Hi, I played Battletech boardgame in early 90s.

One of the things we discussed was ammo explosion...

Cant remember the mech but it had MG in center torso with 100 ammo.

Basically a mech with a potential ammo explosion of 200 damage is a bad idea.

If the nda has been lifted, how are ammo explosions handled in the computer game?

Side note: cant wait to get the game, huge fan! :D

Basically, ammo explosions CAN (and do) happen. However, if you've used more than 50% of the ammo in a crit slot, it won't "explode" and cause damage. If more than 50% of the ammo in a crit slot is still there when it gets hit... BOOM!

As there are no Through-Armor crits though, you don't have to worry about those 200 dmg MG ammo crits, unless you don't shoot your MGs at all.

I am sure I will some of this wrong, but they made significant changes.
1. ammo will not explode if there is less than 1/2 remaining in that crit location (otherwise the ammo is 'jammed')
2. ammo explosions are confined to the affected hit location area (so only CT and Head ammo explosions will directly kill you)
3. I think damage may have been redcued, but not positive.

At one time I floated the idea of all ammo having a capacity of 480 damage/ton (using HBS damage values), to calculate shots per ton. It goes a long way towards standardizing the explosive capacity of an ammo bin and you don't get these fringe cases of 1 ton of MG ammo being more explosive than a tactical nuke. (Example SRM6 = 480/48d = 10 shots/ton; LRM = 480/80d = 6 shots/ton; AC10 = 480/60 = 8 shots/ton; MGs = 480/15d = 32 shots/ton). It also means every single type of ammo does the same damage when exploding.

You have an extra 'not' there. Ammo WILL explode unless there is less than 1/2 remaining. i.e. If 51% of your ammo is still in that location, it will explode. If 49% is in the location, it will NOT explode.

I see... how much customization is possible ... could I say reduce the ammo for each weapon? for example 20 ammo seem about right for MG maybe.

Edit: checked the tech readout i still got the book , the whm-6r had actually 200 MG ammo in center torso... still one of my favourite mechs :)

Nope. Nor can you bring ammo in 1/2 ton increments (something that is available in TT and MWO).

ammo placement is serious business in BATTLETECH. If you place in Head or CT, it will kill you if it explodes. If you place in the RT or LT, it will destroy the torso (and corresponding arm) and Side Torso destruction causes a Pilot damage (NOTE: I am not sure if ammo explosion causes a Pilot hit as well, it does in TT). If you place ammo in the Legs (popular in MWO), it will destroy your leg, you will fall down, and take a Pilot hit. This means the safest place to carry ammo is probably your Arms (or possibly Head, but only because there is so little internal structure, you are far more likely to lose the head, than take critical damage and possible ammo explosion).

I see, in the example Id propably move the MG to the arm then, thanks all for info! Nice community! :)

Too bad some mechs wont be included I just read , another company apparently has the license until 2021... but it doesnt really matter with so many other cool mechs :)

I thought ammo explosions in TT would damage the pilot due to some kind of feed back through the neuro-helmet. I I haven't noticed any pilot damage from this while watching streamers, but then again, I wasn't looking for it.

Side torso destruction will incur pilot damage, don't recall seeing a readout that had two pilot damage points due to exploding ammo and exploded torso at the same time. Might have been removed so that the damage isn't excessive because that's two points for side torso loss already.

Funny, I could have sworn I saw it was a point of damage for the ammo going off and another for a side torso loss - I may have been wrong, but anything other than that doesn't really scan with the other examples (for me anyway).

I am wrong, just saw in one of Odd's streams some mg ammo going up in a side torso - only the one hit.

Though it seems that if ammo blows off side torso - only one injury is registered.
I believe that I heard in one of the dev streams (or maybe in a post in the forums) that only 1 pilot hit can occur from one unit attacking another unit. A second hit can occur from falling down from that attack.

Regardless, that seems to be how it works, as I have seen a stream with an ammo explosion, LT destruction, RT destruction in one attack. It only indicated one hit on the enemy pilot.

So basically we have CASE as a standard feature

This is basically right, but you can rack up 3 pilot hits on a single action with melee + support + knockdown. Each step is limited to one pilot injury, but if you pop a torso with the punch, knockdown with instability, and then the SL pops the other torso the game counts those as separate salvos. I can't remember which stream it happened on, but it's about the only exception we've seen.

Interesting. It also makes sense given the sequence of events in the game.
