The servant ran into Duke Henri's bedchamber, where the duke was relaxing after an evening inspection of the troops, followed by a still-cloaked messenger. "My lord, we have news both great and terrible!" Henri sat up in his bed. "Out with it! The bad news first, if you will." After a moment of trepidation, the pale-faced servant finally spoke: "King Robert has been viciously murdered, by his very son! And now you...you are king!" The servant and messenger knelt in reverence in front of the bed. The new king looked ghastly at the news, and did not speak, but only uttered a few pained sounds. He clutched his chest as all color drained from his face, and fell backwards on the bed.
And that's how William of Normandy became the King of France.
