Is this a bug or is it possible to discover and colonize the americas before 1492? I'm playing a game as Byzantium(trying to reclaim the roman empire at its peak with some extras) and i annexed portugal in 1443. And what do i find? They have 1 colony in south America already! Is this a bug or what?

While you're correcting things, remember to let the Ottomans annex you in ten years.;)

Portugal gets explorers earlier than any other nation except China. And since the AI has no naval attrition, they head straight for Brazil and Indonesia.

That's what I'd do if my ships didn't suffer from attrition ;)

But IMO this is a minor problem, not worth getting frustrated about.

...and then straight on to Tahiti, Australia and all the spice islands before the explorer dies of old age .... ;)

All it would really take is shorter lifetimes for those explorers. Say what you like about the EEP, but it has shown that this problem is easy to fix.

Anyway, why shouldn't Portugal have colonies in the Americas by 1440 or so? Crossing the Atlantic was technically feasible for them. It's just that they were busy trying to round Africa instead of travelling west. There's nothing magic about 1492 except that somebody who didn't know his geography finally got funding to go the wrong way to India.

I'm not sure that shorter explorer lifetimes would do the job even if we really wanted to stop this. There just aren't very many seazones between Brazil and Cape Verde.

I haven't seen this happen with the EEP (and shorter lifetimes). I saw it pretty much every game with earlier EEP versions and I still see it pretty much every game with the normal GC.

Isaac, I'll take your word for it that the EEP helps. I'm usually not in any position to know what's going on in Brazil until 1580 or so.

Grayfox, you should probably release Portugal. They're much more valuable to you as a source of new colonies than for their three iberian provinces.

OTOH if you don't annex them when you have a chance they'll keep building up colonial cities and you won't be ablle to later.

But if he releases them he should be able to diplo annex when he wants to.
