It's my go-to game when I've finished another game and don't feel like diving into my backlog. This unfortunately has the effect that the game has been update once or twice with new possibilities added and I will have forgotten the mechanics. Screwing up is part of the fun. I've abandoned quite a few forts due to being at peace with everyone and having nothnig to kill except a few terrors from the deep. It's a very fun game if you are like me and derive most of your fun learning and mastering the mechanics of a game rather than being good at a game.

I have put ~20 hours into Dwarf Fortress and I still don't understand how military works. My fortresses just have massively long entrance tunnels filled with cage traps to keep the goblins away.

Military is fun tho I usually start out the same way until I got a decently equipped and trained military. Thank god they actually train quite well which means danger rooms and such are no longer necessary (danger rooms were a way to train a dwarf to legendary fighter status by keeping them locked in a room with blunt spikes which would rapidly stab at them for a week or so)

Sorry for prolonged OT, but how did you make military work?
