So, inspired by a recent post about the Lithuanian culture in the Commonwealth, I decided to come up with a basic way to overhaul them.

The idea revolves around the player being able to choose what cultures are accepted (the AI uses the highest percentage of cores to choose them.)

The default limit would be the primary culture and two (maybe three) other cultures you can choose. This could be increased with ideas and traditions, basically, where it currently is -x% accepted threshold, an additional culture that can be accepted would be added for every 10%, so the -20% in the humanist ideas would instead give two more cultures.

Accepted cultures could be added and removed in a tab in the adminstration screen, but would cost 150 administrative power and 100 ducats to change.

This would not affect unions, which still accept all of their culture group. Thanks to Montem for reminding me to add this!

This system would allow nations like Poland to accept Lithuanian, or Britain to accept Irish (I know this isn't strictly historical, but would be easier than sending troops to quell a rebellion every 10 years.)

I personally really like the idea, along with the idea of limits, a few thoughts:

We'd still have cultural unions (I'm guessing you feel the same but dear god can you imagine being a union and not having the union? Madness) and I'd say one or two to start out with cultures accepted.

That being said, you can only choose to accept a culture IF

a)They are in the same culture group as you and you are not a union
b)The culture controls X% of provinces compared to the number of provinces controlled by your PRIMARY culture (Let's say you have 20 English provinces, Irish is 5, or 25% of that, and therefore you could accept it. I was thinking probably about 10-20% in terms of the threshold)

Those were my thoughts, feel free to add/disregard whatever :)

Oh yeah, culture unions stille exist I'll add that, when it comes to having to be in the same group, I think that is handled by culture unions, which most players will be able to get. For the second point, I'd say it is a good idea, depending on the primary culture, if it's Turkish, there are a lot of provinces, while if it's Umbrian, there are very few.

Or perhaps easier, just "Make this culture accepted" button with diplomating cost, working as integrating a vassal (taking up diplo points monthly and requiring a diplomat)? Numbers would vary depending on culture group, percentage of culture in provinces, etc.

What I dislike in the current system, is that it allows for little "roleplay". I'd rather all cored cultures be allowed for acceptance, so even if I have a huge Indian colonial empire with the Netherlands, I can accept Wallonian if i want, even if it is less beneficial from a gameplay perspective. Vica verse, I may want to "prosecute" a lage minority.

I would love this system a lot. The problem is that it benefits some nations more than others. For exampe Burgundy would need 2 accepted cultures (Flemish, Dutch) at the beginning to keep the current balance, Hungary would need one (for Croatian). So if we go with 2, Hungary will accept Ruthenian and have an easier time converting it's orthodox province, which is usually an annoyance.
