I am currently developing an interactive map of the game that runs in your browser. It is not yet ready, but I am throwing the uncompleted prototype here to get some feedback.

And here it is:
http://palvelin.club/~lasokki/stuff/paradoxmap/

The current phase of the project is this:
  • All provinces are parsed from provinces.bmp
    • The gaps that you see are from provinces that consists of multiple landmasses, for example islands. They are my main focus right now.
  • I have a parser for getting default data for provinces
  • The map has two modes, religions and cultures
My intention is to have all the default starting points of the game represented and multiple map modes.

Please do note, that this thing is merely at a proof-of-concept -state and has a horrible, horrible UI. But hey, it kind of works with a phone!

Oh, and in the case you are wondering, I have not yet uploaded the latest map, so try to bear the old one.

Is this a project worth completing? Would you use it, if it had all the map modes and starting dates?

Thanks to blazerboy and Meneth for provoking me to do this!

And to Paradox, please don't sue me, I'm just a poor university student trying to do something useful for once.

Very interesting work. Since CK2 has long load times, I'd definitely appreciate a way to see the map without being in-game.

I'd imagine for multiplayer people would appreciate your interactive map, so they can make their choice ahead of time. As someone who co-owns a CK2 MP group, it's pretty typical that someone will stare at the screen for 5min after they finally load up.

First and foremost, GREAT WORK! Please finish this. And now...

Some thoughts/considerations depending on your drive:
  • Add the total # of holdings to the tooltip, bonus points if you tell us what holdings are built and what holdings are not.
  • Add a note taking feature and make the map save-able. Bonus points if you can make it share-able.
  • Add a tool for determining the travel time between provinces.
Good luck!

Nice job! It would be a cool tool for modders where they can load up their custom maps and see how it all looks without having to fire up the game (which is what I assume they have to do right now).

THIS IS FANTASTIC!

I've always wanted to be able to look at different start maps and ponder future/current game play ideas and having this on the web would eliminate the need to launch the game and let it sit and hog resources while all I do is stare at the map pondering.

Here are my suggestions:

Must Haves: (not really must, unless you want to be worshiped by the CK2 community)

1a) Independent Realms option (in addition to the current Culture/Religion options)

1b) User-Painting/Flagging tool for said independent realms view.

1c) Web cached data to save the Independent realms colors. Give us maybe 6 bookmarks to store 6 different sets of colors.

NOTE: I will say this is much more important and preferred (and possibly less time for you) than to scour each start date and get each starting realm color right.

2) Revert to default position button. At certain zooms (actually, even at max zoom) I can sometimes get lost in the sea or mountains or whatever.

Nice to Haves:

1a) Have a slider for date
1b) Colors for Independent realms at each start date
1c) Export/Import the user painted/flagged map. If you implement this, the colors for default start dates won't even be necessary because I'm sure many people from the community would do this for you and just share the exported colors at diff bookmarks/start date.

2) Bookmarks to view the map at a specific zoom/coords.

Only if you have nothing better to do:
1) Add map color options for County/Duchy/Kingdom/Empire Dejure/defacto

Thank you for the replies! A number of posts gave me good ideas for features - I will figure out which of them are feasible to implement with the current libraries I am using.

Some things that I thought about prioritising:
  • Slider for dates
  • Independent realms
    • Will require some work
  • Shortcut to default position
  • Number of holdings
  • Actual complete map - I'll get to solve some graph or set problems
I had not thought about implementing actual tools to the application, but it would be quite appropriate! I will research drawing tools, searchable provinces and other suggestions you gave to me.

As to modding, I will make instructions on map generation as easy to read as possible.

Whenever I make real progress with this project I will post updates to this thread - they might come weekly or monthly, depending on my mood and work load at the university. This thing was fun to start and thanks to you I got more motivation to make it work.
