Am I doing something wrong?

So I recently decided to check out the Marius update after not touching the game for a very long time (pretty much since launch). I checked out a few let's plays on Youtube to get a grip on what to do and so on, and I'm not totally lost since I play a few other PDX games....

Or so I thought. Playing as Rome I first notice a few differences between my mission tree (Roman Italia the Punic Wars one) and the youtube let's play (on the same patch). The first mission to get claims on the etruscans and samnites have different pre-requisites. He could just click the mission, I needed to ally the Sabines and the other hill tribe just south of them (dont remember the name).

Fine, I thought, just a small thing... But I also notice how he could choose 8 inventions from the start due to him having tech advancement 2. Well so did I, but I couldn't pick any invetions at all.

Never mind, I'll go to war against the samnites I think... No? In the middle of the war i have a change in consulship in Rome, all my great families die out and are replaced by a random family with 1 guy in it demanding 9 positions. And also, all my reaschers and government officals also died.

Am I totally lost on whats happening or is there something wrong here?

have you double (and triple) checked to not have ANY mod installed?
maybe checking the files could help too.

for technology you have to click the blue "military technology" name above the head of the researcher. that will open the military tech tree. of course you can do the same with each category.

as for missions, check to have installed the free dlc "punic wars"
it's free but it's not in the base game, you need to "purchase" it and download it like other dlcs

I never tried any mods so I doubt that is messing me up.

I got into the invention "screen" but I lacked any "currency" to buy the inventions.

And I am pretty sure I have the dlc installed (it is the exact same mission tree as the other guy has, and that I can find on the wiki. But I have different conditions to trigger it).

I also have a really wonky UI where new windows pop up behind each other. And all these things are the same even if I start new games.

Delete entire Imperator folder in your windows/user folder. Restart the game. For me the patch wasn't working right until.
