I am trusting PI on this. I hope they will not fail me. Anyway, I'm guessing every single republic will be playable. Even a non-coastal non-duchy non-christian one, like Cordoba in 1066. You'll just have to CB a coastal town, and once you have it, you can enter the game of building/claiming/destroying trade posts. The interview mentioned gaining piety when attacking infidel republics, remember ? It makes me confident to say we could play every Republic in the game. If by any chance we can't, then I'm done with my love for Paradox Interactive.

Well I am worried, the AI will not play like a human, a human for instance will seek out and try to conquer all other republics. I will be interested to see if they have a stopper in place for this.

Exactly THIS. I want to play as Ancona and Novgorod, not as Venice or Gotland!!!

I don't think it's a coincidence that Russian DLC is due this week, near to the release of the Republics DLC which will make Novgorod playable. They were in fact part of the Hanseatic league though. I think the important thing is to note that while Ancona and Novgorod weren't exactly maritime superpowers like Venice or Ancona, they had the potential to be so. I don't think Paradox will exclude independent Republic counties from Gameplay. Hopefully vassal counties will be included too (we shall have to wait for the Dev Diaries!)

Edit: Sorry, meant Venice and Genoa, not Ancona :blush:

Novgorod was associated with the Hansa as a trade partner, but not a part of it - in fact they eventually kicked all German merchants out of the city, and barred them from entrance.

I can't help but feel that this general concept will be somewhat impotent, though. There is no naval combat in the game, and Paradox have routinely said that they won't add it because it doesn't fit in with the game's engine and other mechanics. Just one example of course, but it's one of the reasons those maritime powers accumulated vast amounts of wealth and is something that can and should be represented by the game and doesn't require naval combat.

There are a few events in the screenshots we have seen already which seem to deal with naval trade and transport. I think it is probably better to simulate it this way, without adding a completely new aspect of the game engine for something that may very well end up being underused.

The Merchant Prince (which I think a lot of people here consider to the the Sevres ideal of a game about merchant republics) also didn't have naval combat, if I remember correctly, with your ships being lost to pirates or to storm being simulated by events and it was fine.

Gotland is great hint that many more Republics have been added so it wouldn't just be Gotland, Venice, Genoa, Pisa and Novgorod which many people seem to fear.

It will be very important for the Republics to show off their naval influence, if not able to engage naval combat.

Isn't there already a duchy of Ancona? So if it starts as a county level, play as somebody else nearby, grant the mayor the duchy, and then load the save you've just created. It's a few extra steps, but it shouldn't prevent you from being able to turn Ancona into a merchant republic.

Well that's useless for multiplayer and for the character creator to boot, not to mention the equivalent of cheating. It would make sense if they just gave Ancona the Duchy title to start with, made them independent of the HRE and Urbino in the HRE still so Ancona couldn't just gobble them up from the start.

They may not have been Venice or Genoa but I think that's the fun of it is trying to turn them into a rival to Venice. Also, from the screenshots it looks like Hamburg is just County level, so looks like we don't get to actually play the Hansa either. Watching Merchant Republics do stuff is about as fun as just putting the game on observer mode, what's the point if we don't get to actually experience anything? The DLC mechanics look great I'm just worried that you'll have like 5 options and not be able to take a smaller or lesser known place to greatness.

I can gather playing a republic is not the same as playing a feudal lord. For example in the republic screenshots all the republics have King level shields not duke level shields even though they are dukes. I have this strange feeling that when your in republic mod a lot of mechanics are defrent from when your in feudal mode. Similar to how things are defrent for Muslims and christens(decadence).
