An Empire of Gold - A Spanish EU3/Vicky2 AAR
Coat_of_Arms_of_Spanish_Monarch.png

What is this?

This will be an AAR running from 1399 to 1936, and perhaps beyond. I will write in a mix of styles.

Why choose Spain?

I have chosen Spain as it gives an interesting oppurtunity to see how history might be different if Spain kept its position as the worlds leading power, instead of slipping into decline.

House Rules:

No stupid conquests. (Castillian Novgorod, Spanish Siberia, Iberian Mongolia)
No stupid use of CB's. (Taking non CoT provinces with a trade dispute for example)

If a province is not Catholic, then it must be converted as soon as possible.

The Capital must always have the maximum number of buildings possible.

If I inherit a PU that I dont think Spain could or should keep (Austria or Sweden for
example) then I will take any plausible provinces and release the rest as a vassal/independent nation.

I will edit the savegame after conversion to Vicky2, altering pops around as I see fit and tidying borders. I may also annex some smaller nations to larger ones, to create better gameplay and fix errors.

I will try and control as much Gold as possible.

Once the Reformist dogs start their own religions, I will crush them wherever possible.

If the Pope is at war with a non Catholic nation, and he is in trouble, I will do whatever I can to help him. (If I notice)

Sorry about the triple post, but my OCD brain demands neatness.

Hope you guys enjoy the read. Ill post the first update some time tonight.

Volume I

Chapter One - The Reconquista

It was in the year 1399 that the events which were to take Castille from an insecure middleweight Kingdom to a position of influence across the whole world began.

Castille was a regional power, and whilst certainly able to pose a threat to the other nations of europe, was by no means a major player.

2011-11-09_00017.jpg
At the time, Castille was highly centralised compared to most nations. The Aristocracy held sway over most of the power, but the Merchants had a minor influence on decisions. The average Castillian man has some basic rights, but was still second to the state when the 2 came in to conflict.

2011-11-09_00018.jpg
Castille had a strong economy, although at the time many areas were ineffecient. At the time, most of the effort of scholars was directed towards administration and governance.

2011-11-09_00019.jpg
1399 marked a change in the balance of power in Castille. For the first time, 2 of the Kings 3 closest advisors were open to the idea of Castille gaining wealth through more than just traditional means. Whilst all still noblemen, this worried much of the Aristocracy, so that when the King decided to increase his authority, some rose in open rebellion.

2011-11-09_00023.jpg
The rebellion was quickly crushed, and the surviving Nobles imprisoned for their treason. This day marked the start of a steady progression towards Absolutism in Castille, with the King uttering the famous phrase 'One faith, one nation, one leader!' (OOC: Prize for the person to get this quote)

2011-11-09_00022.jpg
The King also took steps to increase relations with other nations. His sons and daughters were arranged marriages with fitting partners from other important houses.

2011-11-09_00020.jpg
The King also decided to pass an act to control the import, export and sale of Gin, so that he could fund his future conquests on the Iberian peninsula.

2011-11-09_00024.jpg
In 1399, the final stage of the Reconquista began. Spanish knights and sergeants poured across the border into Granada. Despite some upsets such as the sack of Cadiz, the Crusade was a success and the heathen scum were quickly annexed by the righteous Spanish. Missionaries were quickly sent to convert the scum lest they be condemned to hell for their sinful ways.

2011-11-09_00030.jpg
The war quickly escalated however, bringing in more and more Muslim states to try and rival the power of Castille. Eventually, the Ottomans themselves were drawn into the fight. After numerous battles in which the skill of the Castillian navy was proved, the Muslim powers were begging for peace.

2011-11-09_00035.jpg
Together they agreed that they would agree not to pursue territorial expansion against Byzantium or Venice, and that they would pay a large sum in tribute to Castille.

2011-11-09_00029.jpg
During this conflict, the Kingdom of France attacked Naples over the Duchy of Provence. Castille, not wishing to dishonour an ally, accepted the call but played little part in the struggles. With the army and navy busy against the Muslim dogs, there was not time to fight the French also.

2011-11-09_00032.jpg
On the 16th of January, 1402, the Kings of France and Castille met to sign a White Peace and end the conflict between their nations.

This could be a lot of fun if played right. Spain is a powerful nation.

Ps: things might be clearer to see on politcal mapmode for screens. All these mountains and grasslands make me dizzy!

Ive always liked the terrain mapmode in DW myself, but if you guys want I can take a political map screeny each update if it will help.

Also, Skyrim will delay the next update for a while, but I promise it will be very exciting when it comes!

Strangely enough, not long ago (i.e. 3 or 4 months ago) I was thinking about doing something like this - playing as Spain from EU3 through Victoria 2 and finally through Darkest Hour up to 1964.
