Hey. So an event just gave me the choice of turning my Ming into a republic. Does anyone know what the conditions were that triggered this event? It is awesome because it got rid of my inward perfection! I'm asking just in case I wanna play as a Republican Ming again in the future. Thanks.

Thanks! So now that I know how to turn Ming into a republic, can someone explain the basic advantages/disadvantages in game mechanics for this government? Thanks.

Broadly speaking:

Advantages: Can pick rulers and upgrade their stats over time (with most kinds of Republic), so you can reliably get good monarch points in a category of your choice. Lots of opportunity to use Revolution and Counter-revolution CB if you took Diplomatic ideas. Plutocratic ideas are available (except Noble Republic). No stability drops for ruler death/replacement. No possibility of bad dynastic outcomes (monarchies can get in trouble if their king dies with no heir or a weak heir). Easy to switch to a Monarchy later (by repeatedly re-electing the same guy, which also means that you will have a super monarch for a while).

Disadvantages: Basic stats for a new ruler are weak (4/1/1). Re-electing your ruler damages your RT, which can be hard to sustain. Low RT is much nastier than low legitimacy and harder to repair. Republic-specific events are mostly bad. No dynastic game (although Noble and Dutch Republics can form Royal Marriages). Aristocratic ideas are not available (except Noble Republic).

Considering you still get the effects of the factions, there are no real drawback to this government. The only thing about this event is that the tech date required is 1661 and the event has an 183 year MTTH after achieving that tech requirement.

Mechanics: Every time there's an election you choose to either stick with your current ruler, which gives him +1 to everything but costs you 10 republican tradition, or picking a new ruler, who will have 1 stat at 4 and the others at 0. High Tradition lowers your revolt risk, low tradition increases it. Falling below 50 tradition causes noble (ie reactionary) rebels to appear, falling below 20 may collapse you into a Republican Dictatorship.
Pros: No worrying about legitimacy, no more getting stuck with terrible leaders for ages, lowered RR with high republican tradition, Plutocracy idea group is pretty sweet
Cons: no more 6/6/6 leaders in your future, dealing with Republican Tradition means that either mediocre leaders or high RR are going to be a problem, no royal marriages (which also means no diplo vassalising)

It gets rid of inward perfection but also gets rid of the faction system. Does that make it not worth it? It means I'll have to reset my stability to -3 twice. Once for Republicanism, and once for Westernization. Is it possible to keep Westernization on standby, and then once the Republican switch event pops up, trigger Westernization right before accepting the Republican switch choice for the event?

IIRC, this is the ONLY event in the game in 1.3 that allows you to keep the faction system, provided you never westernize before this event triggers. The order should be choosing this event to switch out of Celestial Empire, then get back up to 3 stab for westernizing.

That is no longer true. Republicanism eliminates the faction system (as well as inward perfection). I think PI must have hard-linked the two events, so that you can no longer eliminate inward perfection without also eliminating the faction system. Their decision makes sense, as a faction system Ming without inward perfection had already proven to be overpowered as of 1.2

I'm not a fan of that change, because this game is supposed to allow us to embrace hypotheticals. And hypothetically, a Republican China with an innovative, inquisitive, and outward looking society should indeed be "overpowered". This blind embrace of balance at all costs is severely detrimental to the exploration of geostrategic dynamics in a historically hypothetical world.

Um, it does not. It just eliminates inward perfection.

Confirmed.
I just started a new game as Ming, triggered event with console and even waited until the start of the next month so all the ticks happen.
Inward Perfection and Mandate of Heaven are removed. Factions (and their bonuses) remain - incidentally, since you start with bureaucrats (fitting really, considering the event), this made all buildings cost 0 gold.

Oh shit you're right. So does Westernizing after switching to Republic allow me to still keep the factions then? If so, is this WAD? Or a loophole that they'll likely patch out.

Yes, no its not WAD, and, they may or may not patch it out.

What's MTTH?

Mean time to happen.

The average length of time for an event to fire. It may fire before or after - or never at all. But, on average, it should be the MTTH.
