So, this has never happened to me before. I'm playing as king of Scotland. And, suddenly... I'm another member of my dynasty. The kingdom itself no longer exists, and the character I WAS playing is still alive. I didn't lose a war, abdicate, etc. I receive no new messages. Can anyone explain what happened?

Hmm no I cant. Do you have any mods running? Even if not how about a screenshot as I wouldnt mind having a look. Screen shot of both current and former charachter would help the other forumers figure it out better as well.

Uploading the savefiles from before and after to some kind of repository so someone could download/troubleshoot would make things pretty easy. What happened to the kingdom of Scotland afterwards? Did it get absorbed into someone else's kingdom, collapse into vassal states, etc?

Uh oh.. that shouldn't have happened. It appears you've found a glitch in the system.

First time I heard about this though.

That would be a bit strange. Can see it now one day you go to sleep a king and wake up in a forest and your whole country just went POOF! and now your just a peasant.

Does sound glitchy just from what you said but screenshots, save game files would be good. There's also a text log you can access I don't have the pathway for it at the moment but it may shed some light on what occurred as well perhaps???

Edit:

Try going to My Documents > Paradox Interactive > Crusader Kings II > logs > game.txt

may tell you what happened.......maybe, i do have my doubts.

i suppose is has something to do with succession and crown laws - currently i was playing as catholic king of arabia, and married the daugther of the king of sicily. All 3 of his sons died (i wasn't involved) and so my wife suddenly got the kingdom of sicily. But now the funny thing happens: Wife dies, kingdom of sicily is destroyed.

I think if there's no valid heir to the title of a kingdom/empire/duchy, it would be destroyed. However, the issue with femmefatale's bug is that their former player character, the ruling king, was still alive after the title self-destructed.

Femmefatale, did your king marry into the Kingdom of Scotland via a spouse holding the title/claim/heir to the title? Or did you press a claim for your spouse for the title? Was your king's marriage Matrilineal? Just trying to troubleshoot without a pair of savefiles to parse.

Daelix- incorrect. If an independent kingdom/duchy/whatever has no valid heir, a random claimant or courtier takes over. If this happens to a vassal, the liege gets the title. Titles should never be randomly destroyed, they're only destroyed if their holder loses all his provinces through conquest and thereby becomes landless.

OP - are you running any mods?
Do you remember getting any event just prior to this?
What was Scotland's succession law?

'Should'. Although what I witnessed wasn't me, nor of particular interest, so it's possible the inheritor of a poof realm switched their primary title, and it just appeared to poof. The reason I didn't ask OP about succession laws is because, according to them, their King was still alive. Though if it kicked them onto another dynasty member, save bug issues, SOMEthing fired to make the king unlanded.

Did you just load your save and accidentally load in as some one else? Although I don't know why that would make Scotland disappear unless someone revolted before you noticed.

Alright, here's some additional information...

Scotland wasn't absorbed, it basically broke up into its duchies. I had a valid heir, and my succession was primogeniture. No mods running. And my king inherited Scotland through birth.

I actually played it out twice... the first time I had been involved in a revolt, and I wondered if maybe I had hit "surrender" instead of "enforce demands". But, it did it again anyway. I checked the log, and it appears to have happened when my king inherited a barony. Not sure why that would make him unable to rule Scotland as well... Actually, right before inheriting it, I get the message that my king became unlanded. Here's the part of the log the first time around it happened:

[effect.cpp:4971]: 1209.10.13Bey Ridvan of Rayy (552110) exiles (effect) Peksen (559562) [employer = 552110] to Bey Kaiqobad of Mosul (550371)
[messagehandler.cpp:541]: The §Y3rd Revolt against the rule of King Duncan IV of Scotland§! has ended: §YKing Duncan IV of Scotland§! won!
[messagehandler.cpp:541]: §YDuke Malcolm IV of Lothian§! is no longer Guardian of §YPrincess Eva of Scotland§!

And then the log from the second time:

Yeah I'd call it a bug inheriting a Barony shouldn't make you unlanded. That's just goofy.

But glad the log shed a little light into what happened even though it still doesn't make much sense on why it would unland Duncan.

Well, I would definitely submit this as a bug report. Inheriting the Barony should just add it to your demesne. If you have a savefile, like an auto save, from before it happens, I would find a way to make sure that you're not the heir to that barony? Revoking the title should just add it to your demesne and doesn't trigger the title being passed on to an heir.

Definitely a bug. But when you've got this many rules and variables being tracked, odd things happen.

For example, the son and heir of my current queen was imprisoned at one point by a count who wanted title to the duchy. The count--who won the duchy--died. When the heir was released, he killed himself. The text read that Count Halfden had executed Halfden.

Strangest case of bipolar behavior I've ever seen. So like I wrote, those things happen.

LOL ouch, reading that did THIS to my brain. CKII causes so much SMH.
