The war system isn't perfect now but it's vastly better. You have to balance the value of systems vs how to defend them, you want to claim chokepoints and invest wisely in them, you need multiple fleets, and now we have all the new strategic tools of hyper relays and catapults. The game hasn't shrunk in strategic choice, it's grown.
In way it's funny, that they pushed the hyper lane system, and than they keep adding systems to traverse it faster or just ignore it.

It is a bit funny when you think about it. Though I do think the post 2.0 approach had a much better foundation to build upon than pre 2.0. Three different types of primary FTL was always going to be really hard to balance around. War, trade, expansion, sectors etc all would need to be designed to fit three very different systems. Then on top of that we got extra FTL (like the OG jump drive that had no cool down and was automatically used).

By making hyperdrive the core system that everyone would use as a primary FTL it’s easier to then build exceptions around it.

See, it's even funnier because in terms of planets, single-biome seems to be the norm irl.

Granted, most of the biomes we've seen boil down to various flavors of 'irradiated space rock', but still.

Are you sure about that?

The only thing I miss from 1.0 that I've never really seen replicated since was how in my very first game, the galaxy was broken up into two halves, one half was all big beefy centralized, authoritarian leaning nations with defensive pacts but all refusing to federate further than that, and on the other side of the galaxy, there were four ENORMOUS democracies, and between them this giant field of tiny 1-4 star empires, each of them having been diced up by wars of liberation into vassals and proxy states, and by the mid to late game there was a constant stream of rivalries, war declarations, old empires dying, new empires being founded in wars of liberation, as the four democracies basically engaged in ethics-based proxy wars between all their little semi-vassal states.

other than never seeing anything like that ever again since, everything has been a freaking blast and the changes for the better

We're done - this was a poorly formatted rant to begin with and only went off the rails as things went further.
