I was on a crusade fighting in the holy lands and things were going well, we were up to about +40% war score and we had barely had to fight a battle, then to my horror the war score flipped to -100%, I quickly paused the game to find out what had gone wrong

I looked over to Italy to find the republic of Amalfi owned Rome and the Arabians had just walked their army into Hungary and taken a single church holding which was the Popes only Holding

I believe you cannot fabricate a claim on Rome (while the Pope has it) so I opened up the history to find out what happened and it turned out that "Bersi the conqueror" had conquered Rome as an adventurer 90 years ago, so I can only guess there is no mechanic to get Rome back into the hands of the Pope

I feel like either paradox should make it so Adventurers cannot target Rome or so the Pope can get Rome back though an event or war

"Adventurers", or rather Germanic tribes took the tour to sack Rome during the migration period, when the papacy did not hold any formal authority. I think it should be possible for adventurers to conquer Rome, but maybe the Pope shouldn't be able to call out crusades if the papacy doesn't have a c_tier holdling, if he is sovereign.

The Pope has learned to ask for help in Holy Fury (the next expansion), as well as having a larger personal guard, so things like this won't happen as often then.
that sounds good, but if Rome is taken will there be a way to get it back into the hands of the pope for example if a catholic non-adventurer ruler retakes Rome like Amalfi did

if this was the case after the pope lost Rome there would never be another crusade since there is no way for the Pope to reclaim Rome from what I can tell

It's a religious decision called "Restore Pope in Rome" for Catholics:

Effect
  • +1000 Piety
  • The Pope gains the county of Rome.

Requirements
  • Must be Catholic or Fraticelli
  • Must control Rome county

Historically the Pope relocated to Avignon in the 14th century, and the Popes there proclaimed several crusades from there. So I think it should be possible to give the Pope land if he loses Rome, and that the Pope can call for minor Crusades.

You're talking about a pre-CK2 timeline here, right? I don't think it's very relevant. Also, sacking Rome isn't really the same thing as reigning over Rome.

I'm not against adventurers conquering Rome, but the Pope isn't a random one-province kingdom. He should obviously be helped by catholic rulers when a germanic nobody tries to conquer his lands. I think your idea of relocating the Pope is good, since Italy gets conquered by muslims on a regular basis, and it would make sense for Catholic rulers to give some land to the Pope in that case - or for the Pope to ask for some Church land.
