Novgorod isn't available at 1066 game start right? Thats probably why it isn't mentioned. But if it has venice, pisa, genoa, the hanseatic league and novgorod its pretty much covered the most important merchant republics of the period.
Exactly THIS. I want to play as Ancona and Novgorod, not as Venice or Gotland!!!
I can't help but feel that this general concept will be somewhat impotent, though. There is no naval combat in the game, and Paradox have routinely said that they won't add it because it doesn't fit in with the game's engine and other mechanics. This may well be true and I won't argue with that suggestion, but it does relegate playable republics to simply hoarding gold and trying to maintain their family's candidate for the top job. I'm sure many players will find this fun, but to me it seems something of a fundamental oversight to attempt to represent the rise (and fall) of the likes of Venice, Genoa and Pisa without the one thing that absolutely enabled them to achieve what they did.spartanlemur said:I think the important thing is to note that while Ancona and Novgorod weren't exactly maritime superpowers like Venice or Ancona, they had the potential to be so.
I won't buy The Republic (at least not initially) but I can only hope that the naval mercenaries added in one of the older patches (1.05? 1.06?) have been reworked so as to genuinely benefit Venice, Genoa, the Hansa and the Maghreb Corsairs. Those mercenary fleets should be linked to their respective owners in-game, and there ought to be suitable events dealing with things like Crusader armies. Just one example of course, but it's one of the reasons those maritime powers accumulated vast amounts of wealth and is something that can and should be represented by the game and doesn't require naval combat.
Isn't there already a duchy of Ancona? So if it starts as a county level, play as somebody else nearby, grant the mayor the duchy, and then load the save you've just created. It's a few extra steps, but it shouldn't prevent you from being able to turn Ancona into a merchant republic.
