Every other post is about the HRE. Anyone who asks a question is either asking about the HRE, or if not, will get HRE in their answer. Why? The HRE is not the only way to play the game. I played one austria game in like 1.1... and I've never tried to become emperor by vassalizing electors and getting free vassals.
My question is, am I doing it wrong? Is that how you're supposed to play? Not try and make a historical empire, and then achieve the ambitions of that country, like building a Pacific Empire with Japan, kicking the Ottomans out of Europe with Austria, or take Vienna as the Ottomans, but instead wedge yourself into the HRE and magically annex all of its land, or even worse, abuse the mechanics to make a pan-eurasian HRE that you magically control without any risks? If I am missing something, please let me know.
I wouldn't object to playing a game where germany or italy forms and takes emperor, nothing spectacular there. or even if poland, Britain, or Spain take the throne and defend the empire. But using the mechanics to annex the earth, is that really the only viable strategy?
Someone asks for a poland strategy: "vassalize electors become emperor add land to empire pass all but last reform add land to empire release vassals"
same for France, spain, italy... seems to be too common of a thing. doesn't that get a bit boring eventually?
am I the only one who would prefer dismantling that hideous turd instead of ruling it? smash the HRE into oblivion I say.

As a Christian monarchy, dismantling the Empire is actually a more involved process than getting elected Emperor is. I was going to dismantle the Empire in the France game I currently have on hold, but between the Reformation and the expansion of Bohemia and Brandenburg, my vassalization of three of the westernmost electors (and my habit of always boosting relations with vassals, since normally I'm planning to diploannex them) resulted in me getting elected (because it left Austria with only two supporters).

At which point I just said "welp, let's run with this".

No, you're not alone. I think Orthodox Ottoman Emperor is awfull as well as OPM rushing for italian OPM just to enter the Empire and getting rid of its homeland.

I only like to make a play for the HRE in games where it makes historical (or at least role playing) sense. am currently playing through a game as the Teutonic Order and having a lot of fun trying to conquer my way to forming Germany so that I can be eligible for Imperial elections (not possible as a Theocracy). It is a real slug fest game and is a lot of fun!

I plan to eventually go for the Sultan of Rum achievement, but not by shedding Muslim provinces and becoming an Orthodox HRE Emperor. That strategy is a bit gamy IMHO. I just can't wrap my head around an Orthodox Sultan who is interested in HRE Imperial politics. Taking the HRE down by force? Sure. Converting to Orthodox faith to join the infidels? Not so much.

I've only been involved in the hre politics once, to get the overthrow Austria achievement, which is odd seeing how ive been playing the series for a few years off and on. Come to think of it, I've never even played as Austria. :p

The hre is more a thorn in my side actually, since as Venice the emperor always intervenes in my wars.

I'm starting to get more into its politics though since I get the system now. I don't really play germanic states too often.

Well over ten games or so and I had the same feeling, that it is an annoying conglomerate that just stands there to prevent me from conquering the heartland of Europe. They and a regency council prevented me from throwing the triumph for Italy...Grrrr.

Anyways I am trying to learn how those mechanics work right now in attempt to take control of this mess by making myself emperor and instead of conquering unify it. In my current play-through I am having Savoi as a vassal and I have claimed the throne of Bohemia placing my dynasty on their throne. Heres to hopping Ill PU them.

The whole notion is annoying and taxing though, I cant fathom myself playing as an HRE minor.

I only wish I had an option to disable the hre from the beginning.
A mod that does that is not difficult to write. Somewhat tedious, but not difficult.

Of course, it makes Germany turn into a cluster of blobs even faster than is already the case.

You don´t need to care about becoming HRE in every bloddy game, what this thread is about?

I did become HRE as Commonwealth once and it was great but it happened almost by accident.

Well, in my last 3 games (as Golden Horde, Sioux, and Baluchistan/Mughals) I didn't get involved in the HRE once, so... you're not the only one, no.

But if for whatever crazy reason I decided to play Austria (I have no idea why anyone would do that, it's way too easy), then I would be involving myself in the HRE, so there's that...

Benefits for dismantling HRE are way too modest to be of any appeal. Disbanding this abomination should grant you some permanent modifier, may be not that substantial as Imperial Integrity (which is OP imo), but at least something meaningful. Atm HRE is just too good to be ignored, no matter which nation you play.

Last time I looked, the whole Empire put together doesn't have 300k troops in 1444, or even 1544 (though they're getting close by that point).

(And anyway, Austria starts the game with twelve provinces; one of them has a gold mine, most of them have base tax 6 or higher, and Vienna is up there with London, Prague, Kiev, Paris, and post-renewal Constantinople.)

Basically if you have aspirations to central Europe or Italy there is no way to ignore them.

Naturally from the mines of Moria, I mean Tirol, silly :glare:

Still I don't think those mines are enough to support so vast numbers for so little countries.

Yup. This is a good thing. Nobody with aspirations to central Europe or Italy could afford to ignore the Emperor.

Well relative strength, numbers and alliances play a big part, but in my example (when I tried to conquer Italy), I was pretty much unhampered by Bohemia, since we were best buds (despite the fact that I was removing provinces left and right, I was repairing the alliance afterwards) and I went unopposed up the peninsula. I even helped them in a couple wars that they wanted to remove electorates, so I grabbed some more provinces :p. I grinded to a stand still though when he passed the penultimate reform that vassalised them all. I could take them on and nab Millan in a do or die in the last 15 years of the game but I had a regency council >.<
