Ok - It's probably because I am total n00b when confronted with text, but how exactly does the DD editor work? It's supposedly 'easy' to use but I am quite baffled. I presume there are threads about it so please link me, because I have not seen any!

(it is 3 in the morning though)

I think the editor is great, I don't think it is broken, it is a bit buggy however. I tried doing a simple mod, changing Kolding to a German National province but keeping it in Denmarks ownership. When I went to fire up the game, I got an error and a crash. I went back in, changed Kolding back to Denmark, and everything was fine. That shouldn't happen. Also it seems you cannot create a new naval unit in the OOB section, and some of the fields in certain areas are just locked even though they look like they should be accessible.

But....the editor is pretty cool, I have been able to mod all sorts of things quickly and efficiently including techs and have had no problems. Like I said the thing is just a bit buggy, but if you just save/backup your work or remember what you changed before you get errors you should be ok.

When editing global data (IC) caused my game to crash. Chainging it back didn't help so I had to reinstall. There definitely seem to be a few bugs in it but I think it got potential. With it I'm sure we will see even more mini mods.

However, I think we should see the editor as a mere bonus, nothing more.

It works just fine over here. Does the retail game come with an edited version of the editor? Hmmm... PM Florian about it.

perhaps its possible that there's a certain process to doing certain things that we don't know but you've all but forgotten about? something that would seem entirely unimportant?

about the only things that made my editor/game crash after editing were:

1. write-protected files in the HoI2 folder. just right-click on the entire folder and select-deselect write protection once.
2. doing stuff without doing corresponding stuff. like giving provinces to nation A when nation B still has it as well. Rule of Thumb: ALWAYS let the checks that are in the editor run over your changes! when there are errors reported by those, chances are good the game WILL crash.
3. Doing silly stuff. Putting a division on a seazone and the likes.

That said, the rule of thumb is really the most important one...when there are no errors reported, you can be almost sure your game will run.

and THAT said, with the amout of data in HoI2:DD, it is virtually impossible to discount all possibilities that can potentially make the game crash...but if you follow the above 3 easy things, you should reduce those risks to a minimum:)

so, enjoy the editor!

Yeah I think many (me included) forget about the check ability. I'll give it another go and see if I can reproduce the error.

Thanks for the tips!

Well, for me it seems you can't make battle scenarios without the WHOLE world being in it. I tried that check thing, and all provinces except those i wanted (Sweden and Norway) was:

Id = 234, Province is not controlled by any nation.
Id = 234, Province is not owned by any nation.
Id = 235, Province is not controlled by any nation.
Id = 235, Province is not owned by any nation.

ETC... with every province except those i have assigned... what must i do to make the editor know that I ONLY want Sweden and Norway?

I love the editor and have been using it fine so far, but I have noticed two small but annoying bugs.

While editing units the editor has a box labeled Ground Defence that show the units existing land Ground Defence score, so far so good. The problem is when I change that number it saves it to the unit file as SurfaceDefence which is the naval value. This causes error message on loading the game but none from the editor's checker. It was easy enough to just remove the offending lines and edit Ground Defence by hand, but of course I'd rather do it easier with the editor.

The other bug I have seen is in the tech tree under Land Doctrines. It does not display, or have an option for the trickleback modifier of the new hospital techs. Therefore if you do anything with these techs it will save them minus their trickleback modifier.

Fortunatelly I have been modding HOI2 for awhile now and was easily able to find and fix these problems manually. I do think that the old rule still applies though. Back up your game folder before you start tinkering and take carefull notes on your changes so you can undo them later.

well if those are the only errors you get, you´re fine. Those don´t crash the game.

Hm...

I tried making a new scenario from scratch, only the Irish island this time. When i do the check I still only see the:

id = 123 Province not controlled bla bla bla...

eveything else seemed normal. (No strange OOB, no nothing)

So i thought: "I'll give it a try again!" started DD, clicked singe player and CTD. WHAT is wrong??? if I could I would gladly share the scenario to someone more clever then me...
