Am I the only person who wants more cultural province names?

+1 - More Scottish/English/Irish names in the Louisiana and central Canada regions would be cool, I eventually ran out of names naming them myself.

And for debate, what using leader/explorer/conquistador/admiral/heirs/kings/doges/etc for inspiration? Like Rupert's Land for example, otherwise, +1 for native speaker's input. :happy:

I've done that before actually! I like using king's names in provinces and sometimes explorers because then you remember "Oh yeah, I had this guy who found it once, he was pretty good!"
I did that for Louisiana as the Dutch, my ruler was named Gaspar so I named it "Gasparsland".
That would be interesting if for places like that, it would take the name of a ruler or whatever. That would probably take quite a bit of work though.

You should make a nice big spreadsheet and the community could help you filling the province names everywhere possible for every language.

That would be best I feel. I would be glad to help put the proper castellano names on the map. Also somebody earlier made a comment on the andaluz culture names and I could not agree more. If I get on the train and travel to Sevilla or Córdoba I will hear castellano and not mozárabe. :happy:

I think the ideal case would be always using province owner's primary culture, unless the province culture is accepted, in which case you'd use it instead.

Austria gets it best it seems, since all province names are changed to austrian names no matter the culture in province. I'd really love if all countries had that luxury

Yeah, in my Austria game lots of provinces changed, it was nice.
No idea why it does that for some countries and not others, or maybe it's province-dependent.

Hence all the Andalucian provinces having Arabic names instead of Castilian ones.

It would be a wonderful, fantastic flavor feature if it decided names from owner culture instead of province culture. As it works now, I have it disabled due to silly outcomes.

I suppose the solution untill/if it's changed is to mod names for each individual country, since that appears to work.

Yup, that also looks a bit weird for me. At least, the provinces that are more likelly to be targeted by difrent cultures should have alternative cultural names and show the name of owner if the province is a accepted culture and same religion group.

But it is no big deal in the end.

To be fair, most of the land that Portugal colonised historicly is already named in portuguese is in-game by default. Just saying...

Did DDRJake just win this post? I'm a bit concerned you might be giving ETA some expansionist ideas though. On topic, there is clearly something wrong with the triggers. I mean, castille does not change names automatically, but castilian culture does. Austria, however, changes names regardless of culture, I remember seeing "Andalusien" when I was painting spain Habsburg white (although the habsburg part felt fitting )

Is it that way too in Africa, or areas which were colonized but abandoned?
Even then, as we said, it would be nice to have some ahistorical names in the New World or elsewhere, perhaps even in Spain. (Not sure how different Portuguese place names are for Spanish cities though)

There's nothing wrong with it, that's just the way it's set up. It looks for a file for a specific tag first and uses that if it exists. There is a file specifically for Austria in this case, so if Austria takes a province it'll rename that province to whatever it says in the province name file for the Austria tag. If there isn't a province name file for a tag, it uses the province name file for a culture, but it uses those on a per province basis. So in the case of say Castile, which doesn't have a file for their tag, it'll use Castillian names in Castillian provinces, Andalusian names in Andalusian provinces, etc.

I wonder why it's done that way? If that's how it worked in real life, Andalusian provinces would still have Arabic names today.
Also, Antwerp is no longer called Antorf at the beginning of the game, it's now Antwerpen.

I feel like this kind of thing in the New World would be easier than it seems. Most names derive from a ruler or a landmark, so translating the landmark names literally or perhaps in a more artistic manner would be pretty easy while the ones named after rulers, well, that could be a bit more work, but I'm sure something could be done.

Dynamic names would be great.
At first when I read the change, I thought that owning British Isles by Norway will give cool names to the provinces, but it didn't happen For now looks more like a dummy mechanism which will be filled later. Hopefully.

In fact, I think, if it could be modded without breaking Ironman (like, super huge csv file(s)), then the community could do it.
