I agree @AvatarOfKhaine - alas I think I have only had them once myself ever. Bad luck I guess.

Certainly an object lesson in how it can all go wrong.

Same here. I think I've seen it once, and I'm not sure I even competed the chain in that game.

Early Expansion, III.

The first contact with the alien races were so far very different from expectations. In theory, the administration of the Empire was prepared to grant them full diplomatic rights, including their own embassy on Berlin. Various institutions issued regulations how to treat various requests from non-Humans (trade, education, research, medical services etc.) the moment ancient Xelteks or 'Giants' of Regensburg started to communicate with Humans. The Kaiser, High Command and the Church were locked in never ending debates whether to grant them citizenship or not. But races encountered so far had little use for it. The unpredictable ancients first sent delegations acting like visitors in zoo, to cease communication completely for the many years. The Giants at least showed an interest to serve in the military and as a workers for an exotic food and jewelry to improve their bland lives. Even the Kaiser couldn't deny their usefulness, each individual strong and powerful like several divisions of infantry. The primitive races encountered later were protected from conquest, although studied and influenced in various social experiments deemed necessary for Human science, as well as for their own good, since many of them were fairly pacifist and naive cultures. First contacts remained full of surprises still, when Human exploration vessels found their counterparts from so called 'Maweer Caretakers' civilization.

IagYeOc.png

The construction of the ship differed greatly at the first sight: whenever it entered star system, solar sails supported sublight engines powered by a thorium-based reactor, to also conserve enough energy for new activation of hyperdrive. While safer, energy-conserving design, it wasn't very efficient one, easily outmatched by the both civilian and military ships built in Berliner shipyards. What really puzzled the minds of Human diplomats and scientists was the ship's complete ignorance of any hails. Radio signals, laser beams, subspace channels, everything remained silent. In a last attempt to gain their trust, and against the wish of the Kaiser, a few data probes with non-classified informations were launched towards their vessels. A Human history, an examples of Earth fauna and flora, art including music pieces etc.

ebgy5cZ.jpg

The Maweer race had limited transformation abilities for the purpose of necessary diplomacy or survival.

The first two data packets were rejected, but the race soon calling themselves 'Maweer' accepted the last one. After a few days of silence, a shuttle was dispatched from their ship. By that time, the highest-ranking member of imperial military here was the Korvettenkapitan Karl Graf von Lehndorff, who just arrived to observe the situation. The official transcript of the meeting showed, how it went a little different from original intention to establish a cordial relations:

[metallic sounds]
"Soldier, you may wait outside."
[clicked heels]
"Yes, sir!"
[metallic sounds]
"And now, let me introduce myself..."
"Ah, another Human name. More colours of your cloth. More symbols. Why do you so insist to differ among yourselves?"
[walking sounds]
"Glad you already know our language so well. How should I call you, then?"
"It doesn't matter, because it's the last time we see each other. We have no interest to deal with self-destructive barbarians."
[coughing]
"That's a little harsh view. Entire existence is full of struggle. Not just our planet, but the space around us proves that."
[rustling sounds]
"What we know now, that one of such civilization destroyed our planet's environment. If we weren't blessed by sentience not long after their miserable demise, it would be dead world by now."
[sigh]
"Does it amuse you, Human?"
"No, I just merely wonder, if you realized you should be thankful for their 'miserable demise'. I assume they created the conditions under which you very exist and thrive."
[rustling sounds]
"So, the entire Universe exists just for useless violence?"
"No. It exists for us both, proved by the mere fact we are here together. 'The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands'."
"That's from main holy text of your religion, is it? Very convenient. You may hide behind your ancient texts, but it can't change your destructive nature, Human."
"'Without him nothing was made that has been made'. We are here, your precursors are not. If they have turned against God's will, he still gave them the means for their salvation — just as He did for us. They perished, but your people redeemed their sins, clearly, as I see the living beauty of your planet in yourself."
[rustling sounds]
"No Human will ever step on the Garden. We don't want to catch your violent disease."
[metallic sounds]
[sigh]
[walking sounds]
"Final evaluation: Noble, intelligent, but stubborn beings. They clearly deserve protection in a galaxy which doesn't share their sentiments. That sounds precise enough."

7jRtl6D.png

Few years after Maweers revealed themselves, star charts indicated they will soon exhaust their room for expansion, locked between two militarily too powerful forces and the only other hyperspace route led right into heart of Galactic Empire - this of course later guarded by the 1st Fleet stationed in Brandenburg system at all times to never leave Empire's capital without protection - with the exception of the most dire circumstances.
Meanwhile, the research vessels continued with their astonishing discoveries, especially the creatures able to live in the space vacuum, cosmic radiation, solar winds or interstellar travel.

tswlnt6.png

Some creatures proved aggressive, some peaceful, as one would have expected. In any case, Reichsflotte issued a standing order to never attack these fascinating God's creations, unless it was absolutely necessary, like when they attacked first or aggressively blockaded systems useful for the Empire.

cAeDwHE.png

On the contrary, scientific community, military and Church alike craved for more knowledge about these living miracles. Usually aggressive 'Amoebas' of uncanny shapes and abilities will be used one day as warhorses launched by the imperial battleships, much like Giants from planet Regensburg will crush countless enemies on the planetary surfaces.

o3r5qRP.png

Mere observations of the Amoebas proved to be of immense value: manoeuvrability of corvettes improved and advanced tactical simulations quickly became the commonplace. It will take a much more time to breed and train the animals themselves, but their usefulness didn't end here - regenerating armor or energy distribution were also among the technological applications coming from their research.

jAtIXT2.png

In the middle of such fascinating new discoveries about universe, a reclusive neutral races contacted the Empire, offering their services.

txSzRV4.png

Living on the space stations usually orbiting a Black Hole or dangerous anomaly, and maintaining their autonomy, they will prove cooperative with the imperial efforts. Startling visual similarities of the Velutarians were questioned, but regarded as another cosmic coincidence called 'God's sense of humour' by the less pious members of military - after contacts with them showed crucial physical differences from the Humans, such as figure, organ structure or very slow ageing process.
Second moreless peaceful species living in the void of Space were the 'Artisans' of Belmacosa species, furtherly confirming how intelligent Plantoids are just as usual to find as Mammalians. Despite their casual manners, their bastions were well-defended and their artists incredibly skilled in every branch, be it music or architecture.

84jWlBT.png

Unfortunately, along with these new and very useful contacts, a much more dangerous cultures were met: a fallen warriors, which descended into barbarism and chaos, calling themselves the 'Provalguvors'. A fungoid race thriving in dark, cold and wet places, their space stations and ships commandeered by many clans and cults provided just enough shelter they need to terrorize the rest of the galaxy.

9VMHdh0.png

Their territory positioned not far from the Brandenburg system will remain both threat and opportunity for the Empire and the Reichsflotte: the violent species often accepted border skirmishes, thus allowing Human pilots to be permanently trained in the crucible of real battles. Sometimes, though, the Provalguvors will demand a tributes and ransoms, not mentioning supplying Human criminals and deserters, who will form many pirate groups, crippling the supply lines from time to time.

4LJJZoF.png

Later, individual Provagulvors, either from necessity or for the profit, will help the Empire as mercenaries and advisors, as they roamed the galaxy for much longer time.

oOQhGyB.jpg

Even the quick scans the Human vessels were able to make, before emergency activation of hyperdrives, showed a thousands of space stations and derelicts. Some of them showed energy signatures, some didn't. Some were inhabited by a five lifeforms, some of them had over 50 000 life signs.

Any direct military action was out of the question. The species was far from united, but even in the state of technological and societal decay they surpassed fledgling Human military in every aspect, making odds impossibly low for many decades. Only with future development of cruisers the Reichsflotte will be able to properly secure the borders.

8zBhOYX.png

This was but a small portion of a galaxy, proving the vision of Kaiser Friedrich I.: anything or anyone useful is justified in a view of grand plans, whilst Humans can truly depend only on themselves. Hostile, indifferent or corruptible alien civilizations won't certainly help to make galaxy safe, just like that. Galaxy, where everyone knows their place.

Abz95Wp.png

It will be a long journey to reach this goal, to make things better for all, whether they see it or not.

eFXpavt.png

Life in the galaxy is not easy. Ancient and arrogant beings to the galactic south, isolationist, fearful hatemongers to the west and raiders to the north.

The uh .. mushrooms .. look like uncomfortable neighbours.

Early Expansion IV.

The milestone between the initial exploration of the galaxy and prelude to the first intergalactic wars is debatable. Most of the historians recognize the combination of following: necessary extermination campaign against massive space creatures, demarcation of border systems and development of trade, along with starting pirate activity. The Imperial Navy, called the Reichsflotte, at first consisted of small crafts, soon followed by the larger and more powerful designs. There lies the tradition used in future generations, that every pilot, sailor or marine must serve on smaller crafts first, to make sure everyone knowss how to fight with them or cooperate the battle with them. This will prove as invaluable advantage over star nations in wars to come.

77pMQvx.png

Sadly, the very first battle the forces of Humanity won, was fought against another Humans. Regardless of them being traitors and criminals, they were still Kaiser's subjects and their deaths were seen as an utter waste, in a light of so hostile galaxy, which may crush their kind at any time.

dWMVJ41.png

After their defeat, the pirates mostly chose either suicide or the exile, if possible, as was the usual case. Pirate fleets will be assembled from time to time repeatedly in this and next century, but always destroyed at once by the Reichsflotte, usually by the 1st Fleet from the Brandenburg system (protecting new Human homeworld) or 2nd Fleet from the Preussen system (guarding the wormhole and the borders on the Outer Rim).

Oaz9jGA.png

Nevertheless, even the bitter conflicts with these renegades and space creatures taught the lessons about still much unknown space warfare. Security systems, armor or tactics were developed piece by piece, before the Kaiser Friedrich and his admirals contemplated any strike against alien powers, surrounding the Human living space.

VXXPcou.jpg

The Human pirates were the first enemy of the Reichsflotte, quickly expanded into 1st, 2nd and then 3rd Fleet - to patrol systems closest to the Core.

But just when Human engineers and soldiers solved one threat, unpredictable universe another way to challenge them and add another threats to survival of Mankind.

Ev8PFeC.png

For the men of the cloth, the 'Void Clouds' were fragments of God's power of creations or fallen angelic beings residing in cosmos. Perhaps even spirits of the long death peoples, now trapped in physical realm, unable to escape. They shuddered at the thought, that demons or Devil himself may await for them just as close as these incomprehensible beings or raw cosmic power - perhaps protecting them from the things beyond the event horizon. Better for the Humans to never know.

rcyDn52.png

After all, there were enough concerns less arcane and more troubling for the moment. Soon after the discovery of Provalguvors, another deranged species contacted them not very far from Maweer space. Unlike the Provalguvor, who retained at least fragments of religious order or military code, Glost-Werhenis fell much deeply into pit of barbarism and hedonism. Immoral and cruel species of mercenaries, pirates and cannibals held nothing sacred.

vfkb7aV.png

It didn't help, that they were obviously a Mammalian species, first to found so far, developed as apex predators on their long destroyed homeworld, destroyed long time ago by themselves. They became the contant reminder, what will happen to any civilization using uncontrolled violence and bloodbaths just for the sake of enjoyment or ideology.

k8WeN2Q.png

Other alien civilizations, although much less violent ones, didn't raise the hopes up too much: the so called 'Free Union' held deep contempt towards anything perceived tyrannical, despite the obvious fact, that Human interstellar state was more a meritocracy than some kind of despotism.

LOMd3jY.png

Ironically, the first truly friendly relations, both in trade and diplomacy, were established with a Korinth Cartel, which was, in a nutshell, a large criminal organisation, which took over the legal government long ago, and pretended to be a bunch of honest merchants and industrialists. On the other hand, they knew their chances against any major military power and cared about bussiness deals like the true opportunists they were, pleasant and useful as possible.

FPB1HIx.png

Close to the Galalactic Core, the Human explorers were contacted by the incredibly ancient machines, much older than previously met Xelteks: horrified at first, Humans were astonished by the massive Ringworld built by the Ancient Caretakers, supposedly built to protect organic sentient life against unknown, probably millions of years long dead threat, as explained by the Curators. Their theory seemed likely: just like in case of other ancient constructions found in the galaxy, sometimes still active and highly dangerous, they were remnants of some ancient conflict, constructed by the likely long dead creators, whoever they were.

FcPWULB.png

The enigmatic guardians of the Core, the 'Model-16', as they referred to themselves contantly, will occasionally contact organic species with strange or stranger 'requests', the both Curators or Xelteks advised to respect, unless the species possessed the military power necessary to resist the ancient machines, presumably destroyed many times before, hence the number '16', as hinted by older races.

b5kyXTf.jpg

The so called 'Custodian Matrix' was, supposedly, a creation of ancient race to act as the Guardians against unknown, but 'greatest possible' threat to organic life.

But the closest danger was found inside the Human space itself, as mentioned above: the wormhole, the real intergalactic pathway to unknown star system, not a mere unstable rift, pulsated inside the inhabited Preussen system, and no one knew yet, where is the other side and who lives there. The place of future 'Battle of Trinary Star', which will change the course of Human history.

4jP5GqD.png

The most important finding by the end of initial exploration of the galaxy, was the existence of at least dozen other habitable worlds and many more valuable mining planets, which allowed rapid production of new warships and space stations. Therefore, there were enough resources within Human reach to build and constantly improve defenses without necessity to provoke conflicts too soon.

vb9l6zV.png

Besides the vicious hunt for resources and colonies, there was also complicated and not fully solved question of alien subjects living within the Human space. Of course the Berlin and other planets will always contain the bigoted supremacist groups within their respective populations, but the mere existence of alien races was a proof of greater divine plan - despite the fact it were the Humans, who now had a holy purpose in this chaotic, lawless Galaxy.

om1Mfh9.jpg

The culture found on the planet contained many spiritualist traditions, but it's pacifist inclinations had to be corrected.

Despite their primitive looks, the Uriy had some unique characteristics as the species as much as the people's society. They were Mammalians who shared their bodies with symbiotic fungi, at first thought to be parasites, but it needed only one specimen to prove it's not the case: in fact, it happened naturally, as the planet's lifeforms were closely intertwined with each other. Primitive mammalians, plants and fungi cooperated on Uriy bodies just as same as planetary animals and plants did.

Some interesting discoveries in the cosmos.

Internal developments, I.

The strategic position of what soon will be called Human space, was not envied by the other galactic powers. Not at all. With unpredictable ancients and savage nomads surrounding it's borders, it's civilization lived in a state of war for generations to come. Expansion soon became secondary priority. Colonies resembled military bases and barracks from the beginning, with children swearing daily oaths to the Kaiser. In order to create a fortified living space in the Galaxy, able to withstand anything, it was not only expected but mandatory to have as many chidren as possible, while conscription was replaced by universal military training for all citizens. These policies not only changed each planet into a fortress with bunkers and academies all around planet, but also guaranteed the most talented citizens were always found to later join the Reichflotte or alternatively, the Marines (Marineninfanterie). This strengthened resolve didn't appear over night, of course, and had more than one reason.

GqE9o32.jpg

Time capsules, beacons and memorials were often the only reliable data sources about lost galactic civilizations.

On many occasions, the galactic nations lost in ancient times offered numerous invaluable historical examples of galactic struggles. Like so called 'Lorenz's Desk'. It contained a well-written record of apocalyptic war with all-consuming cyborgs which enslaved half of the galaxy to their monstrous machine intelligence, using nanomachine bombardments as much as subtle brainwashing devices. Many races fell without a single shot fired and remaining major powers in the galaxy joined forces in a long attrition war, which ended only by a daring invasion into middle of their space, where multiple stars were turned into supernova. This deadly blow allowed the alliance to gain upped hand, with the final battle fought only two systems away from Berlin. Not all records were grim as this one, but they did tend more than often to describe warfare and sacrifices made by peoples long dead and so far also forgotten.

OoQc1Gm.png

All of them represented constant fight for survival against the horrors of the galaxy: stories about individual warriors or history of star nation or the record of deadly war of annihilation or vile civil wars. The most debated one, which inhabitants of Berlin soon knew most intimately, was history of Irassians: a warlike species of Mammalians, which dominated roughly the same part of galaxy. Although it will take generations before the full picture of their downfall will be revealed, on many occasions, relics from 'Irassian Concordate' showed weaknesses of their rule: numerically and physically inferior to client races, they relied on sheer force of firepower and superior technology, embodied in their powerful Navy. So when the deadly pathogen called 'Javorian Pox' spreaded across their colonies, their star dominion fell almost immediately. Client races started rebellions and the Irassian fleets, no longer with logistic support, ceased to exist soon afterwards - after fierce, but short retaliation against the presumed conspiracy.

k3c7Ja3.jpg

Derelict vessels on the planetary surface were usually in very poor condition, but indicated more precisely the more recent activity of alien empires.

With useful datas, derelicts and texts, of course, came more grim remains of lost empires: dead bodies of soldiers and civilians floating in the space, flying forever in the void, unless burning in an atmosphere of once strategically important worlds. Their personal belongings often told better story about the dead race than any monument: diaries, logs or photos made clearer picture, how these people lived. Particularly sad was the fate of advanced, but militarily weak species, which ended enslaved and not much later extinct - only because they believed in pacifism and refused to construct battleships or planetary defense grids. So when the enemy invaded their homeworld, the population refused to fight, which was considered the worst crime in the universe. Such absurd stories further reinforced the imperial policies about cautious, but firm expansion.

C3SeEPa.png

In fact, this mentioned story too much reminded the path of Maweer, with the same isolationist and passive policies, which must same lead to their demise one day. In their ignorance, their own transport vessels were slow, unarmed and with minimal shields only against space debris and small meteors. More and more often, Reichsflotte's patrol ships had to save them from imminently deadly situations with no gratitude expressed.

gYXU09s.jpg

The alien and human pirates didn't target only imperial bases and supply lines: civilian vessels of neutral powers were also considered a legitimate targets.

The only exception was the case of returned shipment of minerals, after Maweer ship's accident in asteroid belt, which resulted in death of it's crew. Whatever they thought about Humans, their Empire was the space of law and order - the truth which had to be thrown to the stoic or outright arrogant plantoid faces.

Wl039yb.png

With historical records and political map of the galaxy filled more every day, the universities of Berlin continued with just same important research, finding a ways to understand the life itself. This goal was beyond the mere academic curiosity, as it could open ways for more efficient colonization, with the first leads to possibility of terraforming, now within reach of Human science.

MXwxGLo.png

Too many candidates for colonization were unfortunately found only barely habitable. The colonists which came from Earth preferred the temperate climate, but this was true for their descendants less and less every new generation. Natural ability of Humans to quickly adapt, boosted with rudimentary genetic engineering, made cold mountains and deep taigas of Berlin more comfortable to it's people - so the life of Berliners on desert planets were far from pleasant. The probably worst option was the world named fittingly 'Moskau': the irradiated Dead World, only two systems from Berlin itself.

syTKRas.jpg

Typical landscape of Berlin. The Human preference of mountainous and colder planets remained unchanged for centuries.

The Bayern system, however, and it's third planet soon renamed 'Regensburg', was therefore considered a Crown Jewel amongst the new Human colonies - largest planet in the imperial space, offering less dangerous environment than Berlin, aside from it's titanic species of 'Giants'. Members of these species proved as extremely useful assets, as was already mentioned. It's necessary to add, that Kaiser's officers didn't take any chances with them - a formidable contingent of imperial conscripts was prepared, if they reacted in unfriendly way, as this planet was too valuable to endanger it's development.

61DrMr9.png

This initial wave of colonization, unfortunately, overstretched Berlin's available resources and manpower to the point that world with lower priority often needed extra support to keep the productive pace of extracting new raw materials or allowing food exports, making colonies self-sufficient in short time. With the Kaiser Friedrich often being the one behind such orders, sending convoys of reserve supplies wherever needed according to his judgment, some considered local councils redundant and called for more centralization of power. This was, ironically, opposed by the Kaiser most fiercely, as he considered it inefficient and rigid. The tradition, he explained, called for independent officers and officials, able to quickly resolve local difficulties, in both peace and war times.

595dDzH.png

Meanwhile, the Uriy race, unaware of living within the Human space, started to change their society according to design of social scientists, observing the planet from orbit. Various Uriy city-states and tribes were swept away by pursuit of knowledge and power through military might. Though considered esthetically unpleasant sight by the Humans, they were clearly an intelligent species with a lot of potential as future Kaiser's subjects, already in greatest debt, after destruction of asteroid which could ruin their fragile civilization as easily as any other species not so enlightened like Humans.

tjoO8fW.png

If the 'Giants' of Regensburg could be integrated to the imperial structures, it was thought, then any sentient species could. That doesn't mean it didn't include many challenges to Human scientists - on the contrary, there were many failed attempts to make titanic species interested in any way. Half of them were more than five thousand years old and used nothing close to verbal communication. There were also no signs of communication between them, except occasional physical touch, when they met literally by accident, with no other visible reaction. The success must be considered a lucky accident as well.

FMGurX1.png

The ancient ruins on the planet finally offered the answers, which led to success of the difficult research: although containing never translated dead language, the pictograms showing various devices with alien operators - obviously using radio signals to communicate with titanic lifeforms! Various operators then tried to use different frequencies and different approach, using German texts or Morse code. At first, nothing happened. The Giants seemed oblivious. Then, in a two days, they answered in Morse code. It went as following:

"Who are you?"
"We are Humans."
"What do you want?"
"We want peaceful relations with you."
"Another Starborn? It has been only millenias since the previous ones proved disturbing and chaotic."
"We are not them. Just tell us what you need."
"Calm. Peace. Order"
"Our goals are same, then. The stars are chaotic, indeed. It needs order. I am only afraid that peace can't be maintained all the time."
"Perhaps, Human. Perhaps some of the Young Ones may accompany you. We Elders, however, want to be left alone."
"Then it will be as you say. We welcome you in our Galactic Empire."

It's necessary to add, that 3 days passed before each answer.

xs6uxVe.jpg

The Human scientists discovered a way to communicate with Giants through ancient ruins of mysterious species which didn't originate on the planet. This led to best accepted theory, supported by hints made by enigmatic titanic race, that unknown species were survivors from now barren planet beyond the system. Only to made later a grievous mistake in communication with local species. Or in their foolishness tried to get rid of them, without proper forces.

Not long after achieving such astonishing milestone in galactic diplomacy, the Reichslotte had to face it' first serious challenge: with pirate fleets crushed within the borders of Human space, the criminals tried to operate from beyond, preying on alien transports - or imperial ships bold enough to leave it's protected systems, to find lucrative opportunities or carrying our various research pursuits in the deep space. None was highlighted as much as 'Operation Luxion'.

Fyb5xtk.png

The case was exceptional due to direct command of Kaiser Friedrich I., who left Berlin to visit newly established colonies, under protection of the 1st Fleet, which was freshly refitted and replenished after exhausting and lengthy campaign to destroy spaceborn threats and multiple pirate bases. After the matter was took into his hands, it was obvious what approach will follow the knowledge about criminals thinking they are beyond imperial justice and order.

8cy3VsN.png

Due to pirates being as daring as incompetent, due to fact of captives communicating with the 1st Fleet entire time, the Kaiser's forces needed only weeks to reach the accursed system, led by the signal transmitted from the asteroid base.

2K1hlbS.png

When the pirates heard from comms the cold voice full of contempt, 'This is Kaiser Friedrich of the Reich. Surrender, or be destroyed', they knew to have no choice but fight to the death. Quite few of them experienced the harsh hand of imperial justice and how unforgiving it is, forged by the hands of the Kaiser, Church and military officers.

fo5e5S5.jpg

Surviving footage showed, that traitors fought each other during the battle, some of them even helping the hostages in vain attempt to receive pardons.

The fleet, nominally under the command of Admiral Zimmermann, annihilated the pirates without a single loss. Although tempted to make an exception, the Kaiser ordered no harm towards the life pods with the survivors.

2fF1M9G.png

The first priority, after all, was the minimize the chance of harming the captives from civilian merchant ship of Luxion.

pv2EE2x.png

Fortunately, the survivors acted in heroic and resourceful ways, the true examples of imperial loyalty and courage.

Xi4VBb5.png

With the captives freed, now it was time to deal with remaining pirates.

hPsLBhM.jpg

Typical imperial prison colony consisted of underground facility and highly radioactive, toxic or explosive ore to mine, with entire operation ran by prisoners themselves. If it's production didn't meet the expectations, Reichsflotte reduced prison's food or oxygen rations.

There still remained few questions unanswered. A very disturbing ones, in fact, with clues leading to high echelons of young Empire's bureacracy.

I've never had a successful ending to the Ransomeer mission line.

I had usually luck there, but sometimes, the Ransomeer system spawned ridiculously far away.
With titans, its opposite, I always try to recruit them, but it usually backfires.

Whoo wee the story looks good. I do have to ask what shipset are you using?

Could be worse, i got the Grand Herald early on, like second dig site i found.

He was like the only option to have nice unique ships. Besides I found SW and WH40k ships made by others of much lower quality (Empire at War graphics level).

Heh, the worst surprise was campaign where i first got insane probe attacking me no matter what i said, and then two only possible ways blocked by angry crystals.

Internal developments, II.

For a more materialist powers in the galaxy, Galactic Empire showed surprisingly high level of scientific development than they would expect from religious people the Humans were considered. After all, first new building on every colony was a Cathedral, around which a new city was built only later. Humans also used their holy texts and quotes made by Saints from Old Earth very often, even during most mundane tasks of merchants. The militarist side of Human society had yet to be seen. Indeed, before the war with the Sirgogg Horde, Humans were considered as isolationist, assertive but not aggressive species. It was also this legacy of disciplined, warlike states on Earth, why the Empire could focus on development and technological progress better than any other spiritualist powers. Planetary Cathedrals were themselves same impressive as much as practical structures, combined with massive underground shelters, own shield generators and used more as cultural centers than purely religious temples. Scions of Earth clearly never lost their beliefs, while prepared for anything unholy which may appear in front of them. The small portion of the Galaxy discovered by now, already showed enough that God favours only those prepared to face any evil.

FjtA6xU.png

As a further step towards most efficient stellar meritocracy the Kaiser founded, all parts of Humanity had to find their best to let them serve in best of their abilities. School tests were designed to scour every settlement to find every open mind able to learn, while less promising children ended up in military camps or simple civilian jobs. Competitions were strongly encouraged in every possible area of sport or education. There had to be no time or any other resources spent for failures within the population. The Galactic Empire had to remain a place where the best and brightest people rule and others serve, not because they must, but because they know it's the best option.

YFHmQyc.png

By that time, the brightest minds of imperial science achieved many accomplishments within the Human space. Professor Heinrich Grasser received the first Kaiser Wilhelm Society Award since the colony ship left Earth. His daring experiment, based mostly on astonishing prediction of unknown variables, almost instantly terraformed Barren world into perfectly habitable candidate for colony. Too warm for Human comfort, but habitable nonetheless.

dq1LhSS.jpg

Unique surface of Zeta Arae IIa allowed it's transformation, which, sadly, couldn't be replicated.
Later, Professor Grasser fully admitted, that it could result in failure or even planetary destruction. Just like he managed to stabilize the conditions of planetary surface and it's atmosphere, the percentage of failure was high. But personally, he deemed these risks simply irrelevant, if there is miniscule chance that Empire and it's people will receive new world to live on. In that way, Grasser was model imperial scientist: using risk evaluations and all the resources available, limited only by his personal judgment.

The planet was valuable addition to the list of habitable planets within the Human space especially for the fact, that it was far away from any threats of raiders or pirates, deeply within isolated group of star systems, protected by newly founded 2nd Fleet, with base in important Preussen system, containing three stars and Wormhole.

bxML51b.png

This achievement, no matter how much impressive, must be still considered ordinary compared to some others. Ever since the colonists from Chrysanthemum left the Solar system through spatial rift considered to be a 'wormhole', half of Human scientists became obsessed with similar phenomenons. Anomalies tinkering with space, time and matter were found quite often. Not just in the middle of nowhere, deep in the space but sometimes right on the planetary surfaces, like in the case of Hannover colony.

Without Human interference, the portal would have collapsed sooner or later, with the geological signs on the planet, that such portals opened in the past.

When the commander of Research Division 5, Generaloberst Prof. Manfred von Walderode contacted Kaiser Friedrich, nothing seemed amiss: of course the supreme commander of imperial military wanted regular reports about research projects. This case, however, was extraordinarily different. Von Walderode informed Kaiser first about succesful contact with 'portal aliens'. That it's clearly a stable gateway to another dimension, as long as it's monitored and stabilized through electromagnetic wave generators. That multiple experiments proved it's two-way nature and so travel should be theoretically possible too. After he was questioned by his sovereign what's wrong with it, then, the scientist nervously answered, that His Imperial Majesty should see it for himself.

Nothing could have prepared the Kaiser to meet his mirror counterpart: while they both agreed, that contact between their universes should be strictly limited and not a public knowledge, and each Kaiser should focus on his own universe, they both couldn't help it and exchanged quite a few dialogues afterwards. Mirror-kaiser explained, that horrendous war with the creature of the Warp forced him to make a much more difficult calls already and rules more as an absolute monarch judged only by God. Majority of alien realms bowed to the Human rule only because he did let Warp to consume few of them, before rest surrendered their fleets, peoples and all raw materials to his hands.

It was this Kaiser's personal experience, which explains why further experiments with such powers beyond Human comprehension were limited in different, but perhaps related cases. Who knows what may happen, if the Empire will blindly pursue every knowledge without care for consequences. Like Dr. Hermann Schneider's own haunting experience with something hidden within absolute darkness of Black hole.

The Black holes themselves were considered a worthwhile targets of many scientific endeavours, due to confirmed existence of Dark Matter or gravitonic particles or to study the process of decay of the stars. Later, multiple facilities were constructed with single purpose to study their immense depths of knowledge and dangers. And now, something entirely else was presumably found within, emitting simple, yet terrifying messages.

After being informed about the findings, Kaiser Friedrich just asked the chief scientist of the expedition, what his guts tell him about this. After a minute of silence, Dr. Schneider had to answer, that he's worried about anything which may be the source of messages. Clearly not anything good in nature and not good in any sense of the word. He didn't mention a nightmares he and his crew experienced during last days, but his distress and immensely tired eyes were noticed by the Kaiser's own inquisitive eyes of old hunter.

Compared to these dimensional incursions and uneasy decisions bordering supernatural, exhausting work of exobiologists at the time could be easily overlooked. And yet, to promote achievements of imperial science and galactic conquest, there was no better way than show samples of alien life captured, tamed and exhibited for everyone in Berlin and elsewhere. Museums and Zoos not only furthered pursuits of exobiology, but provided ideological and religious support for imperial dogmas.

The zulcor swarms left it's home planet full of interesting rock-like structures, a products of their anorganic diet and breeding grounds.

Comfortable on every frozen or snowy surface, domesticated furry Uddlorans quickly found their way to Human homes. After a century, escaped Uddlorans gone wild became a usual sight in Berliner mountains as well.

The hunt for Tassargoid, an apex predator from jungles of 21 Eta Cygni I proved as the deadliest one. Without a single professional hunter in it's crew at the time, it had to be done by scientists protected by naval officers of Reichsflotte, who clearly did their best, under circumstances.

Despite all the difficulties and tragedies, a first truly intergalactic Museum of Exobiology was a huge success, soon visited not only by citizens of the Empire, but also by alien diplomats, merchants and various envoys, who had nothing like that at home, which in return showed the Humans how much they mastered space so far.

I do love the way Paradox now works comets into all its games. Makes an old EU2 player smile :D

comets everywhere and no drop in stability...

I am a bit curious as to what was the date when the six ark ships left the Sol system was, as well as the date when the settlers of the Chrysanthemum touched down on Berlin?

What happened in the meantime, will be revealed with rediscovery of Human homeworld's fate ;)
