Obviously the USA's states don't fit 1 to 1 on a game-mechanic-concept, so some lesser states have been merged.

I dont think there is much to argue with that.

If you would add each individual 51 states it would simply not work with the current game mechanics in the game. I dont see much of an gameplay reason for them adding all the states with historical borders. They dont have historical state borders in europe, so i dont see why the USA should be different.

Austria for example consists of 9 states, while ingame they are merged together into 3 states.

There is actually an gameplay reason for slovakia being 4 states, in that it can get split between germany, hungary and poland. Germany would get western slovakia, poland eastern slovakia and hungary the other 2 states (as they historically did). That was actually an real proposal, in which germany offered parts of slovakia in exchange for danzig, which is reflected ingame by the national focus 'Danzig for Slovakia'.

I still wonder why we care about this.. after all, I am pretty sure all of us will invade the US as Germany and make our own states. Aye, that is it.. the United German States of America.. I do like where this is going.

States need to serve 2 functions - a holding box for industry and manpower, and a geographic area that could be part of a peace agreement. You mention Slovakia as having 3 states, but it and Czechoslovakia were divided amongst different nations and could have been divided in different fashions. I think I'd have Czechoslovakia in 6 states - Sudetenland, Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, Ruthenia and the area along the Hungarian border including Kosice (which was annexed to Hungary). With a population of 15.3m that's 2.55m per state on average.

Now the US with 131m in 50 states (including Hawaii & Alaska as they will have to be separate states in game) would be 2.6m per state on average, so US States are very comparable in terms of population with the European example of Slovakia that you mentioned. In regards to the second part, land that can be carved up in peace deals, did Mexico or Canada have any historical claims on parts of States? I would have thought that Mexico may be interested in getting all of Texas back, or all of California etc, but I'd be surprised if they would want part of a state. I think that having the US actual states as HOI4 states is a fair representation, with some amalgamation in the NE being acceptable (but all of New England in a single state does seem a bit much).

That is an example for the German Reich:
Deutsches_Reich_2.png

That is not represented any way in the game either. Especially the "Ruhrgebiet" will never be good implemented. And as german I am completly ok with that. Germany had 1/2-1/3 of the US population, and I am sure not 2x so much states.
Numbers after the losses in europe after WW2? ~400 millions in europe and 160,1 millions in US.

I think at the end of the day nearly no one gives a fuck. Its not meant to reflect the reality complete realisitic. Gameplay wise good, logical with much flavour. I think that Paradox achieved this.

I am very happy with the current implementation of the states I saw so far.

You think that is bad wait till you see how the carve up Australia? Some places would have a population in the thousands, but because you can't just have the states and territories or it would be too easy to take over.
