For anyone who's interested, I've written an event chain to allow a newly unified Germany to annex Austria Proper and make Hungary, &c, independent. Here's how it works.

In 1873 You'll get an event asking whether or not you should claim Austria. The AI almost never will. If you don't, nothing happens. If you do, Austria can either declare war on you for insulting them, or ignore you. They'll usually ignore you.

If they ignore your claims, you can choose whether to back down and lose some prestige, or declare war.

Either way the war starts (if it starts), if Germany controls the whole of Austria Proper (that is, modern Austria) before 1885, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, and any other Balkan nations Austria has will declare independence. If Italy exists, they'll snatch their cores, otherwise Lombardia and Venezia declare independence.

A short while afterward Austria surrenders and Germany inherits. Germany also adds all of Austria as core provinces.

A few weeks to a few months later Germany gets an event to decide what to do with Southern Poland/Western Ukraine, because it's useless, undefendable, and looks dumb sticking out like that. Germany can sell it to Russia for cash or give it to Hungary in exchange for vassalization. Giving it to Hungary seriously pisses off the Russians, and since Germany's badboy is up from annexing Austria they may attack.

Do whatever you like with these events. I made them for myself and just thought I'd share.

To install, put the text below into a file called anschluss.txt. Then place it in the victoria\db\events folder. Finally, open victoria\db\events.txt file and add to the bottom this line:

And that should do it. You'll have to start a new campaign to get the events, though; they won't work in a previous savegame.

Germany gets all provinces that are German-majority, so Bozen goes to them and that other one to the South (Torun?) goes to Italy. Yes, Germany does annex Bohemia and Moravia, though I mean to add an event to allow one to choose whether to release it or not. Finally, I agree this event should probably hurt relations with other nations like UK. I'll probably post a new version later today.

One thing I like to do after annexing Austria is to DOW Slovenia and Trieste or Croatia, and get myself a corridor allowing access to the Agean. Then I can attack Egypt and eventually control the Suez Canal.
